Springtime in the Mediterranean

You start the tour by heading towards the airfield runway to reach the British/Spanish Frontier. Proceed towards the southernmost point of Gibraltar, Europa Point and the sight of the only Trinity Lighthouse outside Great Britain.

Here, alight from your transport to take some photographs of the views of the busiest shipping lane in the world, the mingling of the Mediterranean Sea, Atlantic Ocean and two Continents. We then head to the Rock of Gibraltar.

Drive down to Princess Caroline’s Battery and enjoy the impressive scenery from the Nature Reserve, the Bay and the Spanish Mainland along with a wide selection of Mediterranean flora and fauna along the way. Then travel via the Upper Rock area- passing by the Moorish Castle and the Tower of Homage that still bears the scars of battle.

See some of Barcelona’s sights from the comfort of your tour vehicle during this introduction to the city, with two photo stops at Paseo Lluis Company and Montjuic hill. Your tour begins by heading to Poblenou, a neighbourhood that has experienced substantial industrial growth.

On route you will pass by the Colon Statue, Barceloneta beach and Ciudadella Parc. From here, you will arrive at the city centre before continuing towards the Art Nouveau San Pau Hospital. This tour will give you a great impression of the city of Valencia, the third largest city in Spain after Madrid and Barcelona. Capture the sights of the city by coach and enjoy two photo stops.

The tour begins by coach passing by the Mestalla stadium (Valencia football stadium), before driving through the city centre. Admire one of the twelve gates that formed part of the ancient city wall, Serrano Towers and Pass by Valencia Bullring.

Reboard your coach and continue your snapshot drive, passing by Playa Malvarrosa, Valencia’s popular beach. Before returning to the port, we will pass by Veles e Vents building, an iconic piece of modern architecture renowned for its striking design.

This scenic tour starts by leaving the city behind to first enjoy striking panoramic views from the Mirador Sa Foradada, where you can enjoy a photo stop. Then you’ll head through pine forest landscapes, and almond and olive groves until you arrive in the Spanish village of Valldemossa. Here, you can choose an optional 30-minute walking tour, or alternatively enjoy free time to explore one of Majorca’s most beautiful villages and enjoy more magnificent vistas over the valley. With mountain backdrops dressed in blankets of greenery and the famous Royal Charterhouse of Valldemossa, you’ll see why this is such a highly loved destination within the Balearic Islands. Finally, a drive up to Bellver Castle will give you the chance to photograph the sweeping views overlooking Palma and its glistening seafront. Before returning to your ship, you can also gain insight into the importance of its Gothic architectural style.

Additional Information

The distance from the coach parking to Valldemossa is 350 yards. If you choose to explore independently in Valldemossa, you will have approximately one hour at leisure. If you choose to join the guide for a 30-minute walking tour, expect to cover a distance of 1100 yards, additional walking during the 30 minutes of free time is at your discretion. The village does have some steep inclines and cobblestone streets.

Discover the city of Lisbon on this panoramic sightseeing tour, with two photo stops.

Leaving the port, drive past the Jerónimos Monastery, built using limestone over a period of 100 years starting in 1501; UNESCO-listed Belém Tower, constructed with the primary objective of protecting the bay; the Monument to the Discoveries; the pink façade of Belém Palace, the official residence of the Portuguese president; the new Coach Museum; Avenida da Liberdade, the most central avenue in Lisbon and a popular shopping district for both tourists and locals; and Edward VII park.

You will also cross the 25th April suspension bridge over the Tagus River to see the imposing statue of Christ the Redeemer. Stretching across the estuary to the Tagus River in Lisbon the suspension bridge is considered as a twin sister of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco because of its similar design. The bridge is an impressive sight, and it also offers a breathtaking view when crossing it.

Visible from most parts of Lisbon and beyond, the statue of Christ the Redeemer (Cristo Rei) stands a striking 270 feet high on its angular pedestal, overlooking the south bank of the Tagus River. One of Portugal’s most iconic landmarks standing tall with its robed arms outstretched, it was erected in 1959 and modelled on the famous Cristo Redentor in Rio de Janeiro.

Then, enjoy your scenic drive back to the port.

Stroll around the Alameda Gardens before capturing views of The Gibraltar Rock on a scenic cable car ride. This tour will also take you to delight in the collection of plants at Alameda Gardens, which are an important conservation project.

First, join your guide who will point out the various plants, sights and wildlife whilst also describing its rich history as you wander around the grounds. Gibraltar’s cable car is the territory’s only purpose-built tourist attraction, and you then have the chance to ride up to the very top of the Rock.

Enjoy free time to wander around the many terraces and capture the views of the city of Gibraltar to the west and the coastline of Africa to the south. After your tour, a shuttle service will take you straight back to the ship, or you may prefer to be dropped off in the Irish town pedestrian area to explore the many shops.

Alternatively, relax in a pub or cafe, before making your own way back to the ship.

There is approximately one mile of walking. This excursion operates by mini-bus, cable car and on foot. The ground at the gardens is generally paved with steps and some steep gradients. Please expect queues and crowds at the cable car and be aware that the cable car may not operate during harsh weather conditions which can also affect the views you will see. Passengers are reminded that Gibraltar’s apes may be encountered on this excursion and should not be touched or fed as they may bite. Dependent on the time of year when visiting the Alameda Gardens, different plants will be flowering.

Learn about Gibraltar's unique wartime history on this tour. Begin by travelling past the British/Spanish Land Frontier. Your first stop is Europa Point, site of the only Trinity Lighthouse outside Britain, where you can savour dramatic views of the Atlantic merging with the Mediterranean.

This tour involves walking of up to approximately three-quarters-of-a-mile lasting around 45 minutes with a steep incline of 450 yards on the way out of the tunnels. There are some low ceilings in the tunnels.

Go in search of dolphins and other marine life on this aquatic-creature based boat trip. Gibraltar’s bay boasts three species of dolphin and seven species of whale, as well as sunfish, flying fish and turtles. After departing from your ship, take the short drive to the ‘Dolphin World’ pleasure cruiser.

Then, after setting off into the bay, learn about the history of this tiny colony, and you will be given an insight into the marine life of the bay with a running commentary from your guide.

After landing, return transport will be available back to the ship, or if there’s enough time, you can choose to walk into town for shopping and a little independent exploration.

We recommend that you take some warm clothing for the boat ride. This excursion involves up to 280 yards of walking to reach the vessel and a couple of steps to board the vessel unassisted. Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed, and refreshments can be purchased on board if you wish. The boat is not exclusive to saga guests.

From the quayside, travel north towards Gibraltar’s unique airport runway to the border between this small British Overseas territory and Spain. Proceed along the outskirts of town, passing the American War Memorial and The Trafalgar Cemetery to arrive at Europa Point.

After a panoramic tour, you will be dropped off in front of the Bristol Hotel in Main Street, where you will be greeted by the Distillery Manager who will walk you to the venue. The tour begins with a brief history of the Art of Distilling, plus an insight into gin production before a comprehensive timeline of gin’s chequered past. Enjoy a gin tasting experience, before returning to the port.

The drive continues towards Fornells Beach where you will pause for a short photo stop. The final stop will be Monte Toro, the island’s spiritual centre. At the summit of this hill is the Sanctuary of the Mother of God of Toro, run by a Franciscan community of nuns.

At the top, there is a statue of Jesus of the Sacred Heart, whose pedestal is dedicated to those Menorcans who died during the Moroccan war. Return to the port, following a photo stop at the top of Mount Toro.

Disembark your ship to start your walking tour of Mahon accompanied by a local guide. En route, you will pass by the local market, bustling every morning in the heart of the city centre.

Continuing your stroll, your guide will introduce you to the history of the island and delve deeper into the influences of different cultures that have joined the population here.

Next, you’ll pause outside the Santa Maria Church to admire the exterior pillars and side chapels before stopping by Teatro Principal De Mao – built in 1829, titled Spain’s oldest opera house.

After your visit, it’s time to head back to the ship by foot with your guide, taking in the passing sights one last time.

Visit the port town of Ciutadella and megalithic chamber tomb, Naveta des Tudons.

Leaving the ship, board your coach and travel to your first stop, Naveta des Tudons. This megalithic burial chamber was used between 200 and 750 BC, and you will have the opportunity to learn about the tomb's history during your visit.

After taking some photographs, your tour continues to Ciutadella, the old capital of the island. Best explored on foot, on arrival begin a guided walking tour of the city, which will pass the cathedral, which was built on the foundations of the High Mosque that existed in Ciutadella during the Arab rule.

After your walking tour you return to the port by coach.

Enjoy a short drive to the Arenal d’en Castell, which boasts an expansive view over the Arenal and Addaia Fortress. This quaint Spanish island is also home to the Caribbean-like Cala Tirant – a surf beach set on the northernmost point of Minorca, which you’ll be able to see from a distance during your tour.

Continuing to the fishing village of Fornells, you can take in some more blue landscapes with the surrounding bay before heading to the key highlight of your tour: Binissues. Home to a farm and museum manor, tradition and history intertwine in a rural environment, giving you the most authentic experience of Minorca.

During your visit, you can see a traditional working farm in action, alongside the stately home with richly decorated rooms. Also, explore a peasant farmer’s house and an old straw loft housing relics of the peasant past, revealing what daily life was like over a hundred years ago. While here, you will also find out about Minorca’s most popular cocktail drink, Pomada, first made for the British Sailors who were stationed on the island for over a century.

At the end of your visit, sample some of the local products as you are shown how this simple, yet refreshing drink is prepared. It will be served in a “porrón”, a little bottle which will be shared outside on the pastoral grounds. Before returning to the port, there will be a stop at Monte Toro, the highest spot on the island, providing you with a few panoramic photo opportunities.

Make the short drive from the pier to the lagoons of S´Albufera, a site of outstanding natural beauty. Now a protected natural park, the area was once threatened by the possibility of a private housing development that would have seriously damaged the lagoon and the local ecosystem if not stopped. Learn how the local administration is restoring the environment through the plantation of autochthonous vegetation.

Take in the natural beauty while walking along the Camí de Cavalls, a historic trail along the island’s coastline, originally constructed for military purposes during the French rule. As time passed, some sections of the route were gradually lost to urban growth and erosion, but these are being restored to allow both locals and visitors to use the trail and enjoy the natural environment. See the historic defence tower Torre Des Rambles, built by the British on top of a craggy cliff. Enjoy the amazing view over the island Illa d’en Colom along the walk back to Es Grau beach.

After your hike, return to the ship by coach.

Depart the pier and head towards Pals. The drive will take you through the province of Girona, passing through towns such as La Bisbal, capital of Baix Empordà, where you can see buildings constructed at the height of modernism, before continuing the drive to pass by Peratallada.

Peratallada is one of the most important villages in Catalonia in terms of medieval architecture and in 2017, it was declared a Cultural Asset of National Interest by the Catalan Ministry of Culture.

Next, you will arrive at the medieval town of Pals. Located on the top of a hill, Pals consists of narrow cobblestone streets, stone houses and a medieval Romanesque tower built between the 11th and 13th centuries, known as the Torre de les Hores (Tower of the Hours). On arrival you will have 45 minutes of free time to explore independently before the return drive to your ship.

Additional Information

Although walking during your free time in Pals is at your discretion, we have graded this tour moderate due to the terrain in the village. All streets are cobbled with steep inclines, therefore this tour is not suitable for those with limited mobility.

Girona is a compact city in Spain’s northeastern Catalonia region known for its medieval architecture and walled old quarter. Your tour begins with a one-hour transfer to the city of Girona. During your time here, delve into the city’s rich heritage with a visit to the 17th-century cathedral, enjoy a guided walk in the medieval Jewish Quarter and walk down the Ramblas. There will also be the opportunity for time at leisure to explore independently before returning to the ship.

There is up to two miles of essential walking and 90 steps, therefore this tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility. You should dress conservatively when visiting religious sites – shoulders and knees should be covered, and we recommend that you wear flat walking shoes. The journey from the ship to/from Girona will take approximately one hour. You will have one hour of free time. You can request a packed lunch from the ship to take with you on this tour.

Leaving the port of Palamos, travel by coach to Pals, a medieval town. The town boasts a cobblestoned old quarter and is home to the iconic Tower of the Hours, a Romanesque structure built between the 11th and 13th century. Explore the Gothic Quarter with your guide, enjoying a walk along the cobbled streets with its arches, pointed windows and stone balconies.

After exploring the city with your guide, enjoy some time at leisure before boarding the local train to learn about the process of rice production, from planting to harvesting. During the journey, you’ll pass by the marshlands and rice fields of Pals with the Montgri mountain in the background.

Your train stops at the historic el Moli de Pals, where rice has been milled and processed since the 15th century. Discover more about the processing of rice during a visit to the mill before returning to Palamos by coach.

Salvador Dalí is widely recognised for the intriguing and unconventional imagery displayed in his surrealist art. The Castle Museum, nestled in Pubol, served as the official residence of his wife, Gala. Originally constructed in the 14th century during the height of affluence in the Pubol Barony, this three-story building was acquired by Dalí in 1970 as a promise to Gala that he would buy her a palace. It became exclusively her abode, with Dalí only permitted to visit by invitation.

Upon acquisition, the castle was restored – reflecting Dalí's distinctive style; many imperfections were creatively transformed into unusual, open spaces. Additionally, sculpture, artwork, and busts were added to the grounds and gardens. Today, the castle preserves numerous items of clothing, furniture, ornaments, and artwork from its former occupants.

Accompanied by your guide, immerse yourself in this unique tribute to the master.

Following your visit, a short drive will bring you to Mas Oller, a local vineyard, where you can sample Catalán wine and refreshments. After you will return to Palamos by coach.

Your tour continues to Empuries, a Roman city that dates back to 550 BC. The name Empuries derives from emporium, signifying a marketplace or commercial hub, which accurately describes its historical role. It was strategically located near the delta of the River Fluvia and multiple trade routes, making it a crucial commercial port in the Mediterranean.

During your visit you will have the opportunity to marvel at examples of Greek and Roman town buildings and their unique features. Explore the market, agora and holy areas, including the temple of Jupiter. Admire the ingenuity of the Greeks as they adapted buildings to the terrain, contrasting with the Roman’s preferred grid-like city patterns and layouts.

Enjoy this short introductory tour of Toulon by coach, with a short photo stop at Tour Royale.

Begin your tour with a drive through Le Mourillon district where you can capture the inner bay, which was the first military harbour in France, and see the boats berthed in front of the old town. Here, you can also enjoy the view across the ring of mountains that surround the bay – including the well-known Mont Faron.

See some of the area's golden sandy beaches and drive along the emblematic coastal road of Toulon: the Corniche Marius Escartefigue. Named after a pre-war politician, this road runs along the southern slopes of Mont Faron and offers a view of the bay. From your coach, look out for the Place de la Liberté, the Opera House and other buildings built in the grand style made fashionable by Baron Haussmann, who went on to create the Grands Boulevards in Paris. There will be a photo stop at the Tour Royale, a huge circular tower built in the 16th century to defend the harbour.

After your drive you will return to the port.

Visit Bandol, a coastal town and wine growing region located west of Toulon, enjoy some free time here before visiting Domaine de la Frégate.

The tour begins with a 45-minute drive to Bandol. A typical French Riverian town lined with palm trees and homes painted in the pastel shades of Provence. On arrival you will have some free time to explore the local area at leisure. Perhaps relax and watch the world go by in a cafe or stroll along the harbour.

Next, the tour continues to the Domaine de la Frégate – a family-run winery where grapes have been cultivated since 1882. Row-upon-row of vines are overlooked by limestone ridges and the area enjoys over 2,000 hours of sunlight per year: it is a wonderfully picturesque place. Enjoy a tour of the estate, learn the wine-making techniques and enjoy a formal tasting of the wine and local olive oil produced here.

Afterwards, return to the ship with a taste for the unique Bandol wine.

Head to this little seaside resort nestled at the foot of the Cape Canaille cliffs. A former Roman trading post, admire Cassis’ quays lined by cafes and restaurants, jagged coves, natural beaches and its old town.

First, depart from the pier and travel by bus to Cassis. On arrival join a small boat to cruise among the Massif des Calanques, the steep-walled inlets and bays of the Calanques National Park. This network of canyon-like inlets is one of the geological marvels of southern France. Beneath the surface of these towering rock formations lie caves once inhabited by Neolithic man, now accessible only to divers.

After your 45-minute boat trip, you have some free time to explore the Provençal port of Cassis, before returning by coach to Toulon

You will need to walk approximately 550 yards each way from where the coach parking area to the boat, which will be over uneven and cobblestone ground. Walking during free time is at your discretion. A certain amount of dexterity is required when boarding and disembarking the boats, which you will need to be able to do unaided. The boat trip may be cancelled at short notice in the event of adverse weather conditions. The coach journey to/from Cassis will take approximately one hour. The boat will be exclusive to Saga guests. The itinerary may operate in reverse, with free time first.

Depart from the pier and head to Marseille, France's second largest city after Paris. On arrival in Marseilles, follow your guide on a short orientation walking tour. Old Port (Le Vieux Port) is the heart of the city, lined with picturesque cafes, bustling restaurants, and charming boats that epitomise the French Riviera's allure.

You will have two hours of free time to explore at your own pace. Perhaps stroll through the historic uphill district of Le Panier, known for its quaint streets and artistic vibe. Afterwards, reboard the coach for the return journey to your ship in Toulon.

This is a guided transfer with a short orientation walk on arrival. You will then have free time to explore independently. Walking during your free time is at your discretion. On Sundays only souvenir shops, restaurants and bars will be open. Regular shops will be closed.

Meet your guide at the pier and set off on a short walking tour through Toulon’s historic Old Quarter.

Discover notable landmarks including the 11th-century Cathedral St-Marie-Majeure, Provençal squares, and a variety of monuments nestled among the quaint streets. Along the way, admire the elegant moss-covered fountains that bring a sense of tranquility to this enchanting area.

Afterwards, enjoy some time at leisure, perhaps soaking up the local ambiance in a cafe, before returning to your ship.

After a short transfer from the port to the city, join a guided walk to the Sagrada Familia, Gaudi’s unfinished masterpiece and one of Barcelona’s most popular tourist attractions. The construction of La Sagrada Familia began on March 19, 1882 as a project by the diocesan architect, Francisco de Paula del Villar. At the end of 1883, Gaudi was commissioned to continue the work, a task which he did not abandon until his death in 1926.

Already designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and a Minor Basilica by Pope Benedict XVI, it is hoped that the church will be completed by 2026, the centenary of Gaudi’s death.

After viewing the grand exterior of this masterpiece, you will continue your excursion to Montjuic to visit the National Art Museum of Catalonia. Here, you can discover the museum's extensive art collections, the history of the building itself and enjoy a beautiful view over Barcelona.

After your visit, return to the port by coach.

The town of Sitges has retained its old fishing village charm by preserving its old town and beaches, while also becoming an internationally renowned destination for its film festival, carnivals and welcoming, progressive culture.

On arrival, a guided walking tour will reveal the highlights of the city, including the baroque, 17th-century Church of St Bartomeu and Santa Telca, the Palau Maricel and the old town, where you can discover the ruins of the medieval town wall, historic buildings and the Plaça de l’Ajuntament square.

Visit the sacred mountain of Montserrat or 'Sawtooth Mountain', where you can admire views from a near birds-eye perspective over the mountain ridge.

Although relatively small by Spanish standards - less than six miles long and 4,280 feet high - this mountain is very distinctive, and the barren peaks of this isolated crag resemble fingers reaching into the sky, as if in prayer. Your coach takes you north from Barcelona along the Llobregat Valley to the railway station at Monistrol, where you join the train.

After the 15-minute ascent on this modern rack-and-pinion railway, reach the famous monastery, which was founded to commemorate the apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary on the mountain. Although it was largely rebuilt in the 19th century, the abbey still houses the statue of the Black Madonna, said to have been found by shepherds in a cave in the 9th century.

Once at the top of the mountain, you will be given a ticket that allows you entry to the Montserrat Audio-Visual Exhibition. If you wish you can walk up to the Sanctuary for a close view of the statue. Finally, after visiting the basilica, enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before returning down the mountain by coach to Barcelona, where you re-join your ship.

Departing the port by coach, drive to Montjuïc, where you can enjoy the panoramic view, before heading to Poble Espanyol, an open-air architectural museum also known as the ‘Spanish Village’. Built in 1928, the Poble Espanyol was designed to impress visitors at the 1929 Barcelona Universal Exposition with the most iconic features of Spanish architecture. The designers visited over 1,600 villages to gain inspiration and collect materials before finalising their design.

During the Exposition, cultural events were held each day, from folk dances to horse-riding competitions. Initially, the venue was to be demolished after the Exposition, but the creators agreed that it should be built to endure. Today, the Poble Espanyol is a space dedicated to architecture, culture and Spanish traditions, where you can find replicas of 117 buildings from different Spanish regions, collections of contemporary art, artisan workshops and local shops.

Enjoy some time to explore before continuing the tour to Tablao de Carmen, which opened in 1988 as a homage to the world-famous Carmen Amaya. Carmen was a Spanish-Romani flamenco dancer born in Barcelona who danced her way to the top from impoverished beginnings, becoming known as ‘the greatest flamenco dancer ever.’ Here, you can watch a traditional Flamenco show and enjoy a glass of Sangria, before returning to the ship.

During your walking tour see the cathedral and La Lonja, Valencia’s Silk Market, today a UNESCO World Heritage site. Completed in 1498 its original function was as a trading exchange for oil but over time it developed into a maritime trading centre and silk exchange.

Then continue to the famous Central Market, one of the oldest and largest food markets in Europe, housed in a beautiful Art Nouveau building. Other highlights seen during your walk include the Town Hall Square, Plaza de la Reina and the Serrano Towers, before returning to the ship by coach.

This excursion takes you to the Vall de Uxó district and the San José Caves. Here you will be able to experience the tranquillity of the longest navigable underground river in Europe.

Inside the cavern you can contemplate the dramatic shapes of the rocks that the water has moulded over the passage of thousands of years, and stalactites and stalagmites that grow at the rate of one inch every century. Listen to the sound of silence in a place where it is possible to discern the murmur of the water and to hear the echo of a drop of water falling into an underground lagoon: discover a beautiful landscape that nature keeps hidden from the light.

Your trip on an open rowing-boat take you through unusually named caves such as the Bat Cave, the Dog Kennel and Diana’s Lake. At one point you break your journey and take a short walk through a section of the caves, re-joining the boat in an especially large and beautiful cavern before drifting gently back to the entrance via a different series of tunnels.

After this relaxing experience, return by coach to your ship.

Explore the city of Valencia by tuk tuk and admire the city highlights including the architectural mix of buildings, such as the Hemisferic and the Museum of Science and Arts. The ride continues, passing by the Palau de Musica which is located in the old riverbed and is the home base of Valencia's principal orchestra.

Slowly but surely, you will reach the city. You will have a little free time to walk through the local Colon Market, dotted with small bars and restaurants. Next, you head towards the old town with short photo stops at Torres de Serranos as well as the beautiful Cathedral of Valencia, a must-see attraction. In addition, the ceramic museum is a feast for the eyes.

Join your coach and guide and head to the Albufera Natural Park. On arrival, begin a walk along the Pujol Gorge path that leads to the Estany del Pujol, an artificial pond created in 1970 and a protected area for local birds. Along the way, your guide will share facts and information about Albufera, including traditional customs of the area.

Next, step aboard a boat to begin a trip across the largest lake in Spain and one of the most important wetland areas on the Iberian Peninsula. It is home to numerous species of wading birds and a rich variety of wildlife.

Your tour begins with a shuttle bus journey into Palma City. The walking tour sets off from La Escollera, first passing by the exterior of the cathedral before making your way to St Francesc Church. Your tour starts with a drive along the Maritime Promenade reaching Bellver Castle, one of the most important examples of Gothic civil architecture in Majorca. Not far from the centre of the city, this castle of “beautiful views” watches over the port and was built by Jaume II at the beginning of the 14th century. It was conceived as a defensive redoubt and royal residence, but it became most famous as a prison, from the middle-ages until the Civil War. Among many others, the enlightenment encyclopaedist, Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos, was a prisoner here for six years; only four months after Jovellanos was set free, the young French Physicist François Arago ventured through the castle. Pause here for an external photo stop, before returning to Palma where the coach will drop you off and then you will continue on foot to the cathedral, constructed between the 13th and 14th century, it is one of the finest Gothic examples of architecture on the continent. Next to it stands the Almudaina Palace, a monument which was converted from an Arab fortress into the residence for the Kings of Majorca. During your walking tour, your guide will point out the most important aspects of this monument from the outside. Continue your walking tour through Old Palma before your return transfer to the ship.

Travel by coach through Palma city centre, enjoying a short panoramic tour before arriving at Son Reus Railway Station to board the historic Soller Railway. Since 1912, this three-foot gauge electric train has operated a daily service along the 17-mile route between Palma and Soller. Enjoy a panoramic view of the Majorcan Mountains, orange groves and quaint villages during your 50-minute scenic train journey which negotiates the 1¾ mile Tunnel Major through the Sierra de Alfabia and the Cinq Pons viaduct. On arrival in Soller, a charming little town set on a hillside, enjoy a short walking tour and the opportunity to explore independently during some free time before returning to the ship by coach.

This train is not exclusive to Saga guests and the carriage may be shared with other passengers. Depending on railway schedules, the train journey could operate in either direction and you may travel to Soller by coach and return by train or vice versa. This tour is not recommended for guests with limited mobility, the tour involves an uphill walk of approximately 20 minutes to reach the centre of Soller from the coach and there are 28 steps leading to/from the train platform. There is an additional mile of essential walking required during your visit to Soller, the area is also hilly so expect to negotiate inclines. The railway carriages are not modernised, are unable to accommodate wheelchairs and do not have air-conditioning. Station platforms are low and there may be a wide gap between the platform edge and the carriage door. The train ride includes 13 tunnels, some of which are quite long, so may not be suitable for passengers who suffer from claustrophobia.

A Majorcan visit is not the same without including the mysterious and otherworldly Drach Caves on your must-see list. Spread over 2000 metres, they are a natural wonder full of spectacular rock formations and home to one of the largest underground lakes in the world. The excursion begins with a coach ride across the island, passing through picturesque villages until you arrive at the Caves of Drach. Beautifully lit, you will walk along the paths where you can fully admire the beauty of these incredible caves before taking a trip across the underground lake accompanied by musicians playing classical music. After this magical visit, then continue along to Porto Cristo, a charming village popular with yachts as a result of its deep harbour. Whilst here, you will have half an hour of free time to enjoy the views from one of the many terraces or take a stroll around the promenade.

This excursion provides you with an opportunity to explore Benidorm independently, spending your time as you choose. As Costa Blanca’s major tourist destination, Benidorm is known for being a sun-soaked town buzzing with energy and modern development. But do not let the high-rise hotels that flank the extensive golden beaches fool you. There are plenty of off-the-beaten-track sights to be seen and a veritable treasure trove of beauty, especially in the old town, for you to explore.

Your time here is at your leisure to explore independently, so the itinerary is in your hands. Perhaps spend your time strolling along the beach. Or, head into the old town, where narrow streets dive off in a myriad of directions, taking you past historic buildings. In the old town you will find the colourful Church of St James, dedicated to the town’s patron saint, complete with a Mediterranean blue dome.

After your free time, return to the port, perhaps with a refreshing new outlook on this part of southeast Spain.

Located within a seemingly inaccessible landscape, flanked by towering mountains and filled with craggy caves, the town of Guadalest has been declared a Monument of Historical and Artistic Value: it is easy to see why. Its iconic belfry is perched precariously at the top of the town, surrounded by the ruined castle and town below.

Upon arrival, enjoy a short, guided tour through this fairy-tale town’s cobblestone streets towards the upper village, accessed via a tunnel carved out of the rock. You will quickly be met with the ruins of a once-great Moorish castle, constructed during Spain’s occupation during the 12th century and destroyed by an earthquake in 1644.

After, visit the tastefully-restored ‘House of the Ordunas’, once home to the overlords of the valley. Drive to the charming town of Sintra, where you can admire many stunning buildings and works of art. The whole town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site on account of its 19th-century romantic architecture.

On arrival you will visit Sintra National Palace, also known as Palácio da Vila, famous for its magnificent painted ceilings. The palace is the only survivor of the country's Royal Halls, dating from the Middle Ages. One of the highlights is its kitchen, complete with huge 110-feet high conical chimneys.

After your visit to the palace, stop for refreshments, and then enjoy free time to explore on your own. The town has retained much of its medieval layout, with labyrinthine streets, flights of steps and arcaded buildings.

On your return journey to the ship you will follow a section of the scenic ocean road, and pass the Belém district with its famous tower.

During the visit to Sintra Palace there will be one hour of standing and essential walking covering a approximately 500 metres. There are approximately 120 steps and a winding staircase inside the palace. Walking during time at leisure is at your discretion, but please note Sintra Town has cobbled streets, steps and inclines. The drive to Sintra will take approximately one hour, the return drive to the ship will take 90 minutes. You will have approximately one hour at the Sintra National Palace, followed by 90 minutes of free time.

Uncover the history of Lisbon as you explore the city with a local guide on foot. Starting from the port your guide will take you into the city to see some of Lisbon’s significant examples of historical architecture and tell you the city’s stories and traditions.

The Chiado district is one of the highlights of your walking tour. The several bookstores, cafes and other shops here have barely changed since they were founded more than half a century ago. As you walk through the city, you'll see the Praça do Comércio, also known as Black Horse Square, and Largo do Carmo, where Quartel do Carmo can be found, before heading down to Rossio, once the liveliest square in the city. Here you can admire the Dona Maria National Theatre, originally built around 1450.

Just off the northeast corner of Rossio sits a small but lively square brimming with history: São Domingos, home to the São Domingos church which is now a National Monument. Enjoy a short stop for a coffee and cake before continuing your walk through Rua da Prata passing by Sé de Lisboa, the 12th-century cathedral of Lisbon.

You'll then begin the walk back to the ship via part of the Alfama district, a labyrinth of narrow cobbled alleyways and colourful houses.

Leaving the port, your journey by coach takes you over the 25th April bridge and on a scenic drive to Sesimbra, an old fishing village which lies at the foothills of the Serra da Arrábida mountain range. The village is lined with traditional whitewashed houses, overlooked by Sesimbra’s Moorish Castle. Enjoy an exterior visit of the castle for approximately 30 minutes before the tour continues by coach to Azeitão.

Azeitão is located in the nature reserve of the Serra da Arrábida and is known for its tasty regional products. During your time in the area, you will visit one of the local wine cellars and have the opportunity to taste the Moscatel wines.
