Funchal, Madeira

Saga Sapphire blog - Captains' blogs

14th January, 2015

Having only been away for 2 weeks, we approached Funchal in the dark and it reminded me of New Year’s Eve with the spectacular fireworks display. But this morning we were the only cruise ship in the bay so the scene was a little more tranquil. We berthed alongside on the Breakwater and were all fast by 0745.

Jacquie and Laura sent off five exciting tours this morning. First was the exciting 4WD Safari which took passengers off road through some of Madeira’s hidden valleys and mountain roads; the 8 hour Madeira Island Delight; the very active Levada Walk; the relaxing Scenic Madeira and the colourful Botanical Gardens & Monte. In the afternoon 21 intrepid guests set forth on an exciting Rib Adventure.

We set off at 1645 and I asked my Chief Officer, Dan Wright, to do the honours and take the ship away. He is a very competent shiphandler and did well to take the ship away under the watchful eye of all our passengers. We were soon steaming south towards the Canary Islands.

This evening’s entertainment was from the high energy Explosive Singers and Dancers performing great hits from the Drifters entitled “Come Over to my Place. Resty was the late night cabaret, followed by the fantastic duo of Lily and Zoltan who played requests and music to dance to.
