Kristiansund is situated on Norway’s north west coast and spread across three islands connected by bridges. A large percentage of the city was rebuilt during the second half of the twentieth century and it is noted for its modern architecture. One earlier survivor is the city’s Opera house where regular performances take place. Explore the city, perhaps visiting the Klippfish museum dedicated to the dry salted cod locally produced and which was at one time an important industry in the area. There’s also a chance to visit Grip island with its abandoned villages and 15th century Stave Church.

Torghatten Mountain

Cruise past the island village of Rorvik before heading along the shores of Toget Island, home to Torghatten Mountain famous for the ‘hole’ at its centre. Later today, cruise past the Seven Sisters mountain range overlooking a multitude of islands before crossing the Arctic Circle and into the ‘land of the midnight sun’.

This morning look forward to cruising the spectacular Trollfjord, passing towering mountains and cliffs as you head into its heart, watching for the Sea Eagles that make their home here. From here sail the Raftsundet Strait as you pass a narrow canyon and the impressive Raftsundet Alps, before arriving at Sortland – the largest town in the Vesteralen archipelago. Its distinctive blue-painted buildings have earnt it the nickname ‘Blue Town’ after the artist Bjorn Elvenes proposed it should become a ‘living 3D painting’! Explore the town or perhaps take the chance to discover the surrounding countryside.

Explore Tromsø, the ‘Gateway to the Arctic’ on an overnight stay in the port. With its famous Arctic Cathedral, museums such as the Perspektivet Museum, galleries, and attractions including the Arctic aquarium there’s plenty to discover here. Perhaps take the cable car up Storsteinen Mountain, or just enjoy strolling through this multi-cultural city famous as a viewing point for the Northern Lights during the winter months.

Inside the Arctic Circle, the town of Leknes looks out over the magical Lofoten Islands, with their rich Viking heritage and arctic wildlife, set amidst a wild and beautiful backdrop of mountains and countryside. There a chance to learn more about the Vikings with a visit to the village of Borg and its ‘living history’ Viking Museum. Buildings here include a 272-foot long Viking house based on an original found nearby, providing an opportunity to step back in time into the world of these fascinating people. Later today cruise by Reine on the island of Moskenesoya in the Lofoten Archipelago, with its stunning scenery.

Lerwick is the capital of the Shetland Islands, which in turn comprise some 100 islands and islets. Shetland has a rich Viking heritage with a distinct dialect and culture, the windswept archipelago providing a haven for birds. Around a third of the population of Shetland live in Lerwick which is home to the Shetland Museum with exhibits relating to geology, local industry and history, archaeology and more. Perhaps enjoy browsing the shops in Commerical Street or visit the Bod of Gremista – an 18th century fishing station which has been restored and now houses the Shetland Textile Working Museum.
