Lisbon, Portugal

The sprawling city of Lisbon is spread across seven hills. It boasts two UNESCO-listed sites: Jeronimos Monastery, where Vasco da Gama is entombed and Bélem Tower, built in his honour. An included panoramic excursion is a great way to see some of the highlights.

Leixoes (for Oporto), Portugal

From Leixoes, an included panoramic excursion will take you to Oporto. It is set beside the Douro River which has served as the lifeblood of the city for centuries. On one bank lies Villa Nova de Gaia’s port wine lodges, which produce the city’s famous fortified wine, while on the other is the UNESCO-listed Ribeira old town. Cobbled streets climb the steep hillside which is crammed with historic buildings, including the 12th-century cathedral, neoclassical Stock Exchange and Manueline-style Church of Santa Clara. The wooden Rabelo cargo boats, which once ferried barrels of port now carry sightseers along the river – the Ponte Dom Luis I bridge offers a good vantage point from which to appreciate the entire riverscape.

Vigo, Spain

Vigo is a major fishing port, set in the wine-growing region of Rias Baixas on Spain’s Galician coast. This modern city has a historic quarter, Casco Vello, whose central square is the arcaded Plaza de la Constitución, a neoclassical cathedral and 17th-century Castro Fortress.

Take advantage of the opportunity to visit UNESCO-listed Santiago de Compostela which is a treasure trove of Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque buildings – the greatest of which is easily the 11th-century cathedral thought to enshrine St James the Apostle.

Bilbao, Spain

Founded in 1300, Bilbao developed into a shipbuilding centre during the 19th century. Contrast the Renaissance, Baroque and modernist architecture of the historic centre with newer additions to the cityscape. The most striking of these is the riverside Guggenheim Museum, a contorted wave-like structure clad in titanium plates that reflect the surrounding art district which you will see on an included panoramic excursion. Other highlights include the funicular which offers panoramic views on its way to the summit of Artxanda and the sweeping parkland of Doña Casilda Iturrizar Park, the city’s largest green space.

Bordeaux, France

Cruise through the Gironde Estuary and up the Garonne River into Bordeaux for an overnight stop. Hailed as the ‘very essence of elegance’ by HRH Queen Elizabeth II, it offers a heady mix of historic art and architecture which blossomed during the Age of Enlightenment, placing its 18th-century centre on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Key among the highlights are the Place de la Bourse and its 21st-century reflective pool.

Visit the world-famous Margaux wine district, located north of Bordeaux. The village is home to a number of prestigious wine estates.
La Pallice (for La Rochelle), France

From La Pallice, visit the ‘White City’ of La Rochelle, so-called for the limestone facades of its many historic buildings which gleam in the sun. Echoes of its significance as a major port up until the 17th century are evident in the three 14th-century fortified towers that guard the historic harbour. The old town is a charming combination of arcaded walkways, half-timbered houses and Renaissance architecture.

Lisbon Overview - Included Excursion
Walking difficulty: Panoramic tour
Discover the city of Lisbon on this panoramic sightseeing tour, with a number of stops, including a visit to the imposing statue of Christ the Redeemer. Leaving the port, drive past the Jerónimos Monastery, built using limestone over a period of 100 years starting in 1501; UNESCO-listed Belém Tower, constructed with the primary objective of protecting the bay; the Monument to the Discoveries; the pink façade of Belém Palace, the official residence of the Portuguese president; the new Coach Museum; Avenida da Liberdade, the most central avenue in Lisbon and a popular shopping district for both tourists and locals; and Edward VII park. You will also cross the 25th April suspension bridge over the Tagus River to see the imposing statue of Christ the Redeemer. Stretching across the estuary to the Tagus River in Lisbon the suspension bridge is considered as a twin sister of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco because of its similar design. The bridge is an impressive sight, and it also offers a breathtaking view when crossing it. Visible from most parts of Lisbon and beyond, the statue of Christ the Redeemer (Cristo Rei) stands a striking 270 feet high on its angular pedestal, overlooking the south bank of the Tagus River. One of Portugal’s most iconic landmarks standing tall with its robed arms outstretched, it was erected in 1959 and modelled on the famous Cristo Redentor in Rio de Janeiro. Then, enjoy your scenic drive back to the port.

This sightseeing tour of Oporto allows you to capture the colourful, rising architecture of this city, from the comfort of your tour vehicle, with plenty of photography stops – so keep your camera fully charged. See the Monument to the Peninsular War, commemorating the military conflict between Napoleon’s empire and Spain. Your guide may then point out the House of Music – a curiously modernist piece of architecture curving up from the ground: the sights then seem to come thick and fast: Crystal Palace’s domed form, surrounded by greenery, Clérigos Tower – built by the city’s Brotherhood of Clerics – and Avenida dos Aliados, a popular street filled with shops. As you pass the Sao Bento Railways Station, you will quickly spot the city’s cathedral, boasting a wonderful blend of Baroque and Romanesque architecture. Cross over the Infante Bridge, which offers views across the historical centre before following the river back to the ship, past the Ribeira quarters.

Snapshot of Bilbao – Included Excursion
Walking difficulty: Panoramic tour
Enjoy a tour of Bilbao, the provincial capital of Vizcaya. Your tour starts with a drive to the Getxo district, where you stop to see the amazing Vizcaya Bridge. The oldest transporter bridge in the world, it is 536 feet long and crosses the River Nervion.
Leaving Getxo, your coach takes you along the right bank of the Nervion into the city centre, with its eclectic mixture of Gothic, Renaissance and Modernist architecture. Pass by the Guggenheim Museum, designed by Frank Gehry, which was described by the celebrated American architect Philip Johnson as ‘the greatest building of our time’, before returning to the ship.

Arrabida Mountains and Lisbon Bridges
Walking difficulty: Panoramic tour
This excursion takes you to the lesser explored area south of Lisbon – Arrábida. During the tour, cross the two imposing bridges that connect the two sides of the Tagus river. After leaving the port, head over the Vasco da Gama bridge, an immense bridge measuring over 10 miles long and named after the great explorer Vasco da Gama, who found the sea route to India in 1498. Then journey through the town of Setúbal which used to be a bustling port during Roman occupation before arriving at the Arrábida Natural Park. This natural beauty is where the blue of the sea alternates with the white tones of the chalk cliffs and the depths of the green vegetation that covers the mountain range. Continue past Azeitão where the wines produced in the surrounding area are still famous today, especially the table wines and the “muscatel” wine. Then find your way back to the ship crossing the April 25th suspension bridge, one of Lisbon’s most outstanding landmarks. Until the bloodless revolution on April 25th, it was named Salazar Bridge. The bridge was completed on August 6th, 1966, afterwards, a train platform was added, connecting the city with the municipality of Almada. Continue past Azeitão where the wines produced in the surrounding area are still famous today, especially the table wines and the “muscatel” wine. We will then find our way back to the ship crossing the April 25th suspension bridge, one of Lisbon’s most outstanding landmarks. Until the bloodless revolution on 25th of April, it was named Salazar Bridge. Lisbon Vintage Tram and Port Wine

If you want to take in the sights and absorb the atmosphere of Lisbon at a relaxed pace, finishing with a taste of the local tipple, then this tour is for you. Lisbon’s vintage trams are among the city’s icons, and this tour includes a ride on one of these historical vehicles. A coach will take you into the heart of the city where you will board a traditional wooden-bodied tram for a scenic one-hour journey through Alfama and Bairro Alto, two of the oldest districts of the city which are characterised by winding alleyways and whitewashed houses with flowers on their balconies. Following your tram journey, you will visit a local establishment and be served a glass of white port accompanied by white chocolate; you can then enjoy a glass of ten-year-old Tawny port with a miniature ‘Pastel de Nata’ cake. The tour would not be complete without a panoramic coach ride through the city, viewing some of Lisbon’s famous landmarks such as the Monument to the Discoveries, Belém Tower, Jerónimos Monastery, the far end of the Edward VII Park, the Rossio district and St George’s Castle.

The trams are authentic historical vehicles and are accessed by a steep flight of three steps. There is no commentary during the tram ride, but your guide will describe the journey before you board. The trams are exclusive to Saga passengers. You will need to walk at least 250 yards from the tram to the port tasting venue.
Lisbon Tuk Tuk Tour (sharing)

Within the depths of Lisbon’s old quarters, narrow cobbled streets weave their way past cafes and bars, leading to several landmarks which you’ll see during this tour. The areas are often inaccessible to cars and buses, however, there is one mode of transport that is well-equipped for this sightseeing exploration – the ‘tuk tuk’. This three-wheeled vehicle inherits its nickname from the noise that early models once made – a spluttering ‘tuk tuk tuk’. Since their creation over fifty years ago, the design has evolved – many tuk tuks are electric, and Lisbon is Europe’s E-Tuk capital of the world! Climb aboard your miniature tour vehicle, accompanied by your knowledgeable driver guide. Pass through Bairro Alta and the district known as Alfama before arriving at the Nossa Senhora do Monte viewpoint. Near St George’s Castle, it offers a sweeping view of the city below. The tour continues through the city’s steep and narrow, historic streets. There is a brief stop at Chiado in the centre of Lisbon, an elegant and bohemian neighbourhood, between Bairro Alto and Baixa Pombalina. It is frequently compared to Paris’ Montmartre district, rebuilt after it was destroyed by fire in 1998. The most famous streets are Rua do Carmo, which houses the ruins of a church by the same name and Rua Garrett, in the centre of Chiado. See the square and its surrounding streets, packed with cafes, theatres and museums. Then, enjoy a traditional snack of marmalade and cheese paired with a glass of port before returning to the ship.

Lisbon Downtown Walking Tour
Walking difficulty: Strenuous Activity
This small group walking tour is the ideal way to get up close to the city’s most significant examples of historical architecture, starting with Alfama – a labyrinth of narrow cobbled alleyways, flanked by colourful houses. The area was once located outside of the city walls and was inhabited by the city’s sailors and dock workers. Continue to 12th-century Sé de Lisboa, the cathedral of Lisbon, an important site of pilgrimage and one of Portugal’s most significant monuments. On your way to Rossio, once the liveliest square in the city, your guide may point out the Elevador de Santa Justa – a marvel of 19th-century industrialisation. The elevator utilises wrought iron as decorative art. Enjoy a stop at Confeitaria Nacional – one of Lisbon’s oldest coffee shops. After some refreshments, walk through Rua Augusta, passing through its arches to reach Praca do Comércio, also known as ‘Black Horse Square’, named after the statue of King Jose I which occupies a dominating central position. Your final destination is Casa dos Bicos. Built in the 16th century, the house boasts a ‘pincushion façade’ consisting of 1125 diamond-shaped spikes. After walking among Lisbon’s historical architecture, you return to the ship.

Portuguese School of Equestrian Art
Walking difficulty: Moderate Activity
The Portuguese School of Equestrian Art is a national treasure, promoting the teaching, practice and global dissemination of the traditional Portuguese equestrian art. Entwined with the traditions and customs of the 18th-century Portuguese court, the school provides a glimpse into the past through the elegant “dance” of the thoroughbred Lusitano horses. After a 45-minute drive from Lisbon arrive at the Equestrian Art School where upon arrival a member of staff will be waiting for you to offer an introduction to the venue. Take a look behind the scenes to see how the handlers care for the horses. Then at Henrique Calado Riding Ring, watch the warm-up and training exercises in preparation for their upcoming galas and shows. After your visit, return to Lisbon by coach.
Additional Information
This tour requires up to 45 minutes of standing and essential walking, covering a maximum of 500 metres, and eight steps. Therefore, this tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility. Guests should wear flat footwear.
Oporto Sightseeing and Douro River Cruise

This tour enables you to see Oporto's main points of interest from the comfort of your coach and a riverboat. Your journey begins with a drive through Foz, the cosmopolitan waterfront district. From here you head into the old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you can see the iconic Palácio de Cristal and the 18th-century Torre dos Clérigos or Clergymen’s Tower - the highest point of the town at 245 feet. Continue along the impressive Avenida dos Aliados which leads to the town hall. After pausing to look at the exterior of São Bento Railway Station, take in a host of other key sights including the 12th-century cathedral, the former stock exchange, the Church of São Francisco and the Dom Luis I and Maria Pia bridges. After your coach tour, see the sights from the water with a short river trip across the Douro. You then visit a local port wine cellar for a guided tour and the opportunity to taste the port - a delicious local speciality. Finally, return to your ship having taken in the sights of Oporto and its surroundings.

There will be approximately 600 yards of essential walking across flat, uneven ground. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility. Due to recently implemented traffic restrictions, the order of this tour may change. Due to newly created pedestrianised sections of Vila Nova de Gaia, the visit to the wine cellars may involve extra walking. Guests will need to negotiate a stepped gangway to access the boat, these steps can range in height due to the tide.
Treasures and Traditions of Porto

When exploring the bustling city of Porto, you might miss some hidden gems. This walking tour delves deeper into the city and seeks out those places important to both locals and international visitors alike, accompanied by an audio guide so that you don't miss out on any fascinating facts. Travel directly to the centre of the city to see Porto’s tallest building – the Clérigos Tower Discover why the 246-foot tower was so important before making a visit to one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world – according to Time, The Guardian and Lonely Planet: Livraria Lello. Upon entering, bathe in the art nouveau splendour, featuring Gothic-revival elements and dominated by a crimson staircase. Continue to the Sao Bento Railway Station, important for more than transporting passengers from A to B. The walls are decorated by blue and white artistic mural, recognising poignant moments from Portugal’s past. Your next destination is the Congregados Church, built during the 17th century and designed by André Soares. Finally, pass along Rue Santa Catarina – Porto’s main shopping street – and arrive at a nearby cafe. You then have some free time to continue your exploration before returning to the ship.

There will be at least one mile of essential walking on this tour, and frequent steps to negotiate. At the bookshop there is up to 40 steps to negotiate. To enter certain venues, queuing may be required. We recommend that you wear flat walking shoes. The tour may operate in a different order.
Traditions and Tastes of Aveiro
Walking difficulty: Moderate Activity
On this half-day tour, explore the city of Aveiro, nestled along the Ria de Aveiro. The city is distinguished by its canals, often filled with vibrant boats and lined with Art Nouveau style buildings. Capture some of the city on foot before navigating the canals by local boats, called Moliceiros. These slender and colourful vessels were historically used to collect algae and seaweed and are now used for sightseeing. Following your scenic ride, indulge in a taste of the local delicacy, "ovos moles," a sweet confection made from eggs and sugar originating from Aveiro, accompanied by a glass of sparkling wine. On your return journey by coach, capture the colourful fishermen’s houses, known as Palheiros, along the Costa Nova beach.

Oporto by Tuk Tuk
Walking difficulty: Easy Activity
Explore Oporto by Tuk Tuk as you depart from the cruise terminal, tracing the coastline towards the city. As you drive through Oporto, you’ll spot its historic landmarks including the Palacio da Bolsa, the UNESCO São Bento railway station and Porto Cathedral. Take in panoramic views of the city from Gaia and Jardim do Morro before delving into the city's core, where you can explore Rua Santa Catarina. There will also be the opportunity to enjoy a glass of port wine and a local sweet treat before returning to the ship by Tuk Tuk.
Additional Information
The Tuk-Tuks vary in size and, dependent on the seating configuration, will seat between two and four guests for a shared experience. The drive starts at the terminal in Matosinhos, so your tour includes a drive in the Tuk Tuk to and from Oporto, it takes at least 5-10 minutes to reach the formal entrance of Porto marked by the Castelo do Queijo roundabout and up to 25 minutes to reach the historical centre. The walking on this tour is minimal and at your discretion as most of the excursion is on the Tuk Tuk. You will need to walk from the ship to the Tuk Tuks. There are three steps to negotiate at the refreshment stop and a step to access the Tuk Tuks. Please consider taking an additional layer of clothing as elements of the ride may be colder than expected. Toilet facilities will be available upon request in local cafes, where a purchase of a refreshment may be required. The tour may operate in a different order to than described.
Leisurely Vigo and Baiona
Walking difficulty: Easy Activity
Leaving the port, head towards Guía Mountain, where you will enjoy a photo stop. This mountain guards the sea of Vigo and historically was a place where women lit bonfires to guide their sailor husbands home. The mountain is located in the upper part of the Teis neighbourhood and the park is dominated by the Nosa Señora das Neves hermitage. The tour then continues to Baiona, a coastal town in Galicia, where you will have leisure time to explore. The town is home to the Castle of Monterreal and you can find the town’s most sought-after streets scattered around the bay. Following your free time, meet your guide for your return journey to Vigo, passing by the medieval style bridge, La Ramallosa.

There is up to 400 yards of essential walking on this tour. You will have 75 minutes of free time in Baiona where walking is at your discretion, please note Baiona is mainly cobbled ground. There are four steps to access the coaches.
The historical gardens of Pazo de Rubianes
Walking difficulty: Strenuous Activity
Take a trip to the prim and proper gardens of Pazo de Rubianes. Located on the Arousa Estuary, the gardens surround a stately home that belongs to the only lord in Galicia. Accompanied by your guide, enjoy an exploration of the 27-acre formal gardens, which include giant eucalyptus trees, magnolias, olive trees and geometrical flowerbeds. Providing an international flair, camphor laurels from Asia and sequoias from California can also be seen. Surrounding the gardens are 62 acres of vineyards, the grapes from which produce the exclusive Albariño Pazo de Rubianes wine. As part of the excursion, you can try some of the wine for yourself before returning to the ship.

Upon arrival at Gorliz your climb between coastal slopes begins. Within a few steps stunning views take centre stage – extending across the Bay of Biscay. While picturesque, this bay has also proven dangerous, leading to the building of your first landmark – the Gorliz Lighthouse. Its narrow, modern form extends 68 feet atop the 541-foot cliffs, perfectly illustrating the area’s beauty and the necessary caution that traversing it requires. Further walking, much of it up hill will take you to the summit of Mount Ermua, offering time to perhaps reflect on your surrounding scenery and take photographs of the island of Billano (which can be seen on clear days) before returning to the port and your awaiting ship.
