Gibraltar

Saga Sapphire blog - Captains' blogs

2nd April, 2019

I was checking my emails, when I heard “bing bong” followed by “Good morning Captain here”, Oops!! We now are alongside I thought to myself. It’s a routine for the Captain to make announcement once the ship is already alongside and also a sign that crew wish to go ashore can now go out to unwind a bit & take a fresh air or even look for a good wifi signal to call home.

And here we are, docked, once again, in Gibraltar. It’s Tuesday the 2nd of April 2019 and if it wasn’t for the 21:30 all on-board and, well, of course my duties, I wouldn’t think twice to stay a bit longer!!! I lost count of the number of times I have been here… yet I get confused: I can hear some people speaking Spanish as well as many speaking English.

There is something very exotic about this place, must be the monkeys I once saw climbing on the roof of a car while strolling off the beaten track on my way up the mountain. For one moment I thought I was in the Jungle Book, then a car blowing horn behind me ‘Buenas Dias Senor’. The steep route made me rather hungry! ‘Mmmmmhhhh I think my tummy is asking for burger…burger… so I looked for a snack house.

‘Hola, senor, que queres?’ I stopped for a moment then the lad told me Good afternoon Sir! “Good he speaks English I told to myself” Could I have burger & a soda please? ‘Sure sir, have you been up the Rock?’ the lad asked. ‘Never made it that far, but I know I will be back again, next time maybe. While enjoying my burger I remember I am about to run out of my favourite after shave. For sure Boots will have it! Or would it be cheaper in Marks and Sparks? Time is running out, I need to get the stuff I need & I shall go back on duty but not before I spend all my Gibraltar pounds, I can’t use them on board.

I head back promising myself I will try to escort a tour to the Rock next time, or ride a cable car from the ground level to the top of the Rock, where I can view the beauty of Gibraltar. I am grateful I have visited this country again, I had a great few hours ashore and this is the advantage of being on sea I can visit different places for free!
