Dover

Saga Sapphire blog - Captains' blogs

11th September, 2012

Well once again we docked in a sunny Dover, for the fourth consecutive embarkation day in a row. Since it was turnaround day, it was morning of fond farewells. There was also many details exchanged as we said goodbye to some old and many new found friends. The ship was then prepared and made ready for another great cruise, this time to see the ‘Best of the Baltics’. As we sailed out of port there were plenty of excited faces enjoying the lovely weather.

Obviously because the Sapphire is a new addition to the Saga Fleet, the turnout for the first of many guided tours was extensive. Led by Resty and Fernando, guests got to see all of the well-appointed facilities and familiarise themselves with the ships layout. Another highlight of embarkation day was the ‘Welcome Aboard Buffet’. Held in the Britannia Lounge, this was the first chance to sample some of the culinary delights prepared by Chef John and his talented team. It was a splendid affair to rival the best high tea that London had to offer.

We carried out our lifeboat drill at 1530 and once complete, we were all ready to sail.

For something completely different there was ‘Sailaway Party’ on the back deck. With musical accompaniment provided by our on board duo ‘Perfect Mood’, it was a great way to meet some new friends or delight in the views of the wondrous ‘White Cliffs’ and the imperious ‘Dover Castle’.

Our manoeuvre today was to back out, move astern out of the western entrance, turn north, and head towards Skagen up the North Sea.

The Flanagan Trio were downstairs in the main lounge tonight. They opened up with delightful program featuring works from Chopin, right through Gershwin, and it is pleasure to have such accomplished musical consort on this classically themed cruise. Whilst in the Drawing Room, guests were entertained by the amazing Martin Orbidans as he tinkled the ivories of the grand, and had everybody in hysterics with his own blend of comedy and vocals. If music was not your thing there was always the opportunity to watch the new movie ‘Being Flynn’ on our big screen in the ‘Academy’.
