Day 5 Lelystad to Enkhuizen 🎧

Arrive into Lelystad this morning embark on an included excursion to the car-free village of Giethoorn, the ‘Venice of the Netherlands’, where distinctive thatched houses line the canals. The lake town was named after the large number of goat horns found here by 12th-century settlers and it was these men who built the canals on which you’ll cruise by motorised punt.

Float beneath a series of narrow arched bridges to Giethoorn’s central island, now a nature reserve. Here a shallow lake is inhabited by many rare birds. There are no roads in the centre of the village, so locals use punts to get around and cars remain outside the village.

After your punt excursion you can look forward to refreshments served with a slice of Dutch apple cake.

This afternoon you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy an optional clog painting workshop on board or embark on an optional trip to see the archaeological artifacts tracing Flevoland’s history of land reclamation in Bataviawerf.

Cruise to Enkhuizen this evening and moor overnight.

Enkhuizen Netherlands Europe

Day 6 Enkhuizen to Hoorn 🎧

Enkhuizen, the Netherlands

Spend the morning exploring Enkhuizen or join an optional excursion to Zuiderzee Museum.

This afternoon and optional excursion visits the harbour town of Hoorn, with its 16th and 17th-century town houses – the Dutch East India Company made it a wealthy trading town. See the State Council building, which houses the Westfries Museum and its collection of ceramic tiles, silver, china and model ships.

An optional cycling tour of Hoorn and the surrounding tulip fields is also available (this excursion must be booked before your cruise).

Cruise overnight for Amsterdam.

Hoorn Netherlands Europe

Day 7 Amsterdam 🎧

The Bloemenmarkt, Amsterdam's floating flower market

Arrive in the early hours and have a full day in the capital of the Netherlands.

This morning you can enjoy an included walking tour with a focus on local food and culture, or opt for an included coach tour and canal cruise and see the Royal Palace on Dam Square, the floating flower market, the Central Railway Station, which is built on thousands of wooden piles, the 19th-century Rijksmuseum, the famous Skinny Bridge, the Montelbaanstoren tower and more.

This afternoon perhaps join an optional excursion to Volendam, Edam and the Katwoude Cheese Farm.

Day 8 Amsterdam to UK

Disembark Spirit of the Rhine after breakfast ahead of your return journey to the UK.

At the north end, you'll see a monument in honour of those who participated, many of whom lost their lives. Continue to the old church in Oosterbeek, where the Allies took refuge prior to withdrawing, passing fields where the landings took place. At the Airborne Museum, see photographs and memorabilia, along with anti-tank guns and a Sherman tank standing where it was left in battle.

Return to Arnhem via the Airborne Cemetery, the final resting place of 1,748 Allied troops.
