Tromso

8th March, 2023

Our arrival in Tromso was spectacular, and the weather was just perfect. Sunny with light winds. A beautiful scenery of clear white mountains and crystal clear blue sea. The perfect combination. As the Pilot said to me: you are very lucky! This is the best weather we have had so far this year.

As we were approaching the dock I saw on the other side of the bay, up in the mountains, a ski resort. I asked the Pilot if it’s open today, and before I could finish my question, I could see Chief Officer Andrew, and our Deck Cadet Jack, smiling and sharing the same mental picture of us going there. Once the Pilot confirmed it was open, we knew where we would be spending our day in port. Our Operations Director, James Langley, was scheduled to leave the ship in the afternoon that day, however as soon as I mentioned my plans to him he immediately said “let’s go”.

We took a taxi, which drove us through the underwater tunnel to the other side, and within 15 min we were at the ski resort. Once we arrived at the counter for renting ski equipment for a couple of hours of skiing, we just said: we need everything! Within 10 minutes we were all geared up and ready to go. What a great feeling it is to ski and look at the sea and our ship on the other side of the bay. Priceless. We enjoyed it so much that it is actually difficult to describe. It was a bit cold, -14 ˚C however it didn’t bother us much. The sun was shining and we were filled with joy. I will remember this day for the rest of my life. What an experience.

Our taxi driver was waiting for us as we agreed, and we returned to the ship, as it was James’ time to leave. He left with a big smile on his face…safe travels James!

The Pilot on departure was the same as the one on arrival, so he was really happy to learn that we went skiing and that we loved it. He lives in Tromso, so for him seeing us so happy in his town was quite satisfying. Furthermore, he was happy that he would be staying with us until our next port, Alta. He was very impressed with our Bridge team and professionalism. Nice to hear that as a Captain.

Tromso, thank you for being so kind to us, hope to see you again soon...

Kind Regards
Captain Krešo Volarić
