Places to visit in the Mediterranean

The Mediterranean is best known for sun, sea and sand, but cruises to the region prove there’s so much more to discover when you travel by ship.

The attractions of the Mediterranean are many and varied, and the very nature of cruising – waking up in a new port of call every day – make it the perfect destination for cruising, combining many destinations all on one holiday.

The Adriatic is a gem; from the gorgeous isles of Croatia to the world-famous cities of Italy, be inspired.

Ancient Valletta

The sun rising over Valletta, Malta

If ancient history is your thing, don’t miss Valletta, the island of Malta’s cultural capital, a literal treasure trove of grand architecture such as St John’s Co-Cathedral which houses two works of art by Caravaggio.

The Rock of Gibraltar

The famous Rock of Gibraltar

Starting in the east, one of the region’s top destinations is Gibraltar, dominated by the iconic Rock. This British colony offers tax-free shopping in familiar high-street shops, a famous settlement of Barbary apes and a fascinating insight into yesteryear with its maze of Roman tunnels and caves snaking beneath the ground.

Gaudi's Creations

Park Guell by Gaudi in Barcelona

Southern Spain and her sunshine isles are another big draw, and who could resist the opportunity to compare the Romanesque wonders of Valencia with the surreal creations of Gaudi in Barcelona? Or spending lazy days ashore on Minorca and Almeria, often called Spain’s ‘best kept secret’?

Explore Algiers

You might even like to join an optional excursion to explore Algiers, a rare opportunity that you’d be hard pressed to achieve on a standard holiday!

Not strictly in the Med, but...

Lisbon Monument

And last but far from least, is Lisbon. Now while not strictly Mediterranean – it sits on the Atlantic coast – its royal palaces, bars radiating soulful fado music, cobbled streets and a vast waterfront Monument to the Discoveries – no one can deny that the vibrant Portuguese capital matches it Med counterparts for attractions, history and sheer character.
