This snapshot tour takes you on a scenic drive with a number of stops, including a stop at the island's old capital, Teguise. After leaving your ship, travel inland to Teguise, which was founded in the 15th century by the Conquistadors. On days when there is no market, you will be able to admire the beautifully restored houses and picturesque square.

Continue to Caleta Famara Beach, which Lanzarote artist César Manrique frequented as a child, and stop for photographs before passing through the typical Canarian villages of Soo, La Santa, Tinajo, Tiagua and Mozaga. Stop at the Peasants' Monument (Monumento al Campesino), which is 50-feet high and was created by Manrique in 1968 as a tribute to the work of the island’s peasant farmers.

You then pass through Puerto del Carmen, the island’s biggest resort, on the way back.

Join us on a scenic drive into the mountains of Anaga and enjoy some time at leisure in the town of La Laguna. Your tour starts with a drive into the mountains, passing the fishing village of San Andres.

During your drive you may be able to spot one of Tenerife’s symbols, the ‘Dragon Tree’, and admire the terraces of cultivated land. There will be a short stop at the panoramic viewpoint of Pico del Ingles, where you can capture the view of the north and south side of the island. There will also be a stop at either Jardina viewpoint or Cruz del Carmen viewpoint, from where you can see La Laguna.

The last stop on your tour will be in La Laguna, where you can spend time at leisure and see the Christ Church. You will have approximately 30 minutes here before your return drive to the ship.

The Christ Church in La Laguna is not always open due to festivities and services. Toilet facilities will be available in La Laguna. The tour may operate in a different order to described, so your visit to La Laguna may be at the beginning or end of the tour.

Take in the highlights of La Palma on a scenic drive around the island, beginning in the capital, Santa Cruz de la Palma. From here, continue to the Mirador de la Concepcion, stopping for photos at this viewpoint before continuing to the Caldera de Taburiente, one of the largest extinct volcanic craters in the world. It is more than five miles in diameter and, in places, over 5,000 feet deep.

After pausing for photographs, your coach takes you through the western part of La Palma to Los Llanos de Aridane, the largest town on the island which has a population of over 20,000. Enjoy vistas of Los Llanos, surrounded by cacti and banana plantations, before returning to your ship via the town of El Paso.

This is a coach-based excursion with the majority of the sightseeing taking place from your vehicle. This tour involves travelling on winding roads. Any walking at short photo stops will be at your discretion.

This included excursion takes you on a leisurely sightseeing drive, with two photo stops and the opportunity to try the traditional drink Poncha. The excursion begins as you leave the port, passing Santa Catarina Park, and travels west towards the Santa Rita area, before arriving at your first viewpoint overlooking Funchal.

Then continue southwest, passing Câmara de Lobos, a picturesque fishing village once painted by Sir Winston Churchill. Enjoy a short stop at Pico da Torre viewpoint where you can see the village and its bay from above. Reboard your coach and head to a local establishment, close to the port, where you can try the traditional Poncha made with sugarcane Rum.

After your taste of Poncha, return to the ship by coach or make your own way back independently.

This is primarily a coach-based excursion with some photo stops where walking is at your discretion. There is up to 150 yards of essential walking required. Some of the stops will have uneven and cobbled ground and optional steps. Visibility from all viewpoints is dependent on the weather and therefore cannot be guaranteed.

Discover the natural attractions surrounding El Ferrol today, driving along the coast with its typical Galician villages and enjoying views of the nearby beaches, forests and estuaries.

Begin with a panoramic tour of El Ferrol, passing the old military camp and the neo-Classical quarter which housed naval officers in the 18th century.

You then travel along the coast to Pontedeume, which presents you with views of the forest and estuaries: a short stop will be made here to give you an opportunity to take photos of the scenery. Arrive at the mouth of the estuary for refreshments in a local restaurant before the journey back to El Ferrol.

This tour requires up to 200 yards of essential walking. There are up to ten steps at the restaurant. Any further walking at the short photo stops is at your discretion.

Walk part of the Camino de Santiago, just like a pilgrim, and visit Santiago de Compostela on this full day tour.

Leaving the port, travel by coach to your starting point along the Way of St James, before you begin your stroll alongside meadows, farms and eucalyptus groves towards Santiago. This walk will be long enough to give you a good impression of what it is like to walk the Camino de Santiago across Northern Spain.

Arriving in Santiago - the end of the Way and the goal of any pilgrim - your guide will give a brief explanation about the cathedral and other places associated with the pilgrimage.

After your walk, enjoy a light tapas lunch. Then there is time to discover this historic city at your leisure before returning to the port.

This excursion involves a walk of approximately four miles, partly along cobbled streets and partly along a long-distance footpath: the surface of this may be uneven, dusty or muddy depending on the season and the weather. Comfortable, supportive walking shoes are essential, and you should be prepared for changeable weather. Entrance to the cathedral is not included in the cost of this excursion. A packed lunch can be supplied by the ship on request: a light tapas lunch is served at the Parador in Santiago de Compostela. The drive to and from your starting point is approximately one-and-a-half hours. If you have notified Saga of any dietary requirements these will be automatically passed over to lunch venues, the Explore Ashore Team will contact you if there are any concerns.

Your stop in El Ferrol gives you the opportunity to visit the pilgrimage city of Santiago de Compostela with its old quarter and cathedral that dominates Obradoiro Square.

The cathedral has become the most popular site of Christian pilgrimage after Jerusalem and Rome; on your visit, you will see the Jubilee Door (only opened each Jubilee Year) and the traditional tomb of St James. At Obradoiro Square, you will be told more about the Cathedral and plaza and then enjoy some time at leisure.

Afterwards, enjoy a light tapas lunch at the Parador de los Reyes Catolicós. This elegant hotel has a variety of Renaissance, Gothic and Baroque features and was built as a hostel for pilgrims in the 15th century.

This excursion involves walking approximately two miles, much of it over cobbled streets with around 15 steps. Coaches are unable to access the cathedral area – there is a walk of approximately 800 yards to reach it. The journey to Santiago de Compostela should take around one hour and 15 minutes each way, depending on traffic. Large bags and backpacks should not be taken inside the cathedral and access to the interior may occasionally be restricted if a service is taking place. To visit inside the Cathedral, guests must have their knees covered. Entrance to the Cathedral is included in the cost of the tour.

Explore Santiago at your own pace on this excursion. Depart your ship by coach to visit the pilgrimage city of Santiago de Compostela, with its old quarter and cathedral dominating Obradoiro Square.

Entrance to the cathedral is not included in the cost of this excursion, and you should be aware that if you intend to visit, you are not permitted to bring bags or backpacks inside. If visiting the destination on a public holiday, shops and restaurants may be closed.

Enjoy a drive through Galicia to the fishing port and provincial capital of La Coruña. Formerly occupied by the Phoenicians, Romans and Moors, this historic city has retained many traces of its past, and is well known in Spain for the distinctive glazed balconies or ‘miradores’ that adorn many of its buildings.

Your guide will show you these on a panoramic tour, which includes a photo-stop at the Torre de Hercules. Although rebuilt many times over the centuries, this dates from Roman times and is believed to be the World’s oldest working lighthouse. Your tour finishes with a stop in the Plaza de Maria Pita, named after a woman who helped defend the city against an attack by Sir Francis Drake in 1589.

You have free time here and may wish to view the City Hall, with its three domes dominating the square, or the nearby churches of San Jorge and San Nicolás, before returning by coach to your ship.

Enjoy a walking tour of El Ferrol, which includes a visit to Exponav, the shipbuilding museum.

Leaving directly from the port with your guide, wander into El Ferrol. During the 16th century, when the harbour of El Ferrol was visited by ships of the Royal Navy, El Ferrol became a leading maritime centre and main support base for warships and naval facilities in the north of Spain.

After your walking tour you will arrive at the Exponav, the shipbuilding museum, which houses an exhibition devoted to naval construction, technology and history. Here you can see how the military architecture coexists with the traditional white glazed galleries that brighten up the streets of the Old Town of El Ferrol.

Discover the highlights of the Spanish Navy through the centuries before returning to the ship on foot, stopping at the Parador of Ferrol for a coffee break on route. The Parador of Ferrol, a former manor house, is located in the heart of the town overlooking the sea.

This tour is entirely on foot and you are expected to walk up to one-and-a-quarter-miles over cobbled and uneven ground. The visit to the museum will be approximately 50 minutes. We recommend that you wear flat walking shoes. This is a small group tour with limited capacity.

This excursion visits the great Mirador del Rio viewpoint and Jameos del Agua underground cavern – which both showcase César Manrique’s architectural talent.

The tour begins with a coach transfer to the north of Lanzarote, to visit the Jameos del Agua Cave. César Manrique turned what was once a water hole in the earth’s surface into an inspiring volcanic cavern and exotic subterranean water garden, Jameos del Agua.

On arrival, you'll descend into the cavern via a winding staircase leading down to the underground, natural lake. This underground lake is slightly illuminated by the sun and is home to the blind albino crab, which are unique to Lanzarote.

After your visit inside the cavern, you walk along the volcanic path to the surface where you can see the crystal blue waters of the swimming pool, a backdrop for many visitor's photos.

Reboard your coach and head to Mirador del Rio viewpoint, located 500 metres above a cliff. This is one of the most unique architectural creations by César Manrique where you can capture panoramic views of Lanzarote and the Chinijo Archipelago.

Before returning to Arrecife, enjoy a visit to an Aloe Vera Farm, tucked away in the village of Orzola.

Additional Information

There is up to 550 yards of essential walking and up to 40 steps during this tour. There will be prolonged periods of standing throughout the excursion. The terrain at the cave is made of volcanic stone and can be uneven, so we recommend that you wear flat walking shoes. We also recommend bringing a light jacket or jumper, as it can get cooler at the viewpoint. Guests must be physically fit to participate on this excursion.

Join us on this small group tour for a trek into the famous Cuervo Volcano, also known as The Ravens Boiler. Begin your tour by travelling through Puerto del Carmen to the outskirts of Timanfaya National Park, where your trek begins. A sweeping view of the crater that was once visited by Alexander Von Humboldt, the great Prussian naturalist and philosopher, awaits you.

Now an extinct wonder, follow the inside perimeter of this volcano and take in more lunar landscapes as you enter and leave, admiring rocky winding paths and surrounding volcanoes in the distance. After the trek, the tour continues to the village of Yaiza where you will enjoy a tea or coffee before returning to the ship.

Additional Information

This tour involves between three and four miles of walking, including some steep inclines and over uneven terrain. Once at the crater, the walking will be mainly on flat terrain. You must be physically fit to participate on this tour. Walking shoes or sturdy trainers are recommended, along with a cardigan or jacket, as the temperatures may be colder at the crater. This tour has limited capacity.

Lanzarote has a fascinating history, one of its most notable events being the eruptions of the 1730s, when the volcanoes in the Timanfaya area erupted for six years and covered nearly a third of the island with lava. This volcanic landscape is revealed in Timanfaya National Park, also known as ‘Fire Mountain’, which will be your first destination after driving through the whitewashed villages of Puerto del Carman, Macher and Yaiza. Once at the national park, begin a tour of the craters and lava beds in this lunar-like terrain. At Islote de Hilario, enjoy a demonstration of the latent power of the volcano, as wood is ignited and steam produced by using the heat just below the surface.

Afterwards travel through the Salt Planes to La Geria, where vineyards dot the landscape. Here, the wines are protected by semi-circular stonewalls, making them look more like art than argriculture. A stop here will be made to visit a bodega, where there will be the opportunity to purchase some Lanzarote wine before returning to the ship, with a short stop at the Aloe Vera Farm on the way.

Additional Information

There is half-a-mile of essential walking, most of which is at the visitor centre over flat surfaces. However, at other stops some surfaces are likely to be exceptionally uneven. We recommend that you wear flat walking shoes.

Bridging the gap between snorkelling and scuba diving, Sea Trek allows you to breathe underwater, without the need for cumbersome dive gear: instead, oxygen is provided from the surface and continuously fed into a high-tech helmet.

You’ll learn the basics from an instructor before the exciting bit – heading into the underwater realm from the beach to walk on the ocean floor in near-weightlessness! During the excursion you might see seabream, damselfish, brightly coloured wrasse, spider crabs and wide-eyed flounders: we’re sure this excursion will leave you just as wide-eyed as they are!

The activity itself lasts 30 minutes, giving you the chance to experience the magic of the marine environment.Furthermore, the dive centre is located within the picturesque Costa Teguise. Additional Information

This tour is not suitable for those suffering from conditions such as asthma, diabetes, heart problems, epilepsy or sinus problems. Water shoes are advised, and participants must be competent swimmers. Please refrain from drinking alcoholic beverages prior to any water activities. You should bring a towel and wear swimwear underneath your clothes as the changing facilities are limited. The duration of this tour is dependent on how many guests participate in the Sea Trek and therefore it may be shorter than advertised.

Travel to the historic town of Arucas, which features the impressive parish church of San Juan and the Plaza de la Constitution.

Enjoy a walk through this charming town and learn about its history before your tour continues to the town of Firgas. This picturesque Canarian village has a long history connected to water, and today an artificial waterfall flows down the steps in the centre of the old town, Paseo de Gran Canaria, providing a lovely place to walk.

From Firgas, you’ll head towards The Finca La Laja and Bodega Los Berrazales, a more than 200-year old farm known for its wine, coffee and oranges. You can learn about their coffee-making and wine-making process, and enjoy a tasting of both products.

Join us on this tour to visit a number of key sites in northern Gran Canaria. The tour starts with a 30-minute journey to discover the volcanic origins of Gran Canaria's Bandama Crater, an extinct volcano which rises nearly 1,900 feet above sea level. Take in the island views here, before travelling to Teror, a local town with whitewashed houses, red-tiled roofs and ornate carved balconies.

Stroll through the cobblestone streets and enter the Church of Our Lady of the Pine, dedicated to the patron saint of Gran Canaria. Continue on to Arucas and make a stop at Los Jardines de la Marquesa (The Duchess Gardens), where there are numerous tropical and sub-tropical flowers, plants and trees from around the world.

Enjoy tea, coffee, sandwiches and cakes here, before heading back to the port, making a photo stop at the city of Altavista along the way.

There is just over half-a-mile of walking on this excursion, some of which is over cobblestones, with a few steps at the church and in the gardens. You will be driven along numerous winding roads with occasional steep drops - vertigo sufferers should take this into consideration. The duration of this tour may be affected by local traffic.

The Bandama Caldera is one of the youngest volcanoes on the Canarian archipelago. Its crater is over 650 feet deep, has a diameter of almost three-quarters of a mile and was last active about 3,000 years ago, when a series of eruptions took place that gave the Santa Brígida district its distinctive topography.

Leaving the pier, your coach will take you up towards the volcano. Here, begin your trek along a green path that takes you right into the heart of the Bandama Crater. At the very centre of the crater, you will see an abandoned homestead; this was formerly the only inhabited volcanic crater in the world! From this point, enjoy interior views of the crater which will reveal the effects of the eruptions.

After resting for a while, continue walking up the side of the crater: depending on the weather, you should be rewarded at the end with a panoramic view of the northern part of Gran Canaria. It will then be time to re-join your coach and transfer back to the port.

Additional Information

This hike involves continuous walking for around three hours, covering a distance of approximately five miles, over rough and uneven terrain that includes steep gradients to enter and exit the crater. Good walking boots and layered waterproofs are recommended. There are no opportunities to use public conveniences during the hike. You must by phsically fit to participate in this tour. This tour is for small groups and has limited capacity.

Sit back and enjoy some of the sights of Gran Canaria at a leisurely pace, with time at leisure to explore the picturesque resort of Puerto de Mogan. Start by heading south towards Playa del Ingles - the island’s main resort. En route stop at Maspalomas sand dunes with their rippling sands and sinuous curves.

Next, you’ll pause at a viewpoint overlooking modern Puerto Rico apartments built into the side of the hills that rise from the shoreline. Your tour concludes with a visit to the resort of Puerto Mogan. This resort with its backdrop of hills, white houses festooned with Bougainvillea and beachside promenade, offers a haven to enjoy some free time.

During 90 minutes of free time, perhaps stroll along the harbour, browse the shops or just take it easy in one of the cafes before returning to Las Palmas.

This tour involves walking of up to approximately 600 yards, with further walking at Puerto de Mogan town at your own discretion during your free time. There may be an extended walk to the main town, depending on the drop-off point. This tour involves winding roads and is not suitable for those who suffer from vertigo. It can take up to one hour from Las Palmas to reach the south of the island. The duration of this tour may be affected by local traffic.

Join us and travel south of Las Palmas to the resort town of Puerto Mogan, a modern resort with a timeless Mediterranean atmosphere. During the excursion you will embark on a submarine adventure for a unique underwater experience. Seated in the submarine, travel 20-25 metres underwater and capture the underwater world of Puerto Mogan through a porthole.

Afterwards there will also be an opportunity to explore Puerto Mogan with time at leisure, perhaps take a stroll through its bustling marina or relax in one of the local cafes or restaurants. After your visit to Puerto Mogan, return to the port of Las Palmas by coach.

Additional Information

There is approximately 550 yards of essential walking over flat ground. Walking during time at leisure is at your discretion. Access to the submarine is by vertical stairs through a hatch, approximately nine steep steps (ladder). There are no toilet facilities on board the submarine. The submarine part of the tour will last approximately 35–45 minutes and will travel approximately 20-25 metres in depth. This tour may operate in a different order. The submarine has limited capacity. The drive to and from Puerto Mogan is approximately one hour each way.

Join us on this easy tour of Northern Gran Canaria visiting the village of Teror, with its whitewashed houses and ornate balconies, and the town of Arucas, home to the Duchess Gardens. Leaving Las Palmas, drive to Teror, where upon arrival you'll set off on a short tour on foot with your guide. Enjoy an outside visit of the cathedral of Our Lady of the Pine, considered one of the most important churches in the Canaries after shepherds saw an apparition of the Virgin Mary nearby.

Then, continue by coach to Arucas, which is home to the Parish Church of San Juan Bautista, created by local master stonemasons – resulting in the town being declared an area of historic-artistic interest. A visit to this town would not be complete without a stop at the Duchess Gardens. Take a stroll through the gardens, filled with Canarian and tropical plants, before returning to the ship.

This tour is graded as easy as there is up to 450 yards of essential walking and it includes two stops of approximately 30-40 minutes. Further walking at any of the stops will be at your discretion.

Located in Cañadas del Teide National Park is Mount Teide, the highest mountain in all of the Spanish territories. The soaring peak and surrounding arid landscape offers contrasting panoramic views, and this tour takes you on the cable car to the summit so you can see the national park from above.

Setting off from Santa Cruz your drive will take you through the Esperanza Forest and on to the National Park. On reaching the cable car station at approximately 7700 feet above sea level, a short stop will be made to admire the view before boarding the cable car. Make sure you have your camera close to hand during this eight-minute ride to the mountain’s 12,198-foot summit. You have free time here to take in the vistas of sprawling mountains punctuated by rugged petrified rock.

Then return to the lower station to rejoin your coach for a scenic drive that takes in more of this unique island’s countryside, before finally arriving back at the port.

There is approximately three-quarters-of-a-mile of walking during this excursion. Some over uneven surfaces and inclines. There are 25 steps to access the cable car. We recommend that you wear flat walking shoes. This excursion involves spending several hours at altitudes ranging from 7,500 to 12,000 feet above sea level. We recommend that you wear layered clothing and bring a warm jacket as it can be cold and windy. Each cable-car takes a maximum of 44 passengers and travels to the top in under eight minutes; you may need to stand in a queue while waiting to board.

Set off for a scenic drive through north Tenerife as you head for the haven of the Orchid Gardens. En route, you’ll pass through Oratava Valley, pausing for photographs at the Humboldt Viewpoint. Have your camera ready to record the views here which stretch from Mount Tiede to the coast of Puerto de la Cruz. The viewpoint is named after the explorer and naturalist Alexander Humboldt, who visited the island in 1799. He also visited the garden that previously stood on the site of what is now the Orchid Gardens, established in 1774 and the oldest on the island.

Upon arrival at the gardens, you will be welcomed by one of the owners who will act as your guide. In their company, explore the garden with its water feature, Dragon Tree, believed to be over 400 years old, and of course the collection of orchids, housed and displayed in a curving walkway. As well as yourself, past visitors to the garden have included the author Agatha Christie and the prolific and celebrated Victorian botanical artist, Marianne North. Afterwards, take time out to relax in the Orchid Gardens’ cafe as you enjoy some refreshments before returning to your ship.

This tour involves walking of at least 650 yards over uneven terrain with gravel-covered areas with some slopes and steps to negotiate. Comfortable, non-slip shoes are recommended.

After leaving the busy harbour of Santa Cruz, enjoy a drive along Maritime Avenue to the village of San Andrés, one of the island’s oldest settlements dating back to 1497. The village is renowned for its golden beach, Las Teresitas, which was made partly from 238,000 tons of sand imported from the former Spanish Sahara. Pause for photographs here before driving on to El Bailadero, the highest point in this area, offering panoramic views of a wild landscape.

Through a tunnel, you then reach the other side of the Anaga Mountains and the hidden village of Taganana, where you stop to sample some local wine and cheese. Once refreshed, continue through the living museum of Mercedes Forest to Pico del Ingles, the Mirador del Carmen and Cantera: all offering more views of the wild countryside and northern coast. You return to Santa Cruz via La Laguna, pausing to visit the 18th-century ‘Iglesia del Cristo’ (Christ Church) if a service is not taking place.

Additional Information

There will be at least 500 yards of walking with a steep slope from the refreshment venue to the coach. The journey through the Anaga Mountains involves travelling on steep, winding roads - vertigo sufferers should take this into consideration.

Discover Tenerife’s most striking natural feature, Mount Teide, without the exertion of a demanding hike. Rising to a height of 12,000 feet, it is the highest peak in Spanish territory and has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Your excursion begins with a drive towards the old colonial capital of La Laguna, situated in the Aguere Valley.

After passing through the photographic surroundings, journey south along the base of the mountain range, through pine forests and foothills to Teide National Park. Declared a national park in 1954, the park includes an enormous volcanic crater measuring over 29 miles in circumference. The park is situated at an altitude of over one mile above sea level: in winter, snow and gale force winds often close roads through it; during the summer months, the arid landscape gives visitors the impression of having walked onto the set of a western movie and can reach temperatures of over 37°C. At the heart of the crater, you visit the National Parador Visitors’ Centre and stand in the shadows of the majestic Roques de García.

During the course of the tour, a stop will also be made for refreshments. On your return journey to Santa Cruz, there will be several photo stops where you can savour the sweeping scenery.

Additional Information

Walking during this excursion is at your discretion but you should expect to walk at least 500 yards over some uneven surfaces, and there may be a considerable amount of standing. We recommend that you take an extra layer of clothing as temperatures towards the top of the mountain may be considerably colder than at sea level.

Seek out whales and dolphins in their natural habitat in the waters of southern Tenerife. Leaving the pier to Santa Cruz de Tenerife, travel one-hour by coach to the harbour of Puerto Colon in Playa des Las Americas.

Upon arrival, board one of the catamarans (not exclusive to Saga guests) in search of whales and dolphins. Pilot and sperm whales lurk in the waters around the island of Tenerife all year round and you may also see dolphins or other species of whales if you are lucky.

The boat used during this excursion is not exclusive to Saga guests. This excursion involves minimal walking but there are about eight steps to negotiate when getting on and off the catamaran and you should be a confident swimmer if you wish to go in the water. There are toilet facilities on board the boat and steps are required to access them. The abundant colour and sheer variety of plants, flowers and vegetation that thrive in the Canary Islands is the focus on this excursion. First, take a drive along the island’s main highway to Puerto de la Cruz, an old colonial town on the north coast. Enjoy some free time to explore the town at your leisure.

After, the first garden you visit is the Jardin Botanico, founded by a royal decree of King Charles III of Spain in 1788. He wanted to create a nursery where plants, shrubs and flowers, brought by the Conquistadors from the New World, could acclimatise to Spanish soil. Many of the plants here are the original specimens, delivered shortly after the opening of the garden. The centrepiece is a huge South American fig tree whose enormous branches and roots have created an outlandish treehouse.

From the Jardin Botanico, embark on a drive to the Orchid Gardens of Sitio Litre, which have welcomed many distinguished visitors including the famous crime writer Agatha Christie. These tranquil gardens are bursting with colour and have the largest collection of orchids in the Canary Islands. Here, enjoy tea or coffee with pastries and perhaps browse the shop before the return drive to Santa Cruz.

Enjoy a visit to the unique El Paso Silk Museum and the restored 17th-century sugar estate, Hotel Hacienda de Abajo. Sit back and enjoy the lush scenery as you travel along mountain roads, passing vineyards and banana plantations en route to El Paso. Upon arrival, a short stroll takes you to the small silk museum where you can witness silk being weaved by a 500-year-old process - the only place in Europe where this method is still used.

Afterwards, it is time to visit a restored 17th-century sugar estate, now the small and luxurious Hotel Hacienda de Abajo. Surrounded by rich vegetation and botanical gardens, this historic manor house hosts a collection of art on display, including sculptures, paintings, furniture and porcelain, in addition to some tapestries. Fresh fruit punch will be served on arrival before your guide will take you on a tour of the main rooms.

Afterwards, a selection of teas and pastries will be served on a terrace overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, weather permitting. On your return journey to Santa Cruz, a short photo-stop will be made at La Glorieta Square, allowing you to feast your eyes on the mosaics by local artist Luis Morera.

Over the past century, the volcanic origins of La Palma has shaped its landscapes. Join us and explore the volcanic vistas as you head off the beaten track in a 4x4 bus. This excursion explores different habitats and their unique biodiversity, from grassland, coastal, forest and freshwater species with a special focus on endemic birds. Set in a peaceful cove, Câmara de Lobos features a cluster of white-washed buildings with red-tiled roofs overlooking the sea. Leaving the port, travel west, along the winding coastline towards the picturesque fishing village of Câmara de Lobos. Once painted by Sir Winston Churchill, enjoy time at leisure to explore the historic centre of the town. After your visit, your tour continues with a drive towards Cabo Girão, passing by vineyards, steep valleys and pine and eucalyptus forest.

Enjoy a stop at Cabo Girão, the second highest sea cliff in the world, for a breathtaking view along the coast and over Funchal. After, return to Funchal, stopping at the Farmer’s Market for some free time before reaching your waiting ship.

Most of the walking on this tour is at your discretion, each visit involves walking over uneven and cobbled ground. Walking of up to two miles is recommended if you want to explore each place fully.

Quinta de Santa Luzia is a traditional working Quinta that has been in the Blandy Family for seven generations. Located near the centre of Funchal, the vines here are cultivated in trellis form and on large terraces. This family-owned vineyard has been recognised for its efforts to improve to more sustainable methods of viticulture and the protection of biodiversity in the vineyard.

From the port, take a short drive to the vineyard where you will enjoy a guided tour of the vineyards, gardens and bio farming area. This will be followed by a tasting of several Blandy’s Madeira wines paired with local snacks, including traditional honey cake and handmade chocolates. Enjoy a tasting in one of the traditional houses inside the Quinta’s terrace as the sun sets over Funchal Bay.

Return to the ship in the evening.

This is a small group tour with limited availability. It is recommended that you wear comfortable clothing and bring a jacket or cardigan as temperatures cool down in the evening. Visibility from all the scenic outlooks is dependent on the weather and therefore cannot be guaranteed. There will be just over half a mile of walking required over uneven and cobbled ground and 40 steps to negotiate when visiting the vineyards.

Following a ‘Levada’ trail is one of the most enjoyable ways of seeing Madeira. These irrigation channels were created in the 19th century by the Portuguese settlers, who painstakingly carved them out of the rock by hand. Designed to carry fresh water from the north to the drier southern regions of the island, they helped to create many of the lush landscapes that can be seen today.

This guided walk will follow the course of The Levadas for over three miles, allowing you to admire the verdant plants, mountain views and green farmland that cover Madeira. You will first be driven to Vale Paraiso, where you set off for your two-hour walk. The first half will be a gentle stroll over fairly level ground, rising to the Camacha area for its surrounding views. The second stretch will take you all the way to Rochão, where you rejoin the coach for your return journey to the port.

Additional Information

This tour requires walking of at least three and a half miles over uneven terrain with many steps. You should be physically fit to participate, and we recommend that you wear flat walking shoes. There is limited capacity on this tour.

Leave the pier and head to the belvedere of Pico dos Barcelos, which offers a sweeping panorama. Continue next to the fishing village of Câmara de Lobos, which was once painted by Sir Winston Churchill. Known for its quaint, red-roofed houses and brightly painted fishing boats, its name translates to ‘The Sea Wolves’ Lair’.

To reach Cabo Girão, your coach takes you through pine woods and eucalyptus forests. Cabo Girão is said to be the second-highest sea cliff in Europe: it rises right out of the sea, and the viewpoint where you stop for photos offers coastal views along Funchal, and out to the distant horizon. Your journey then takes you up into the mountains, passing the vineyards of Estreito de Câmara Lobos, one of the most important winegrowing areas of the island. Many of the vines can be seen growing on terraces along the steep valleys that you pass on the way.

Arriving at the Adega da Quinta Restaurant, at Quinta d o Estreito, you can enjoy more panoramas over the coast. Nearby, you can spot the original wine cellar where barrels of Madeira wine, local brandy and ‘ginja’ - a sweet cherry liqueur - are stored. Sample some local wine and Portuguese cheese here before heading back to the ship.

There is approximately 450 yards of essential walking, some over cobbled and sloped ground (assuming you participate in walking at the photo stops). You may encounter a number of steps (some optional) and views are weather dependent. There are up to five steps at the restaurant.

Join us in search of the whales and dolphins in the sea surrounding Madeira, accompanied by a marine biologist and skipper. Before leaving, there will be a short introduction before your adventure begins; then set off on your RIB, fully equipped for observing dramatic marine life.

Thanks to lookouts on land who will guide your boat towards the mammals, you will likely see Short-finned Pilot Whales, Bottlenose Dolphins, Atlantic Spotted Dolphins and Common Dolphins that will leap and jump from the water displaying their acrobatic moves as they swim alongside the boats. If you are lucky, you may also spot a Risso’s Dolphin, a Beaked Whale or an Orca, all of which are occasional visitors to Madeira.

Lifejackets are supplied, but you must wear your own warm, waterproof clothing and sturdy nonslip shoes. You must be able to climb in and out of the RIB boat unaided. Dexterity is required to get on and off the high-positioned seats.
