Canary Island Hopping

This included excursion takes you on a leisurely sightseeing drive, with two photo stops and the opportunity to try the traditional drink Poncha. The excursion begins as you leave the port, passing Santa Catarina Park, and travels west towards the Santa Rita area, before arriving at your first viewpoint overlooking Funchal.

Then continue southwest, passing Câmara de Lobos, a picturesque fishing village once painted by Sir Winston Churchill. Enjoy a short stop at Pico da Torre viewpoint where you can see the village and its bay from above. Reboard your coach and head to a local establishment, close to the port, where you can try the traditional Poncha made with sugarcane Rum.

After your taste of Poncha, return to the ship by coach or make your own way back independently.

Take in the highlights of La Palma on a scenic drive around the island, beginning in the capital, Santa Cruz de la Palma. From here, continue to the Mirador de la Concepcion, stopping for photos at this viewpoint before continuing to the Caldera de Taburiente, one of the largest extinct volcanic craters in the world. It is more than five miles in diameter and, in places, over 5,000 feet deep.

After pausing for photographs, your coach takes you through the western part of La Palma to Los Llanos de Aridane, the largest town on the island which has a population of over 20,000. Enjoy vistas of Los Llanos, surrounded by cacti and banana plantations, before returning to your ship via the town of El Paso.

This snapshot tour takes you on a scenic drive with a number of stops, including a stop at the island's old capital, Teguise.

After leaving your ship, travel inland to Teguise, which was founded in the 15th century by the Conquistadors. On days when there is no market, you will be able to admire the beautifully restored houses and picturesque square.

Continue to Caleta Famara Beach, which Lanzarote artist César Manrique frequented as a child, and stop for photographs before passing through the typical Canarian villages of Soo, La Santa, Tinajo, Tiagua and Mozaga.

Stop at the Peasants' Monument (Monumento al Campesino), which is 50-feet high and was created by Manrique in 1968 as a tribute to the work of the island’s peasant farmers before returning to your waiting ship.

Since the end of the 15th century, the city of Cádiz has provided a gateway to the New World. Join us in search of the whales and dolphins in the sea surrounding Madeira, accompanied by a marine biologist and skipper. Before leaving, there will be a short introduction before your adventure begins; then set off on your RIB, fully equipped for observing dramatic marine life.

Thanks to lookouts on land who will guide your boat towards the mammals, you will likely see Short-finned Pilot Whales, Bottlenose Dolphins, Atlantic Spotted Dolphins and Common Dolphins that will leap and jump from the water displaying their acrobatic moves as they swim alongside the boats. If you are lucky, you may also spot a Risso’s Dolphin, a Beaked Whale or an Orca, all of which are occasional visitors to Madeira.

On this small group experience, join us in search of the endemic land birds of Madeira, including the Madeiran Firecrest, the Laurel Pigeon and the Madeiran Chaffinch. 

This excursion explores different habitats and their unique biodiversity, from grassland, coastal, forest and freshwater species with a special focus on endemic birds. From around 1900 feet above sea level you have the opportunity to observe the endemic bird species and subspecies of Madeira and Macaronesia.

A stop will be made at the Laurel Forest Important Bird Area, where you will have the opportunity to record your bird sightings for the Portuguese bird conservation society.

Visit the village of Monte, take a cable car ride over the valley of Joao Gomes and explore the botanical gardens. Leave the pier and drive towards Monte, known for its collection of fine properties and gardens, perched on a hill above Funchal.

Monte’s 18th-century, twin towered Church is one of the area’s most prominent landmarks. In the centre of the high altar of the church stands the statue of Our Lady of Monte, credited with being the source of many miracles. Make your way to the cable car station in Monte and take a ride to the botanical gardens.

Along the way, enjoy the views across the Valley of João Gomes River before reaching the gardens, located on the eastern edge of Funchal and known as one of the best examples of Madeiran landscaped gardens. Located in the grounds of a former private house, the gardens are host to a profusion of plants and flowers, from all parts of the world, which thrive in the island’s temperate climate.

This is a strenuous excursion where extensive walking is required over cobbled, uneven ground, many steps and steep inclines. Walking of up to one mile is essential and this may increase dependent on the garden visit. There are 40 steps in Monte Village (and an optional 75 steps to visit the church), 85 steps for the cable car and between 50-100 steps during the visit to the garden. We recommend that you wear flat walking shoes. You should be physically fit to participate on this excursion.

Leave the pier and head to the belvedere of Pico dos Barcelos, which offers a sweeping panorama. Continue next to the fishing village of Câmara de Lobos, which was once painted by Sir Winston Churchill. Known for its quaint, red-roofed houses and brightly painted fishing boats, its name translates to ‘The Sea Wolves’ Lair’.

To reach Cabo Girão, your coach takes you through pine woods and eucalyptus forests. Cabo Girão is said to be the second-highest sea cliff in Europe: it rises right out of the sea, and the viewpoint where you stop for photos offers coastal views along Funchal, and out to the distant horizon. Your journey then takes you up into the mountains, passing the vineyards of Estreito de Câmara Lobos, one of the most important winegrowing areas of the island. Many of the vines can be seen growing on terraces along the steep valleys that you pass on the way.

Arriving at the Adega da Quinta Restaurant, at Quinta d o Estreito, you can enjoy more panoramas over the coast. Nearby, you can spot the original wine cellar where barrels of Madeira wine, local brandy and ‘ginja’ - a sweet cherry liqueur - are stored. Sample some local wine and Portuguese cheese here before heading back to the ship.

There is approximately 450 yards of essential walking, some over cobbled and sloped ground (assuming you participate in walking at the photo stops). You may encounter a number of steps (some optional) and views are weather dependent. There are up to five steps at the restaurant.

Following a ‘Levada’ trail is one of the most enjoyable ways of seeing Madeira. These irrigation channels were created in the 19th century by the Portuguese settlers, who painstakingly carved them out of the rock by hand. Designed to carry fresh water from the north to the drier southern regions of the island, they helped to create many of the lush landscapes that can be seen today.

This guided walk will follow the course of The Levadas for over three miles, allowing you to admire the verdant plants, mountain views and green farmland that cover Madeira. You will first be driven to Vale Paraiso, where you set off for your two-hour walk. The first half will be a gentle stroll over fairly level ground, rising to the Camacha area for its surrounding views. The second stretch will take you all the way to Rochão, where you rejoin the coach for your return journey to the port.

Enjoy a visit to the unique El Paso Silk Museum and the restored 17th-century sugar estate, Hotel Hacienda de Abajo. Sit back and enjoy the lush scenery as you travel along mountain roads, passing vineyards and banana plantations en route to El Paso. Upon arrival, a short stroll takes you to the small silk museum where you can witness silk being weaved by a 500-year-old process - the only place in Europe where this method is still used.

Afterwards, it is time to visit a restored 17th-century sugar estate, now the small and luxurious Hotel Hacienda de Abajo. Surrounded by rich vegetation and botanical gardens, this historic manor house hosts a collection of art on display, including sculptures, paintings, furniture and porcelain, in addition to some tapestries. Fresh fruit punch will be served on arrival before your guide will take you on a tour of the main rooms.

Afterwards, a selection of teas and pastries will be served on a terrace overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, weather permitting. On your return journey to Santa Cruz, a short photo-stop will be made at La Glorieta Square, allowing you to feast your eyes on the mosaics by local artist Luis Morera.

This tour involves up to 500 yards of walking and 20 steps. You travel aboard a smaller vehicle than used on other tours and will journey along narrow, winding roads. Some displays in the museum will be in Spanish. Due to the size of the museum, this tour has limited capacity.

Over the past century, the volcanic origins of La Palma have shaped its landscapes. Join us and explore the volcanic vistas as you head off the beaten track in a 4x4 bus. Leave the pier and head towards the hills of Las Breñas, crossing thick vegetation and looking over Cumbre Nueva, the island’s main mountain range.

Continue into the mountains, across the National Park and on towards the Refugio del Pilar, until you reach the Mirador del Jable viewpoint. From this natural balcony enjoy a panoramic view of the Aridane Valley, the Caldera del Taburiente and the Cumbre Nueva hills.

Reboard your bus, to continue your adventure through volcanic scenery and along off-road tracks, pausing at the San Juan volcanic area, where you will be able to see a flowing lava river before crossing a large area of Canary Island pine. Make a short stop at a picnic area to tuck into some traditional Canarian snacks before driving to the town of Fuencaliente. You will stop here to see the San Antonio volcano and the Teneguia volcano. After admiring the view at approximately 633 metres above sea level, return to the ship by road.

During this tour you will travel by 4x4 bus, the route can be bumpy and winding roads are taken, those that suffer with motion sickness should take precautions. Seat belts must be worn at all times when on the bus. This tour is not recommended for those with back, neck or hip problems. Although there is minimal walking on this tour, you must be able to get on and off the 4x4 bus unaided with five high steps to negotiate. This tour is for a small group and there is limited capacity. Enjoy this small group tour as you embark on a scenic drive in an open top minibus to the Mirador de la Concepcion on the outskirts of Santa Cruz de la Palma. Marvel at the panoramas over the town and north coast of the island before heading onto the Santuario Virgen de Las Nieves, located in the highest part of the town and one of the most popular shrines in the capital.

Inside the small, whitewashed church, you will find the island’s most sacred icon, the Virgin Mary of the Snows - the patron saint of the island. Continue to the Barco de la Virgen in the main town of Santa Cruz de la Palma, a replica of Columbus’ Santa Maria. Take a guided walk to discover the streets and squares including Plaza Alameda, Plaza San Francisco, and Placeta Borrero. Admire the two-storey Renaissance-style Town Hall and the 17th century church Iglesia del Salvador before reboarding the bus to return to your ship.

Discover the unique night skies of La Palma, certified by UNESCO as a starlight reserve.

The tour starts with a panoramic drive towards the night sky lookout area of Llano del Jable Astronomical Viewpoint. There will be a comfort stop along the way at the El Paso Centre. Arriving at the viewpoint with your expert stargazing guide, you can use the telescopes and binoculars provided to admire the clear night skies of La Palma.

This tour is graded on the time spent standing combined with the walking distance required. There is approximately 250 yards of essential walking, over some uneven terrain. We recommend that you wear warm, layered clothing as most of this excursion takes place at an outdoor viewpoint and you will be standing during this time (there is no seating). The location of the viewpoint may change and this tour is weather dependent. This tour has limited capacity and is only available for a small group. The drive to and from the viewpoint is approximately 45 minutes to one hour each way.

Located in Cañadas del Teide National Park is Mount Teide, the highest mountain in all of the Spanish territories. The soaring peak and surrounding arid landscape offers contrasting panoramic views, and this tour takes you on the cable car to the summit so you can see the national park from above.

Setting off from Santa Cruz your drive will take you through the Esperanza Forest and on to the National Park. On reaching the cable car station at approximately 7700 feet above sea level, a short stop will be made to admire the view before boarding the cable car.

Make sure you have your camera close to hand during this eight-minute ride to the mountain’s 12,198-foot summit. You have free time here to take in the vistas of sprawling mountains punctuated by rugged petrified rock. Then return to the lower station to rejoin your coach for a scenic drive that takes in more of this unique island’s countryside, before finally arriving back at the port.

There is approximately three-quarters-of-a-mile of walking during this excursion. Some over uneven surfaces and inclines. There are 25 steps to access the cable car. This excursion involves spending several hours at altitudes ranging from 7,500 to 12,000 feet above sea level. We recommend that you wear flat walking shoes and layered clothing and bring a warm jacket as it can be cold and windy. Each cable-car takes a maximum of 44 passengers and travels to the top in under eight minutes; you may need to stand in a queue while waiting to board.

Set off for a scenic drive through north Tenerife as you head for the haven of the Orchid Gardens. En route, you’ll pass through Oratava Valley, pausing for photographs at the Humboldt Viewpoint. Have your camera ready to record the views here which stretch from Mount Tiede to the coast of Puerto de la Cruz. The viewpoint is named after the explorer and naturalist Alexander Humboldt, who visited the island in 1799. He also visited the garden that previously stood on the site of what is now the Orchid Gardens, established in 1774 and the oldest on the island.

Upon arrival at the gardens, you will be welcomed by one of the owners who will act as your guide. In their company, explore the garden with its water feature, Dragon Tree, believed to be over 400 years old, and of course the collection of orchids, housed and displayed in a curving walkway. As well as yourself, past visitors to the garden have included the author Agatha Christie and the prolific and celebrated Victorian botanical artist, Marianne North. Afterwards, take time out to relax in the Orchid Gardens’ cafe as you enjoy some refreshments before returning to your ship.

This tour involves walking of at least 650 yards over uneven terrain with gravel-covered areas with some slopes and steps to negotiate. Comfortable, non-slip shoes are recommended.

After leaving the busy harbour of Santa Cruz, enjoy a drive along Maritime Avenue to the village of San Andrés, one of the island’s oldest settlements dating back to 1497. The village is renowned for its golden beach, Las Teresitas, which was made partly from 238,000 tons of sand imported from the former Spanish Sahara. Pause for photographs here before driving on to El Bailadero, the highest point in this area, offering panoramic views of a wild landscape.

Through a tunnel, you then reach the other side of the Anaga Mountains and the hidden village of Taganana, where you stop to sample some local wine and cheese. Once refreshed, continue through the living museum of Mercedes Forest to Pico del Ingles, the Mirador del Carmen and Cantera: all offering more views of the wild countryside and northern coast. You return to Santa Cruz via La Laguna, pausing to visit the 18th-century ‘Iglesia del Cristo’ (Christ Church) if a service is not taking place.

There will be at least 500 yards of walking with a steep slope from the refreshment venue to the coach. The journey through the Anaga Mountains involves travelling on steep, winding roads - vertigo sufferers should take this into consideration.

Discover Tenerife’s most striking natural feature, Mount Teide, without the exertion of a demanding hike. Rising to a height of 12,000 feet, it is the highest peak in Spanish territory and has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Your excursion begins with a drive towards the old colonial capital of La Laguna, situated in the Aguere Valley.

After passing through the photographic surroundings, journey south along the base of the mountain range, through pine forests and foothills to Teide National Park. Declared a national park in 1954, the park includes an enormous volcanic crater measuring over 29 miles in circumference. The park is situated at an altitude of over one mile above sea level: in winter, snow and gale force winds often close roads through it; during the summer months, the arid landscape gives visitors the impression of having walked onto the set of a western movie and can reach temperatures of over 37°C. At the heart of the crater, you visit the National Parador Visitors’ Centre and stand in the shadows of the majestic Roques de García.

During the course of the tour, a stop will also be made for refreshments. On your return journey to Santa Cruz, there will be several photo stops where you can savour the sweeping scenery.

Walking during this excursion is at your discretion but you should expect to walk at least 500 yards over some uneven surfaces, and there may be a considerable amount of standing. We recommend that you take an extra layer of clothing as temperatures towards the top of the mountain may be considerably colder than at sea level.

Seek out whales and dolphins in their natural habitat in the waters of southern Tenerife. Leaving the pier to Santa Cruz de Tenerife, travel one-hour by coach to the harbour of Puerto Colon in Playa des Las Americas.

Upon arrival, board one of the catamarans (not exclusive to Saga guests) in search of whales and dolphins. Pilot and sperm whales lurk in the waters around the island of Tenerife all year round and you may also see dolphins or other species of whales if you are lucky.

During the boat trip, drinks will be served and you will have some free time to swim if you wish. After this marine watching experience, return to Playa de Las Americas and travel back by road to the pier.

Additional Information

The boat used during this excursion is not exclusive to Saga guests. This excursion involves minimal walking but there are about eight steps to negotiate when getting on and off the catamaran and you should be a confident swimmer if you wish to go in the water. There are toilet facilities on board the boat and steps are required to access them. Comfortable clothing and sunscreen is recommended: please wear a swimsuit under your clothes and bring a towel if you wish to go swimming. Guests are required to remove their shoes before boarding the boat. All activities in the water are undertaken at your own risk. Participants may order a packed lunch from the ship. The drive to and from the boat is approximately one hour each way. The seats on the boat are hard benches.

The abundant colour and sheer variety of plants, flowers and vegetation that thrive in the Canary Islands is the focus on this excursion. First, take a drive along the island’s main highway to Puerto de la Cruz, an old colonial town on the north coast. Enjoy some free time to explore the town at your leisure.

After, the first garden you visit is the Jardin Botanico, founded by a royal decree of King Charles III of Spain in 1788. He wanted to create a nursery where plants, shrubs and flowers, brought by the Conquistadors from the New World, could acclimatise to Spanish soil. Many of the plants here are the original specimens, delivered shortly after the opening of the garden. The centrepiece is a huge South American fig tree whose enormous branches and roots have created an outlandish treehouse.

From the Jardin Botanico, embark on a drive to the Orchid Gardens of Sitio Litre, which have welcomed many distinguished visitors including the famous crime writer Agatha Christie. These tranquil gardens are bursting with colour and have the largest collection of orchids in the Canary Islands. Here, enjoy tea or coffee with pastries and perhaps browse the shop before the return drive to Santa Cruz.

This tour involves walking a distance of at least one mile. There are also approximately 30 steep steps. The journey to Puerto de la Cruz should take around 45 minutes each way.

Join us on a scenic drive into the mountains of Anaga and enjoy some time at leisure in the town of La Laguna.

Your tour starts with a drive into the mountains, passing the fishing village of San Andres. During your drive you may be able to spot one of Tenerife’s symbols, the ‘Dragon Tree’, and admire the terraces of cultivated land.

There will be a short stop at the panoramic viewpoint of Pico del Ingles, where you can capture the view of the north and south side of the island. There will also be a stop at either Jardina viewpoint or Cruz del Carmen viewpoint, from where you can see La Laguna.

The last stop on your tour will be in La Laguna, where you can spend time at leisure and see the Christ Church. You will have approximately 30 minutes here before your return drive to the ship.

This tour includes a scenic drive and 30-minute stop in La Laguna for time at leisure. There is approximately 150 yards of essential walking required, any additional walking is at your discretion. The Christ Church in La Laguna is not always open due to festivities and services. Toilet facilities will be available in La Laguna. The tour may operate in a different order to described, so your visit to La Laguna may be at the beginning or end of the tour. This excursion is not recommended for vertigo sufferers and those prone to travel sickness, due to the winding mountain roads.

Discover the fascinating landscape of Garajonay National Park as you hike through the labyrinth of green forests and woodland with a local guide. This walk will take you up to El Alto de Garajonay, the highest point on La Gomera, 4,878 feet above sea level. From the summit, on a clear day, you may be able to see Mount Teide on Tenerife and the islands of La Palma and El Hierro.

The tour starts with a coach ride along the south road to Garajonay National Park. A short stop will be made at Agando Rock, to enable you to enjoy the views of Benchijigua Valley.

Once you reach the National Park, it is time to leave the coach and continue your journey on foot. The walk takes approximately one-and-a-half hours and goes through forests and woodland. Some of the species that grow here have completely disappeared in other parts of the world: one example is Erica Arborea, a heather plant that can grow to a height of over 50 feet.

After your walk, re-join your coach and drive northwards through the National Park, passing the typical Canarian villages of Agulo and Hermigua, before returning to San Sebastian.

This is a strenuous excursion, and you should be physically fit to participate. The walk will last approximately one-and-a-half hours along steep mountain paths and uneven surfaces. Expect to cover a distance of about six-and-a-quarter miles. Warm clothes, walking shoes or sturdy trainers are essential. The temperature will probably be much cooler at El Alto than at sea level, so you should dress in layers.

A wealth of breathtaking views await on this excursion, which ascends to the hills of La Gomera. Your coach will leave the capital behind and will follow the island’s arid slopes up to the wooded valleys. After climbing to around 4,000 feet, you arrive at Garajonay National Park, home to one of the world’s few surviving laurel woodlands, considered to be a ‘living fossil’. Here you pause amid the rocky peaks and volcanic chimneys to photograph and take in the landscapes, dotted with subtropical plants.

Driving further towards the west of the island, enjoy the view overlooking the palm-covered slopes of the Valle Gran Rey, before continuing to the quaint village of Agulo. Stop in Las Rosas for refreshments and a demonstration of ‘El Silbo’ - La Gomera`s unique whistling language. You also pause at the visitors’ centre, only a few minutes away. The Bandama Caldera is one of the youngest volcanoes on the Canarian archipelago. Its crater is over 650 feet deep, has a diameter of almost three-quarters of a mile and was last active about 3,000 years ago, when a series of eruptions took place that gave the Santa Brígida district its distinctive topography.

Leaving the pier, your coach will take you up towards the volcano. Here, begin your trek along a green path that takes you right into the heart of the Bandama Crater. At the very centre of the crater, you will see an abandoned homestead; this was formerly the only inhabited volcanic crater in the world! From this point, enjoy interior views of the crater which will reveal the effects of the eruptions.

After resting for a while, continue walking up the side of the crater: depending on the weather, you should be rewarded at the end with a panoramic view of the northern part of Gran Canaria. It will then be time to re-join your coach and transfer back to the port.

Seville’s history is punctuated by peaks and troughs: golden ages and a great plague which wiped out half of the city’s population. Standing testament to both its past and present is the architecture awaiting your exploration on this tour, including the largest cathedral in the world and a palace fit for a ruler – several, in fact.

Upon arrival in Seville, start your excursion with a visit to Plaza de España – a semi-circular brick building overlooking a small canal, then continue with a drive Paseo de Colon where you will start your walking tour through the Santa Cruz Quarter. This enchanting neighbourhood, formerly the Jewish Quarter, is renowned for its charming squares.

Your walk continues towards Seville’s cathedral, a symbol of Christianity’s triumph over Islamic rule: after all, the Christian holy place was built on top of the Islamic one. This tour starts with a panoramic drive around Cádiz, the oldest continuously inhabited city in Spain. The historic town centre is still surrounded by fortifications, dating mainly from the 18th century, and inside the walls it has changed little over the past 300 years: few buildings are more than three or four stories high, and the cathedral dome still dominates the city. Following your tour, proceed to a local ‘tablao’ – an Andalusian tavern – for an authentic flamenco performance.

Flamenco originated as the music of Spanish gypsies, incorporating both Western European and North African influences. Sit back and enjoy a traditional performance of its staccato, balletic dances, haunting ballads and fiery guitar music. While enjoying the music and dancing, you will be served wine and local ‘tapas’ – small plates of Serrano ham, cheese and Spanish omelettes. You can even try some flamenco dancing for yourself!

Arriving at Jerez de la Frontera, famous as the home of sherry, flamenco dancing and purebred Andalusian horses, enjoy a short walk in the town centre.
