Perched above the Mediterranean Sea, the clifftop citadel of Bonifacio is best explored on foot. Board Bonifacio’s little train to travel from the pier up the steep cliffs to the medieval citadel. Pass through the historic Bosco Quarter, with the St Francis convent and the church of St Dominique.
As you arrive at the clifftop citadel, enjoy views of the Strait of Bonifacio and as far as Sardinia on a clear day. Disembark the little train and head on foot through narrow streets flanked by towering granite and marvel at the Romanesque architecture of the imposing Église St Marie-Majeure. You will find yourself in the heart of the historic city on Rue des Deux Emperors, or Two Emperors Street, where Napoleon and Charles V both lodged.
Pass through Porte de Gênes which was once the only entrance through the walls of the citadel. Here begins the hundred steps going back down to the marina, passing by St Erasme church dedicated to the fishermen and all mariners.
From here, you have the option of returning to the ship or continuing to explore the town independently.
Additional Information
Please note: Expect to walk up to two-and-a-half miles over uneven ground, cobblestones and inclines throughout. The little train is used as a shuttle service to access the upper town, where you begin your walking tour.
