St Peter Port with its narrow, cobbled streets, pretty harbour and quays, is the capital of the Channel Island of Guernsey. Within the town lies the Guernsey Museum and Art Gallery where you can learn about the history of the island, and Hautevile House – the preserved home of poet and novelist Victor Hugo. Watching over the town is Castle Cornet, the ancient fortress that guards the harbour and is home to five museums and period gardens.

You’ll have a new appreciation of post-war architecture following a visit to Le Havre, France’s second largest port, which was reshaped following World War II. Architect Auguste Perret was the man behind the city’s modernist redesign and his sensitive reconstruction and innovative use of concrete have earned it a place on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Take a stroll through the main square, and contrast modernist buildings such as Maison de la Culture with the 16th-century Notre Dame cathedral.

Set beside the River Seine, this charming French city is a medieval gem, whose magnificent Gothic cathedral provided inspiration to the impressionist painter Claude Monet. It’s also the city where Joan of Arc was tried and burnt at the stake.
