Hike the spectacular Bandama Crater – Small Group Experience

The Bandama Caldera is one of the youngest volcanoes on the Canarian archipelago. Its crater is over 650 feet deep, has a diameter of almost three-quarters of a mile and was last active about 3,000 years ago, when a series of eruptions took place that gave the Santa Brígida district its distinctive topography.
Leaving the pier, your coach will take you up towards the volcano. Here, begin your trek along a green path that takes you right into the heart of the Bandama Crater. At the very centre of the crater, you will see an abandoned homestead; this was formerly the only inhabited volcanic crater in the world! From this point, enjoy interior views of the crater which will reveal the effects of the eruptions.
After resting for a while, continue walking up the side of the crater: depending on the weather, you should be rewarded at the end with a panoramic view of the northern part of Gran Canaria. It will then be time to re-join your coach and transfer back to the port.

Have your camera ready to record the views here which stretch from Mount Tiede to the coast of Puerto de la Cruz. Easy Teide

Gardens of the Valley
Walking difficulty: Strenuous Activity
The abundant colour and sheer variety of plants, flowers and vegetation that thrive in the Canary Islands is the focus on this excursion. First, take a drive along the island’s main highway to Puerto de la Cruz, an old colonial town on the north coast. Enjoy some free time to explore the town at your leisure.
After, the first garden you visit is the Jardin Botanico, founded by a royal decree of King Charles III of Spain in 1788. He wanted to create a nursery where plants, shrubs and flowers, brought by the Conquistadors from the New World, could acclimatise to Spanish soil. Many of the plants here are the original specimens, delivered shortly after the opening of the garden. The centrepiece is a huge South American fig tree whose enormous branches and roots have created an outlandish treehouse.
From the Jardin Botanico, embark on a drive to the Orchid Gardens of Sitio Litre, which have welcomed many distinguished visitors including the famous crime writer Agatha Christie. These tranquil gardens are bursting with colour and have the largest collection of orchids in the Canary Islands. Here, enjoy tea or coffee with pastries and perhaps browse the shop before the return drive to Santa Cruz.

Fire Mountain with Volcano BBQ
Walking difficulty: Easy Activity
Frequently included in our list of ‘top quality-scoring tours’, Fire Mountain with Volcano BBQ is certainly something unique that we are confident you will enjoy. It is known as the ‘Island of Volcanoes’ for good reason: the landscape of Lanzarote is punctuated by over 300 volcanic cones overlooking blackened lava fields which were created between 1730 and 1736 when almost a third of the island was covered in lava. Even today, volcanic activity can be observed in Timanfaya National Park and on this excursion, your BBQ meal will be cooked using the very same heat source that altered the island’s physical shape, as well as its agricultural and cultural identities.
Your tour vehicle leaves the port and, having passed through the whitewashed villages of Puerto del Carman, Mache and Yaiza, arrives at the national park. Here you will transfer to one of the national park’s coaches for a drive around the edges and slopes of the volcanoes. The restaurant provides a 360-degree panorama across the surrounding rugged landscape. Enjoy a volcano BBQ, cooked by the heat contained just below the surface, accompanied by red or white wine, soft drinks, beer or water, followed by ‘Bienmesable’ – a traditional Lanzarote dessert.
Afterwards, travel south for a view across the geologically fascinating El Golfo and Los Hervideros, boasting caves and craters created by the flow of lava. See Janubio, where vegetables are grown in fields of lava pellets before arriving at one of La Geria’s wine cellars to taste some of the local Malvasia wine. Return to the ship, now perhaps truly understanding how intriguing Lanzarote’s geological landscape is.

Once at the national park, begin a tour of the craters and lava beds in this lunar-like terrain. At Islote de Hilario, enjoy a demonstration of the latent power of the volcano, as wood is ignited and steam produced by using the heat just below the surface.
Afterwards travel through the Salt Planes to La Geria, where vineyards dot the landscape. Here, the wines are protected by semi-circular stonewalls, making them look more like art than argriculture. This guided walk will follow the course of The Levadas for over three miles, allowing you to admire the verdant plants, mountain views and green farmland that cover Madeira. You will first be driven to Vale Paraiso, where you set off for your two-hour walk. Lisbon Vintage Tram and Port Wine
Walking difficulty: Easy Activity
If you want to take in the sights and absorb the atmosphere of Lisbon at a relaxed pace, finishing with a taste of the local tipple, then this tour is for you. Lisbon’s vintage trams are among the city’s icons, and this tour includes a ride on one of these historical vehicles.
A coach will take you into the heart of the city where you will board a traditional wooden-bodied tram for a scenic one-hour journey through Alfama and Bairro Alto, two of the oldest districts of the city which are characterised by winding alleyways and whitewashed houses with flowers on their balconies. Following your tram journey, you will visit a local establishment and be served a glass of white port accompanied by white chocolate; you can then enjoy a glass of ten-year-old Tawny port with a miniature ‘Pastel de Nata’ cake.
The tour would not be complete without a panoramic coach ride through the city, viewing some of Lisbon’s famous landmarks such as the Monument to the Discoveries, Belém Tower, Jerónimos Monastery, the far end of the Edward VII Park, the Rossio district and St George’s Castle.
Additional Information
The trams are authentic historical vehicles and are accessed by a steep flight of three steps. There is no commentary during the tram ride, but your guide will describe the journey before you board. The trams are exclusive to Saga passengers. You will need to walk at least 250 yards from the tram to the port tasting venue.
Lisbon Tuk Tuk Tour (sharing)
Walking difficulty: Easy Activity
Within the depths of Lisbon’s old quarters, narrow cobbled streets weave their way past cafes and bars, leading to several landmarks which you’ll see during this tour. The areas are often inaccessible to cars and buses, however, there is one mode of transport that is well-equipped for this sightseeing exploration – the ‘tuk tuk’.
Climb aboard your miniature tour vehicle, accompanied by your driver guide. Pass through Bairro Alta and the district known as Alfama before arriving at the Nossa Senhora do Monte viewpoint. Near St George’s Castle, it offers a sweeping view of the city below. The tour continues through the city’s steep and narrow, historic streets.
There is a brief stop at Chiado in the centre of Lisbon, an elegant and bohemian neighbourhood, between Bairro Alto and Baixa Pombalina. It is frequently compared to Paris’ Montmartre district, rebuilt after it was destroyed by fire in 1998. The most famous streets are Rua do Carmo, which houses the ruins of a church by the same name and Rua Garrett, in the centre of Chiado. See the square and its surrounding streets, packed with cafes, theatres and museums. Then, enjoy a traditional snack of marmalade and cheese paired with a glass of port before returning to the ship.
Additional Information
The Tuk Tuks seat four guests, therefore if you book this excursion you will be sharing the Tuk Tuk with three other guests. If you would prefer to have the Tuk Tuk for just two guests please book the alternative Lisbon Tuk Tuk tour (two guests). Please consider taking an additional layer of clothing as elements of the ride may be colder than expected. The step up into the vehicle may be steep. The Tuk Tuks are small vehicles with compact seating and the ride can be bumpy. This tour is unsuitable for guests with walkers.
