Julie and Amanda, The Teddy Bear Ladies from the Repair Shop, children’s authors, and much more...
Julie and Amanda began working together in 2006 when they discovered a shared passion for promoting and encouraging art and creativity primarily through sewing.
They joined forces to combine teddy bear and soft toy design and creation with helping to enthuse children (and their parents) through workshops and parties. The business gradually developed into restoration and repair and they are now able to share their passion, knowledge and skills with a wider audience through their role as regular experts on the BBC’s, ‘The Repair Shop’. Alongside their regular appearances on TV and radio, they also have their own podcast called ‘Bearly Begun’.
During your cruise you can look forward to an informative talk, two craft workshops and the opportunity to bring your own bear to an afternoon tea with the Teddy Bear Ladies.

Chris Lubbe
Chris grew up in Durban, South Africa and witnessed the brutality of apartheid first hand. He made the decision early in his life to become an activist and to oppose the inhumane system of apartheid. This decision put him on a direct collision course with the apartheid regime, resulting in spells of incarceration, torture and near-death experiences.
Then, following Nelson Mandela’s release from prison in 1990, Chris became his bodyguard and was involved in the negotiations that paved the way for South Africa’s inaugural democratic elections. His involvement in pivotal agreements provided him with invaluable insights and anecdotes, which he shares alongside his personal narrative, imparting lessons gleaned from working closely with icons such as Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu. Chris will give four on-board talks during your cruise.
Itinerary
Embark Spirit of Discovery.
Depart 1700.
Arrive 0800. Depart 2100.
Visit Cádiz when our sister ships Spirit of Discovery and Spirit of Adventure are both in port. 3,000-year-old Cádiz is Western Europe’s oldest continually inhabited city since its founding by the ancient seafaring Phoenicians. It is strung along a peninsula, and was refortified in the 17th-century after the British attacked twice, nearly destroying the city. Key landmarks include the Baroque and neoclassical cathedral with its yellow dome and the adjoining El Sagarario, the Roman amphitheatre, Castillo de Santa Catalaina and the Torre Tavira – one of 129 watchtowers dotted throughout the city.
Included excursion
See some of the city’s attractions, both old and new, during an included excursion.
Optional excursions
Enjoy a day trip to Seville or explore Cádiz on foot with a local guide.
Arrive 0800. Depart 1700.
Watching over the entrance to the Mediterranean, stands the unmistakable limestone Rock of Gibraltar. At its base lies Gibraltar which is connected to the end of the Iberian Peninsula by a sandy isthmus and offers an intriguing blend of British and Spanish culture. Discover Gibraltar’s Palladian architecture and typically British sights, such as red pillar boxes and familiar highstreet chains. Alternatively, visit the military museum, which is housed underground in a former military barracks and exhibits artefacts dating back to the 18th century.
Included excursion
Uncover Gibraltar’s quirky British charm on an included excursion.
Optional excursion
Go in search of dolphins and other marine life in Gibraltar’s bay.
Arrive 0800. Depart 1700.
Named in Spanish after the reef that edges its shoreline, peaceful Arrecife has been the island’s capital since it took the title from nearby Teguise in 1852. This relatively sleepy port’s origins can be seen in the whitewashed fishermen cottages and 17th-century church set around the coastal lagoon of El Charco de San Gines. From Arrecife, you can discover the vast lava fields and crater-studded landscapes of Timanfaya National Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
Included excursion
Enjoy the scenery on a choice of included excursion.
Optional excursions
Visit northern Lanzarote and the Jameos del Agua Cave, or perhaps head to Timanfaya National Park.
Arrive 1300 on February 14. Depart 1600 on February 15.
Madeira is a verdant, mountainous island formed from a volcanic eruption and known for its namesake wine. Often described as the ‘floating garden in the Atlantic’, the island is home to the world’s largest laurel forest and Botanical Gardens where exotic indigenous plants grow. An overnight visit gives you time to experience the lively atmosphere and colourful costumes of carnival, which will be in full swing here in Funchal.
Included excursion

Optional excursions

Arrive 0800. Depart 1700.
La Palma is the greenest of the Canaries and large tracts of its laurel forests have been declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The capital, Santa Cruz, is set in a sweeping natural amphitheatre and was a hub for New World explorers and merchant traders during the Age of Exploration. Its history is reflected in the 16th-century Castilian architecture and the old quarter with its wooden balconies and cobbled lanes is set around the Renaissance Plaza Espana.

Its capital Santa Cruz has a mix of old and new sights, from the central square of Plaza de Espana, which was built in 1929 to the auditorium, an expressionist structure that resembles a wave. Your visit coincides with the island’s vibrant carnival, said to rival that of Rio de Janeiro, which parades through the main avenue of Santa Cruz near the port.

It is the highest peak in Spanish territory and has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The park is situated at an altitude of over one mile above sea level: in winter, snow and gale force winds often close roads through it; during the summer months, the arid landscape gives visitors the impression of having walked onto the set of a western movie and can reach temperatures of over 37°C. Stand in the shadows of the majestic Roques de García as you pause for a photo stop before returning to your ship in Santa Cruz. During the tour, a stop will be made for a tea or coffee.
Additional Information
Please note: Walking during this excursion is at your discretion but you should expect to walk at least 500 yards over some uneven surfaces, and there may be a considerable amount of standing. A Day in Seville
Activity Level: Strenuous Activity
Discover Seville on a walking tour and visit to the cathedral.
Seville’s history is punctuated by peaks and troughs: golden ages and a great plague which wiped out half of the city’s population. The architecture you will see during this tour is testament to both its past and present, including the largest cathedral in the world and a palace fit for a ruler – several, in fact.
After a transfer of approximately one-and-three-quarter hours, you will arrive in Seville. Your tour begins with a drive to Plaza de España – a semi-circular brick monument overlooking a small canal. Continue to Paseo de Colon and alight for your guided walking tour through the Santa Cruz Quarter. This neighbourhood, formerly the Jewish Quarter, is renowned for its charming squares.
Next, walk towards Seville’s cathedral, a symbol of Christianity’s triumph over Islamic rule: after all, the Christian holy place was built on top of the Islamic one. Gaze up at the tall minaret which has been transformed into the cathedral’s belltower and, stepping inside the cathedral itself, you will find high vaulted ceilings, 80 chapels and Christopher Columbus’s tomb. Gaze at the golden altar piece, which was the lifework of Flemish craftsman Pierre Dancart, taking over 60 years to perfect! You will then have the opportunity for some time at leisure to explore before returning to the ship by coach.
Additional Information
Please note: Expect to walk up to two miles across uneven surfaces, any further walking during free time is at your discretion. At the cathedral there are approximately 15 steps to negotiate. We recommend that you wear flat walking shoes. You will spend approximately 45 minutes at the cathedral. During peak periods, some areas may be crowded. The tickets for the cathedral must be purchased in advance, therefore this tour is non-refundable. You will have approximately 45 minutes of free time. A packed lunch can be supplied by the ship on request. The drive from the ship to Seville will take approximately one-and-a-half hours each way. Fire Mountain with Volcano BBQ
See Timanfaya National Park’s spectacular landscapes and enjoy a BBQ cooked by the volcano heat.
Frequently included in our list of ‘top quality-scoring tours’, Fire Mountain with Volcano BBQ is certainly something unique that we are confident you will enjoy. It is known as the ‘Island of Volcanoes’ for good reason: the landscape of Lanzarote is punctuated by over 300 volcanic cones overlooking blackened lava fields which were created between 1730 and 1736 when almost a third of the island was covered in lava. Even today, volcanic activity can be observed in Timanfaya National Park, and on this excursion your BBQ meal will be cooked using the very heat source that altered the island’s physical shape, as well as its agricultural and cultural identities.
Your tour vehicle leaves the port and, having passed through the whitewashed villages of Puerto del Carmen, Mache and Yaiza, arrives at the national park. From here you transfer to one of the national park’s coaches for a drive around the edges and slopes of the volcanoes.
Then, head to ‘El Diablo’, a restaurant offering a 360-degree panorama across the surrounding rugged landscape. Enjoy a volcano BBQ, cooked by the heat contained just below the surface, accompanied by red or white wine, soft drinks, beer or water, followed by ‘Bienmesable’ – a traditional Lanzarote dessert.
Afterwards, travel south for views across the geologically fascinating El Golfo and Los Hervideros, boasting caves and craters created by the flow of lava. See Janubio, where vegetables are grown in fields of lava pellets before arriving at one of La Geria’s wine cellars.
Finally, return to the ship.
Additional Information
Please note: This excursion involves walking approximately 350 yards with prolonged periods of standing: any additional walking is at your discretion. Walking may be exceptionally uneven if negotiating volcanic rock. This area is a very popular tourist attraction, which could result in delays entering the national park. This tour may operate in reverse. The lunch consists of BBQ grilled chicken with mojo sauce and canary island wrinkled potatoes and a Bienmesable desert. This tour has limited capacity.

Once at the national park, begin a tour of the craters and lava beds in this lunar-like terrain. Your guide will perform demonstrations to show the latent power of the volcano.
Afterwards travel through the Salt Planes to La Geria, where vineyards dot the landscape. Here, the vines are protected by semi-circular stonewalls, making them look more like art than agriculture. A stop here will be made to visit a bodega, where there will be the opportunity to purchase some Lanzarote wine before returning to the ship, with a short stop at the Aloe Vera Farm on the way.

Gardens of the Valley
Activity Level: Strenuous Activity
The abundant colour and sheer variety of plants, flowers and vegetation that thrive in the Canary Islands is the focus on this excursion.
First, take a drive along the island’s main highway to Puerto de la Cruz, an old colonial town on the north coast. The first garden you visit is the Jardin Botanico, founded by a Royal decree of King Charles III of Spain in 1788. He wanted to create a nursery where plants, shrubs and flowers, brought by the Conquistadors from the New World, could acclimatise to Spanish soil. Many of the plants here are the original specimens, delivered shortly after the opening of the garden. The centrepiece is a huge South American fig tree whose branches and roots have created an outlandish treehouse.
Next, a short drive brings you to the Orchid Gardens of Sitio Litre, which have welcomed many distinguished visitors including the famous crime writer Agatha Christie. These tranquil gardens are bursting with colour and have the largest collection of orchids in the Canary Islands. Here, enjoy tea or coffee with pastries and perhaps browse the shop.
Afterwards, enjoy some free time to explore Puerto de la Cruz at your leisure before the return drive to Santa Cruz.

Visit the orchid gardens of Sitio Litre, see the ancient Dragon Tree, and the extensive collection of orchids before enjoying a refreshment.
Set off on a scenic drive through north Tenerife towards the Orchid Gardens. En route, you will pass through Oratava Valley, pausing for photographs at the Humboldt Viewpoint. Local port safety and security measures can result in significant additional walking being required between the ship’s gangway and tour vehicles. This distance depends upon the berth we are assigned on the day and is therefore not included in the excursion walking grade. Should you have any concerns please see the onboard Explore Ashore Team, who will be able to provide up-to-date information.
