Admire Cologne’s UNESCO-listed Gothic cathedral, which took over 600 years to build, take a cable car up to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress on an optional excursion in Koblenz and visit Rüdesheim, in the north-west corner of Germany’s Rheingau wine-producing region. The historic towers of Boppard provide an atmospheric setting for an optional wine tasting session and you can enjoy further optional wine tasting in Cochem, overlooked by Reichsburg Castle, and Traben-Trarbach. Embark on an included tour of Germany’s oldest city, Trier, founded in 16BC by Emperor Augustus and see the Porta Nigra, one of the best-preserved Roman city gates in the world. Day 1 UK to Amsterdam

Travel to Amsterdam (a journey from Calais of approximately four and a half hours) and embark Spirit of the Rhine.

Enjoy a welcome drink reception and dinner on board as your ship remains moored here overnight.

Day 2 Amsterdam 🎧

The Dutch capital is rightly popular for its friendly welcome, picturesque canals, world-class museums and galleries, and laid-back cafes and bars.

This morning perhaps enjoy the local food and culture on an included culinary walking tour with a guide. You’ll take a tram to Central Station from where you’ll begin a walking tour of the Dutch capital while tasting local delicacies including herring, cheese and croquettes along the way. Alternatively, you could join an included tour of Amsterdam by coach and see the Royal Palace on Dam Square, the floating flower market, the Central Railway Station, which is built on thousands of wooden piles, and the grand 19th-century Rijksmuseum. Afterwards, enjoy a canal cruise to see the city centre with its historic bridges and gabled houses and view such treasures as the famous Skinny Bridge, the Montelbaanstoren tower and the Jewish Quarter.

Spirit of the Rhine sets sail at lunchtime to spend the rest of the day and night cruising towards Cologne.

Day 3 Cologne 🎧

Arrive at lunchtime in Cologne, Germany's cultural capital.

Enjoy an afternoon of exploring during an optional city tour or by using our state-of-the-art interactive map – don't miss the vast Gothic cathedral, started in 1248 to house the relics of the three Magi but not finally completed until 1880! You can see the shrine to Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar – now among the patron saints of Cologne – behind the high altar.

Depart later this evening and cruise overnight towards Koblenz.

Day 4 Koblenz to Rüdesheim 🎧

Discover the riverside promenade and several historic churches, all set beneath the Festung Ehrenbreitstein citadel on top of the hill, which you may choose to visit on an optional excursion this morning. Early this afternoon your cruise continues through the UNESCO-listed Middle Rhine to the wine town of Rüdesheim, passing the fabled Lorelei Rock en route.

This evening, enjoy an included wine tasting at a family owned winery in Rüdesheim.

Day 5 Rüdesheim to Boppard 🎧

This morning an optional excursion visits Siegfried’s Museum of Mechanical Music where over 350 self-playing instruments are displayed. Set sail over lunch, arriving in Boppard this afternoon where you may like to join an optional wine tasting in one of Boppard’s historic towers.

Day 6 Boppard to Cochem 🎧

Cochem with the imperial Castle

Depart early this morning to arrive in Cochem this afternoon.

With the romantic backdrop of neo-Gothic Reichsburg Castle, which sits atop a hill cloaked entirely in vines, Cochem is understandably one of the most visited places on the Moselle River. This afternoon an optional excursion visits the castle, which has maintained the original 11th-century keep. The excursion will also visit a local vineyard for a wine tasting. Another optional tour explores the town by land train.

Day 7 Traben-Trarbach to Bernkastel-Kues 🎧

Arrive in Traben-Trarbach in the early hours of this morning.

These twin villages straddle the Moselle and are known as the 'capitals' of the wine region, they are home to many art nouveau buildings. An optional wine tasting at a vineyard is available this morning. Continue to Bernkastel-Kues this afternoon where you can join an optional trip on the panorama train.

Day 8 Trier 🎧

Spend the day in Germany’s oldest city, Trier, founded in 16BC by Emperor Augustus.

Trier lies in the heart of Germany’s oldest wine region, the Moselle, which is home to many fine white wines and its location close to the steep banks of the Moselle River was the location the Romans first chose to plant their vines. Trier retains many relics of its illustrious past, such as the Porta Nigra, one of the best-preserved Roman city gates in the world which you will see during an included tour this morning. This afternoon there is an optional wine tasting excursion.

Enjoy the morning at leisure in the historic village of Piesport before spending the rest of the day cruising to Winningen, arriving late this evening.

Day 10 Winningen to Koblenz to Andernach 🎧

Take an optional tour of a local vineyard this morning before cruising to Koblenz, at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle. Perhaps spend the afternoon exploring Ehrenbreitstein Fortress on an optional excursion which also includes a walking tour of the city.

Depart for Andernach this evening and moor here overnight.

Look forward to an included morning walking tour of Bonn to see sights such as the Electoral Palace, the baroque City Hall, and Beethoven's former home, now a museum dedicated to his life and work.

This afternoon Spirit of the Rhine will cruise to Düssedorf, arriving early this evening.

Day 13 Düsseldorf to Utrecht 🎧

Embark on an included morning tour of Düsseldorf’s famous Old Town – a square kilometre full of churches, art and more than 250 pubs, bars, restaurants and cafes in the heart of the city. Join a guide on a stroll through the backstreets and discover why the Gothic St. Lambertus church has a twisted tower. The Burgplatz (square) with the Schlossturm (palace tower) holds great char and from here, it's a stone's throw to the Rhine embankment promenade which offers a panoramic view of Düsseldorf's skyline and the Oberkassel Rhine banks.

Set sail for Utrecht this afternoon and arrive late this evening.

Day 14 Utrecht to Amsterdam 🎧

This morning you’ll have time to explore Utrecht at leisure, perhaps wander through the medieval heart of the city with its 112-metre high Domtoren tower or visit one of the city’s museums. The Botanical Gardens are also well renowned. This afternoon you may like to join an optional trip into the scenic Hoge Veluwe National Park which is home to the acclaimed Kroller-Muller Museum.

Before dinner return to your ship and set sail for the final time, cruising to arrive in Amsterdam your ship will moor overnight.

Day 15 Amsterdam to UK

Disembark Spirit of the Rhine after breakfast for your return journey to the UK.

Cologne city tour

Discover the city’s historic attractions on this optional excursion which begins with a scenic coach trip in the company of a knowledgeable guide who will point out the highlights. See the pretty Altstadt, or old town, which has been sensitively restored to it's pre-World War II glory, the awe-inspiring towers of Gross St Martin, the elaborate town hall and mighty Gothic cathedral. Then set off on foot to get a closer look as you stroll along the cobbled lanes and lively squares, such as the Alter Markt.

Koblenz and Ehrenbreitstein Fortress

Immortalised by Byron and Herman Melville, lofty fortifications have glowered over Koblenz since 1,000AD and changed faces over the centuries. The Prussians constructed Festung Ehrenbreitstein in the early 19th century, when Rhineland became a Prussian province. Despite being Europe’s second largest fortress, after Gibraltar, it played no part in either WWI or WWII. Enjoy a panoramic cable car ride from Koblenz up to the fortress, the views are astounding and you’ll learn about the history of the site. There will be a guided walk around the historic city of Koblenz, and you can admire the elegant architecture.

Siegfrieds Museum of Mechanical Music

Siegfried Wendel’s eccentric collection of 350 self-playing instruments is a veritable treat for eyes and ears. In this whimsical museum you’ll find a fantastical, nostalgic and joyous cacophony of beautiful music boxes, barrel organs, hand-cranked carnival machines and early jukeboxes, all in full working order. High points include the ‘Puppet Orchestrion’, a huge cabinet containing puppet musicians (1888) and the later ‘Phonoliszt Violina’ a blend of piano and violins that plays in perfect harmony.

Boppard wine tasting

Sniff the bouquet of local wines in one of the most delightful parts of the Rhine Gorge. Boppard, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002, is a classic Rhineland wine town where the pretty waterfront is overlooked by wooded gorges and rolling vineyards. The cobbled streets are home to extensive Roman remains, medieval fortifications and half-timbered buildings. Your wine tasting takes place in one of Boppard’s historic towers, which has been converted into a winery – a word of warning, there are nearly 40 steps to climb to the tasting room. Sample four wines and a liqueur, each wine will be introduced by your host. If you wish, you will be able to purchase wine to take home with you.

Cochem, Reichsburg Castle and Wine tasting

Visit fairy-tale Reichsburg Castle to learn about its colourful history and see magnificent views of the Moselle. Enjoy a guided tour of the castle, which was rescued and restored in the 19th century in neo-Gothic style. Today it is a fabulous showcase for Renaissance and baroque furniture. Later head to a local vineyard and winery for an introductory talk, and a tasting of four regional white Rieslings. There'll be the chance to purchase some wine before returning to the ship.

Cochem Noddy Train

From the pier you'll be met by the Cochem land train, which will take you on a 25-minute guided tour around the town. Starting at the old Mosel Bridge, you'll be taken through the old town and will then cross the new bridge into the Cond district, from where you'll have great views of Cochem and Reichsburg. The land train then takes you to the Moselstrabe and alongside the vineyards which ascend up the valley. After your sightseeing tour you'll have some free time to spend in Cochem, before being collected by the land train and taken back to the ship.

Traben-Trarbach wine cellars

Head underground for a tour of Traben-Trarbach’s historic wine cellars, some of which date back to the 16th century. Learn more about the town’s traditions of viticulture and the ancient techniques used to produce one of the finest wines in the world, the Riesling. Naturally your tour includes a tasting of the local produce.

Trier wine tasting

The old winery, Vereinigte Hospitien, still features one of the original Roman walls, while the wine cellar of the renowned producer Bischoefliche Weingueter is located under the pedestrianised area of the city centre. Look forward to a wine tasting.

Hoge Veluwe National Park and Kroller-Muller Museum

Look forward to spending time in the Kroller-Muller Museum, set in the beautiful Hoge Veluwe National Park, which boasts scenic heaths, sand dunes and woodland. The museum itself is home to a large collection of Van Gogh pieces while the surrounding grounds also contain the largest sculpture park in Europe.
