Join Spirit of the Rhine for a 7-night river cruise along the Rhine and Moselle. Your holiday begins in Arnhem where you will embark your ship before cruising into Germany to visit the former capital, Bonn – birthplace of Beethoven. You will sail into the Moselle where you can look forward to exploring the pretty wine town of Cochem and seeing the Renaissance architecture of Bernkastel and historic Trier, Germany’s oldest city, which you will see on an included tour. Indulge in an included wine tasting in Traben-Trarbach and perhaps join an optional excursion to the imposing Ehrenbreitstein Fortress while moored in Koblenz. Disembark in Frankfurt for your journey home.

Day 1 UK to Amsterdam to Arnhem

Arnhem, the Netherlands

Fly to Amsterdam and transfer to Arnhem (a journey of approximately one and a half hours) to embark Spirit of the Rhine and enjoy a welcome reception and dinner on board.

Cruise overnight towards Bonn.

Day 2 Bonn 🎧

Bonn, Germany

Arrive in Bonn after lunch and discover the highlights of the city on an included walking tour with a local guide. Highlights include the Beethoven monument, the Romanesque Minster Cathedral, the University of Bonn which was formerly the Elector’s Palace and the Baroque City Hall.

After dinner you will sail overnight towards Cochem.

Day 3 Cochem 🎧

The city and the castle Cochem, Germany

Arrive in romantic Cochem on the Moselle after breakfast. You might like to explore the town independently this morning, while an optional afternoon excursion visits the castle, followed by a wine tasting at a vineyard.

Depart this evening for Bernkastel.

Day 4 Bernkastel 🎧

Bernkastel-Kues, Germany

Sail to Bernkastel-Kues where Renaissance houses line the market square. Perhaps embark on an optional trip aboard the Bernkastel panorama train.

Day 5 Bernkastel to Trier 🎧

Set sail before breakfast and spend the afternoon in Germany’s oldest city, Trier, founded in 16BC by Emperor Augustus. Discover more on an included tour to see the Roman city gateway, Porta Nigra, and the cathedral.

Day 6 Trier to Traben-Trarbach

Traben-Trarbach, alongside the Moselle, Germany

Set off in the early hours and cruise through the morning to the twin villages of Traben-Trarbach which straddle the Moselle. Known as the 'capitals' of the wine region, they are home to many art nouveau buildings.

Enjoy an included wine-tasting at a vineyard this afternoon before your cruise resumes over dinner as you sail overnight to Koblenz.

Day 7 Koblenz 🎧

Jesuiten Square in Koblenz, Germany

Meaning 'merging of the rivers', Koblenz' rich history is reflected in a wealth of monuments and historic buildings. Arrive here after breakfast. An optional walking tour this afternoon encompasses Ehrenbreitstein Fortress.

Set sail before dinner and cruise overnight towards Frankfurt.

Day 8 Frankfurt to UK

Disembark Spirit of the Rhine after breakfast for your return journey to the UK.

Cochem, Reichsburg Castle and Wine tasting

Visit fairy-tale Reichsburg Castle to learn about its colourful history and see magnificent views of the Moselle. Enjoy a guided tour of the castle, which was rescued and restored in the 19th century in neo-Gothic style. Today it is a fabulous showcase for Renaissance and baroque furniture. Later head to a local vineyard and winery for an introductory talk, and a tasting of four regional white Rieslings. There'll be the chance to purchase some wine before returning to the ship.

Bernkastel panorama train

Relax on board the Bernkastel panorama train as it passes sights such as the wine museum, St Nikolaus Hospital, the parish church of St Michael and the historic market square with its centuries-old half-timbered houses.

Koblenz and Ehrenbreitstein Fortress

Immortalised by Byron and Herman Melville, lofty fortifications have glowered over Koblenz since 1,000AD and changed faces over the centuries. The Prussians constructed Festung Ehrenbreitstein in the early 19th century, when Rhineland became a Prussian province. Despite being Europe’s second largest fortress, after Gibraltar, it played no part in either WWI or WWII. Enjoy a panoramic cable car ride from Koblenz up to the fortress, the views are astounding and you’ll learn about the history of the site. There will be a guided walk around the historic city of Koblenz, and you can admire the elegant architecture.

1 – Walking at your own discretion. For example, on panoramic coach tours when the only walking is at photo stops.
2 – Minimal walking. Up to approximately 1,640 feet (500 metres) on mainly flat terrain.
3 – Moderate walking. Between 1,640-4,920 feet (500-1500 metres) over mixed terrain with the possibility of some steps.
4 – Considerable walking. More than 4,920 feet (1500 metres) over uneven terrain with many steps.
5 – Strenuous walking. Long distances over rough terrain with climbing, steps and trekking.
