Northern Lights and Festive Delights Q&A

Simon Giles, Destination Expert

Discover the highlights of our Northern Lights and Festive Delights cruise departing in November 2025 and learn why this cruise is particularly unique during a Q&A with destination expert Simon Giles…

Why is winter a good time to experience the Northern Lights?

The 'Aurora Borealis', also known as the Northern Lights, in the sky over Norway

A voyage inside the Arctic Circle during winter provides a perfect opportunity to spot the magical Aurora Borealis, when the skies are at their darkest. Whether on an included excursion in Narvik or searching the skies from your private balcony, that first glimpse of the lights is a moment you will never forget.

What makes this cruise particularly unique?

The Christmas market in Bremen, Germany

This itinerary is certainly something different for Saga Cruises during the winter season and promises to be a very special voyage. Guests on board can combine the excitement of sailing into the Arctic Circle with the festive traditions of Norway and the atmosphere of one of Europe’s finest Christmas markets in Bremen.

What is the best way to see the Aurora Borealis on a Northern Lights cruise?

Whilst a little bit of luck and patience is always required, you can enhance your chances of a Aurora Borealis sighting by escaping the light pollution and heading outside of town. However, many of our guests have their best sightings from the ship during evenings at sea. The crew on the bridge will alert guests of aurora activity, prompting a quick trip back to the cabin to wrap up warm and head out on deck.

What can you expect when you visit Norway during the Polar Night?

Narvik illuminated, Norway

Our visit to Narvik is going to be a very unique experience for those on board. Although the sun doesn’t rise above the horizon all day, the residents of Narvik light the skies instead with a wonderful array of twinkling festive lights that adorn houses and shops.

What is the weather like in the Arctic Circle at this time of year?

Weather can be changeable during winter, and it will certainly be chilly inside the Arctic Circle, especially with the lack of sunshine! However, all guests will be given a complimentary winter jacket to keep out the cold.

Do you have any top tips on what to pack for a winter cruise to Norway?

The onion approach is always recommended during winter, with layers that can easily be removed when visiting indoor venues. Your complimentary winter jacket will keep you warm whilst exploring outside.

What kind of excursions are available during this cruise?

Tivoli Gardens illuminated with Christmas lights, Denmark

A wide range of excursions will be available that showcase the very best of the region’s winter scenery and festive celebrations. The mountain scenery surrounding Åndalsnes is spectacular during winter and can be discovered on a memorable train ride. Copenhagen’s world-famous Tivoli Gardens amusement park is magical during the build up to Christmas with a wonderful market and colourful decorations.

Are there any included excursions?

Bergen's waterfront in the snow, Norway

We are delighted to be offering an included excursion in every port on this cruise. See Bergen’s colourful Bryggen district and Trondheim’s towering Nidaros Cathedral, search for the Northern Lights in Narvik and explore one of Europe’s finest Christmas markets in Bremen. This and so much more can be seen during your included excursions.

How do the Christmas Markets of Norway compare to those of Copenhagen and Bremen?

Norway’s Christmas markets are generally on a smaller scale to the famous markets of Germany and large European cities. The cities of Bergen, Stavanger and Trøndheim all host quaint and delightful markets, selling unique gifts and delicious local treats. Look out for musical performances, horse and carriage rides and amusement rides which really help to bring the experience to life.

What are your top three must-do excursions or experiences on this cruise?

A view down Lysefjord, Norway

Whilst in Bergen, I highly recommend taking the funicular ride to the top of Mount Floyen for a stunning view over the city and fjord. A short distance from Stavanger is the beautiful Lysefjord and a sightseeing cruise provides a great opportunity to see the winter scenery and the much-photographed Pulpit Rock. Finally, a visit to Copenhagen’s Tivoli Gardens is a must during December, when the amusement park is transformed into a winter wonderland.

What activities are available during the days at sea?

There are plenty of activities to try out on board during sea days. Spirit of Discovery is well equipped with a library, fitness centre, craft and card rooms, a spa, theatre and a large Lido area with a swimming pool and wraparound promenade. There’s a programme of live entertainment in the evenings too, including live music, cinema screenings and shows.

ORCA will be on board too

A whale's tail breaching the surface of the ocean in Alesund, Norway

Our Northern Lights and Festive Delights cruise is joined by wildlife experts from ORCA, the foremost European whale and dolphin conservation charity, who are devoted to studying marine wildlife and protecting it for future generations. Enjoy the opportunity to spot whales, dolphins, seabirds and an array of other wildlife out on deck throughout your voyage, the perfect vantage point to view and learn more about wildlife in their natural habitat.
