Marvel at the floral delights of the Canaries

Lanzarote is deeply indebted to conservationist César Manrique – view his incredible achievements at the Cactus Garden and his former live-in studio which he created around five volcanic lava bubbles!

If you’re eagerly awaiting the unfurling of spring and long for the winter to draw to a close, why not join Saga Sapphire on this two-week cruise to the Atlantic’s subtropical islands, perennial favourites thanks to their glorious climate all year round. Discover the ‘Floral Isle’ of Madeira and contrast a trio of Canary Islands which all have wonderfully fertile soil in common. See the results in the traditional markets packed with farm-fresh produce, as well as look forward to exploring sunny squares decorated with colourful blooms. Keen gardeners can flex their green fingers on visits to a variety of gardens showcasing tropical and subtropical flora from around the world.

Days spent exploring ashore are balanced with leisurely days at sea which you can spend as you please. You’ll be able to broaden your horizons further during enlightening talks from a VIP gardener and practical DIY workshops where you may feel inspired to make a birdhouse for your feathered friends back home.

Also call at the Andalusian city of Cadiz, where you’ll have the chance to taste seasonal Spanish produce during a tapas workshop, and Lisbon, one of the greenest capitals in Europe.

Cadiz is the oldest continuously inhabited settlement in western Europe. In the city’s sinuous cobbled streets you’ll find a wealth of museums, churches and more than 100 watchtowers to explore, the most impressive of which is the 18th-century Torre Tavira. One way to experience the full flavour of the city is on a tapas workshop and bodegas tour.

Santa Cruz, Tenerife

Santa Cruz, Tenerife

Explore Ashore

Plan your excursions and time ashore with our expert concierge team on board. Here's some inspiration for this cruise...

Admiring Madeira’s subtropical blooms

See a stunning array of flora thriving at the formal Palheiro Gardens. Currently owned by the Blandy family, famous producers of Madeiran wine exported the world over, the gardens were originally laid out in the 18th century and offer lovely views over Funchal.

Cadiz on foot

If you prefer to discover the age-old city of Cadiz at your own pace, ask our Explore Ashore team for a map of the city’s walking routes. There are four to choose from and our team can assist you with picking the one best suited to you.

Discover Tenerife’s green side

See New World flora, including a outlandish South American fig, at Jardin Botanico, founded by royal decree on 1788. The island’s subtropical climate made it the perfect place for uprooted shrubs and flowers acquired by the Conquistadors to acclimatise to Spanish soil. You can also see the largest collection of orchids in the Canary Islands at the Risco Nello Garden, along with waterfalls and colourful flower terraces.

Please note

All excursions mentioned are optional, at an additional cost, and are subject to availability and change. Some of the highlights detailed may only be seen on optional excursions or by exploring independently.
