Make a stop at the peaceful village of Eidfjord, one of the most beautiful highlights of the fjords and gateway to the Hardangervidda Nature Centre and the Voringfossen Waterfall. Surrounded by soaring mountains it comprises lush gardens and fields, clusters of traditional clapboard homes in an array of cheerful colours and two churches, one of which can be dated back to 1309. Perhaps hop on the little train which trundles through town and discover pockets of Eidfjord that you may not have otherwise known were there.

Narrow streets climbing away from the waterfront, are lined by interesting shops, colourful half-timbered houses and cobbled stairways. Perhaps take the funicular to the peak of Mount Fløyen for panoramic views of the city and beyond, explore the fish market or seek out the museum relating to the Norwegian composer, Grieg.
