Celebrate Christmas and the New Year amid the beautiful wintery scenery of the Rhine and Moselle, stepping ashore to visit ancient castles, charming towns and quaint villages in the throes of celebrations. Enjoy mulled wine, a festive atmosphere and traditional Christmas dinner with all the trimmings on board Spirit of the Rhine. Included excursions reveal Heidelberg and its castle, the medieval quarter of Strasbourg, the Black Forest, Koblenz and Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, and historic Düsseldorf.

Depart Düsseldorf, 2200.
Travel to Düsseldorf and embark Spirit of the Rhine. Enjoy dinner on board and cruise overnight towards Bonn.

Arrive Bonn, 0800. Depart 1700.
Arrive Andernach, 2300.
Bonn was capital of West Germany from 1949 until 1999, when Berlin was restored as capital of the reunified country. The sights of this compact city, birthplace of famous composer Beethoven, include the Beethoven monument, Romanesque Minster Cathedral and the University of Bonn.

Depart Andernach, 1300.
Scenic Cruise, Middle Rhine Gorge
From Andernach, an attractive town with medieval fortifications, an optional excursion visits Winningen for a wine tasting.
Spend a relaxing afternoon on board as your ship glides through the scenic Middle Rhine Gorge, past a forested landscapes dotted with ancient castle ruins.

Arrive Mainz, 0800. Depart 1400.
Arrive Mannheim, 2100.
Mainz is known for its medieval market square, half-timbered houses, Romanesque sandstone cathedral and St Stephen’s church, which features stained glass windows by artist Marc Chagall. Behind the cathedral in Gutenbergplatz square is a statue of the father of modern printing Johannes Gutenberg, who was born in Mainz in the 14th century.
Continue along the Rhine this afternoon towards Mannheim.

Arrive Speyer, 1700.
This morning an included excursion visits the home of Germany's oldest university, the city of Heidelberg. Highlights include the Old Bridge across the River Neckar and the ruined castle high above the city.
Its rather random appearance is due to it having been added to through different periods of German architectural styles. Virtually destroyed by lightning in 1764 it was ransacked by locals who used stones from it in their own houses!
Following your excursion you re-board Spirit of the Rhine and spend the afternoon cruising to Speyer.

Arrive Breisach, 2200.
Spend Christmas morning at leisure, you may like to go ashore for a stroll before spending a relaxing afternoon cruising the Rhine and enjoying the festive atmosphere on board your ship as you tuck in to Christmas Dinner.

Arrive Basel, 2200.
Breisach was an important medieval town of the Holy Roman Empire during the 16th century. It's overlooked by a 12th-century cathedral – St Stephansmünster – set high on a hilltop above. Enjoy the mountain scenery on an included excursion into the Black Forest this morning.
Your ship sails from Breisach after lunch and continues into Switzerland.

Depart 1800.
Basel is located at the meeting point of Switzerland, Germany and France. The oldest part of the city is located near the banks of the Rhine river, and is where you’ll find the cathedral. Other places of interest are the 16th-century Market Square and the late medieval Town Hall.

Arrive 0900. Depart 1300.
Kehl is located on the banks of the Rhine river, directly opposite the French city of Strasbourg. The capital of Alsace, Strasbourg, features cobbled streets, medieval architecture and a Gothic cathedral with an astronomical clock.

Arrive 1300. Depart 2200.
The waterfront of this classic Rhineland wine town is overlooked by wooded gorges and vineyards. There are extensive Roman remains, medieval fortifications and half-timbered buildings and you can explore further during an optional walking tour.

Arrive Cochem, 0800. Depart 1300.
Arrive Koblenz, 1900.
This small town enjoys a scenic setting beside the Moselle river. Perched high above the town and crowning a hill covered in vines stands the neo-Gothic Reichsburg Castle, and although most of the castle was rebuilt in the 19th century, the original 11th-century keep still survives.
The town’s other historic architectural gems include a baroque Town Hall backed by a maze of streets and a quaint market square.

Koblenz, meaning 'merging of the rivers', is situated on the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers. At the exact point where the two rivers meet, the Deutsches Eck, there is a monument with a huge equestrian statue of Emperor Wilhelm I.
Above the town sits the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, a citadel built by the Prussians between 1816 and 1832. Enjoy an included walking tour of Koblenz and look forward to New Year celebrations on board Spirit of the Rhine this evening.

Arrive Düsseldorf, 1900.
Spend a relaxing day on board Spirit of the Rhine, enjoying the passing scenery and on-board facilities.

Düsseldorf is famed for its Old Town. The narrow backstreets are home to the Gothic St Lambertus church with its twisted tower and the Burgplatz (square) features a Schlossturm (palace tower).
Nearby, the Rhine embankment promenade offers a sweeping view of Düsseldorf's skyline and the Oberkassel Rhine banks.
