Saga Pearl II blog - Captains' blogs
8th January, 2018
Well after 3 days of an exciting cruise finale, including a special surprise ‘guest act’ interrupting the Captain’s farewell cocktail party which delighted our passengers, we eventually arrived back in Southampton. Our arrival provided us with a stark reminder of the delightful British weather we had been fortunate enough to miss during our 24 days away . . .
Passengers, bags, food and fuel were refreshed and replenished respectively, before we set off to sea again in the evening of the 8th January. This time it was to discover the Traditions of the Canaries & Africa. Sounds simple enough, but to get down to those latitudes means dodging those north Atlantic depressions which they have bizarrely started calling names like Doris & Ethel. One of them, a particularly ferocious looking Aunty Mabel, (or something like that) seemed intent on rendezvousing with us enroute to Madeira. As a result I decided to duck into the pleasant and little-visited Spanish port of Aviles, in Asturias, so that we could relax in a sheltered harbour whilst the bad weather passed, before continuing south.
