Mainz walking tour

This guided tour focuses on the city’s history, with visits to its early settlements, Roman era cathedral, old town and modern city centre. The old centre of Mainz features a medieval cathedral, the Electoral Palace, beautiful squares and patrician town houses that line narrow cobblestone lanes. Some of the city’s more modern landmarks include the City Hall, which was designed by Danish architect Arne Jacobsen and built in 1971, and the Am Brand Shopping centre, the Rheingoldhalle conference centre and Fort Malakoff. The city’s centre, which extends from the Kaisertor in the north along the Kaiserstrasse and from the main railway station to the citadel in the south, is the oldest part of the city and dates back to Roman times. The settlement was known as Mogontiacum or Aurea Moguntia, and features reminders of when the city was the capital of the Roman Imperial province of Germania Superior.
