Naples, set on the coast overlooking the beautiful bay of the same name, is the most important port in Southern Italy. Even today, this hectic city retains its ancient Roman layout and there are many historic buildings to discover, including the oldest castle in Naples, Castel dell'Ovo – Egg Castle – built on an island, the cathedral and the huge Castel Nuovo, built in 1279-1282, in Town Hall Square. Perhaps join an excursion to the world-famous archaeological site of Pompeii, buried under pumice and volcanic ash for 1700 years when Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD 79. This preserved the buildings and many inhabitants in a frozen 'moment in time'. See shops, taverns and a covered market, but probably the most touching sights are the homes.
