Eidfjord

After wonderful stay in Ulvik we heaved anchor at 6:00pm on 5th June, in order to make a leisurely evening transit to the berth in Eidfjord. I say evening, but it was bright daylight with calm seas and clear sunny skies. A gentle sail through spectacular fjord land views. At 9:00pm we were berthed in Eidfjord. This village lies on the edge of Hardangervidda, Europe’s largest mountain plateau. This plateau is above the treeline. Reindeer over winter in the eastern part and nibble on the lichen which grows on the rocks in the west on their way to their breeding grounds, to return east again after the rutting season. Eidfjord is situated in a spectacular setting and offers beautiful walks around this village.

The tours started in the morning. These were.

Waterfalls and waffles. This tour offers stunning views and a taste of the national favourite delicacy The views include the Hardanger Mountain Plateau, Halne Mountain Lodge, Mabodalen Valley, Voringsfossen Waterfalls, Hardangerjokul glacier and views of the Hardangerfjord.

Hardanger Nature Centre. This tour takes passengers to the Hardangervidda Nature Centre, a living activity centre opened in 1995. It offers exhibitions of local wildlife and a film taking one on a journey past fjords, mountains and waterfalls. The tour continues to Mabodal Valley to view the Sissendammen viewpoint overlooking one of the four dams supplying the nearby Sima Hydroelectric plant, the Hardangerjokul glacier and the Voringfossen waterfalls.

For the passengers who wanted to discover the village and surroundings independently the ship was berthed near the village centre a very short walk away.

Eidfjord

For those passengers on board the cruise staff had organised and hosted different activities and the surroundings offered spectacular views.

All on board was at 3:00am the next morning so lots of time to enjoy the long day and a relaxing evening on the ship. Because of our long stay we had some extra activities. At 2:45 pm there was an exclusive on board concert and an evening tour attending the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra. The evening for the passengers not on this evening tour started with cocktail hour in the Cooper’s Bar and early evening music for listening and dancing in the drawing Room, followed by dinner. After dinner the Britannia Lounge hosted music for dancing followed by a performance of Explosive Productions presenting their show “Music Legends” a tribute to the to the stars, including Tina Turner, Roy Orbison, Dolly Parton, Elvis Presley, Shirley Bassey and Elton John. This was followed by music for listening and dancing with the “You and Me Duo” in the Drawing Room and Late Night Musical melodies with Lloyd Hulme at the piano in the Cooper’s Bar.
