Wilhelmshaven

Saga Sapphire blog - Captains' blogs

9th February, 2019

The voyage round from Hamburg was all pilotage as we have to go down the river Elbe, drop the pilot and then head west along the coast for 15 miles to pick up the Jade/Weser Pilot for Wilhelmshaven. Again, the weather was bad enough for Pilotage to be suspended and the pilot again embarked by helicopter at 0130 on the 9th.

We had two tugs for arrival as the wind was around force 7/8 and we had to go through the locks into the inner harbour. Wilhelmshaven is still an active navy port and has a German navy museum.

The Saga Sapphire was the first cruise ship on a scheduled call into this port and the local dignitaries came on for a plaque exchange ceremony. We also featured in the local press.

There was a tour to the Meyer Werft shipyard to see the progress of the Spirit of Discovery and many came back expressing surprise at how quickly it was being built and there was a buzz of excitement!

Also tours went to Bremen, 16th Century Castle Godens and the navy museum.

We had 2 tugs again for departure as the wind was gusting up to 45 knots and the entry into the lock was “exciting”!

We set sail for Ijmuiden dropping the pilot by helicopter at around 2100.
