Admire the riverscapes of the Rhine in spring

Enjoy the springtime scenery of the Rhine as the surrounding landscape begins to blossom. Embark your ship in Arnhem before cruising into Germany to see the historic landmarks of Cologne on an included tour.

Continue into the scenic Middle Rhine to visit Koblenz and the wine town of Rüdesheim before arriving in Mannheim. From here you can venture into Heidelberg and tour the ruins of the Renaissance castle during an included excursion.

Day 1 UK to Arnhem

Travel to Arnhem (a journey from Calais of approximately four and a half hours, plus lunch and comfort stops), arriving late this afternoon to embark Spirit of the Danube.

Day 2 Arnhem 🎧

Spend the morning exploring independently or instead join an optional tour to see famous sights associated with Operation Market Garden, a battle fought in 1944 and the subject of the epic war film A Bridge too Far.

Depart Arnhem early this afternoon and continue cruising overnight.

Day 3 Cologne 🎧

Cathedral and St Martin Church, Cologne

Wake up in Cologne, Germany's cultural capital. Enjoy a morning of independent exploring – don't miss the vast Gothic cathedral, started in 1248 to house the relics of the three Magi but not finally completed until 1880! It houses a shrine to Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar – now among the patron saints of Cologne – behind the high altar.

This afternoon you can explore further on an included sightseeing coach tour of the city, before setting off on a guided walking tour of the cobbled lanes and lively squares, such as the Alter Markt.

Spirit of the Danube will begin the overnight journey towards Koblenz just before midnight.

Day 4 Koblenz to Rüdesheim 🎧

Ehrenbreitstein Fortress and Koblenz City in Germany

Meaning 'merging of the rivers', Koblenz' rich history is reflected in a wealth of monuments and historic buildings. Arrive here before breakfast.

An optional walking tour this morning encompasses Ehrenbreitstein Fortress.

Set sail after lunch and cruise through the photogenic scenery of the Middle Rhine this afternoon, passing the steep Lorelei to arrive in Rüdesheim this evening.

Relish the opportunity to sample the local wine during an optional wine tasting excursion this evening.

Day 5 Rüdesheim to Mannheim 🎧

Day 6 Mannheim to Mainz 🎧

This morning you can join an included visit to the home of Germany's oldest university, the city of Heidelberg. Highlights include the Old Bridge across the River Neckar and the ruined castle high above the city.

Its rather random appearance is due to it having been added to through different periods of German architectural styles. Virtually destroyed by lightning in 1764 it was cannibalised by locals who used stones from it in their own houses!

Rejoin the ship this afternoon and continue to Mainz, birthplace of Johannes Gutenberg, inventor of the 'moveable type' printing press.

Spirit of the Danube will moor here overnight.

Day 7 Mainz to Boppard 🎧

The Rhine at Boppard

Depart mid morning from Mainz to arrive in Boppard this afternoon.

The cobbled streets of Boppard feature extensive Roman remains, medieval fortifications and half-timbered buildings.

Day 8 Boppard to Cochem 🎧

Cochem Castle overlooks historic Cochem town on the Moselle River

Sail from Boppard early this morning to arrive in Cochem on the Moselle early this afternoon.

You may like to explore the town independently or by joining an optional trip aboard the tourist train, while another optional afternoon excursion visits Reichsburg Castle, followed by a wine tasting at a vineyard.

Depart this evening for Bonn.

Afterwards, cruise the canals to the city centre with its historic bridges and gabled houses and view the famous Skinny Bridge, the Montelbaanstoren tower and the Jewish Quarter.
