Piraeus has been the main Athenian port since antiquity, as Athens is the capital of the wealthy Attica region as well as the country. The city sprawls around a rocky hill called the Acropolis, crowned by the Parthenon Temple dedicated to the city’s patron, the ancient goddess, Athena. The amazingly well-preserved Theatre of Dionysus Eleuthereus, also on the hill, is a 4th-century BC auditorium, built to hold 17,000 people.

Ancient Cartagena with its Roman origins has been a port for two millennia. Explore some of its treasures such as the Casa de la Fortuna – an important Roman villa retaining some of its early murals and mosaics, the medieval fort of Castillo de la Conception, and the towering Roman amphitheatre, dating to around 100 BC. The city is also noted for its Modernist buildings designed by pupils of the architect and artist Gaudi, whose famous works Park Güell and Sagrada Familia can be seen in Barcelona. You may also like to sample some of the city’s tapas bars, or enjoy exploring the marina area.
