Visit Rüdesheim, in the north-west corner of Germany’s Rheingau wine-producing region, before arriving at the classic Rhineland wine town of Boppard whose historic towers provide an atmospheric setting for an optional wine tasting session. Explore Cochem, overlooked by Reichsburg Castle, and enjoy an included vineyard visit and wine tasting in Traben-Trarbach. A two-night mooring in Germany’s oldest city, Trier, founded in 16BC by Emperor Augustus gives you time to see the Porta Nigra, one of the best-preserved Roman city gates in the world and perhaps pay a visit to the wine cellar of the renowned producer Bischoefliche Weingueter, which is located under the pedestrianised area of the city centre.

Day 1 UK to Amsterdam

Travel to Amsterdam (a journey from Calais of approximately four and a half hours) and embark Spirit of the Rhine.

Enjoy a welcome drink reception and dinner on board as your ship remains moored here overnight.

Day 2 Amsterdam 🎧

The Dutch capital is rightly popular for its friendly welcome, picturesque canals, world-class museums and galleries, and laid-back cafes and bars.

This morning perhaps enjoy the local food and culture on an included culinary walking tour with a guide. You’ll take a tram to Central Station from where you’ll begin a walking tour of the Dutch capital while tasting local delicacies including herring, cheese and croquettes along the way. Alternatively, you could join an included tour of Amsterdam by coach and see the Royal Palace on Dam Square, the floating flower market, the Central Railway Station, which is built on thousands of wooden piles, and the grand 19th-century Rijksmuseum. Afterwards, enjoy a canal cruise to see the city centre with its historic bridges and gabled houses and view such treasures as the famous Skinny Bridge, the Montelbaanstoren tower and the Jewish Quarter.

Spirit of the Rhine sets sail at lunchtime to spend the rest of the day and night cruising towards Cologne.

Day 3 Cologne 🎧

Arrive at lunchtime in Cologne, Germany's cultural capital.

Enjoy an afternoon of exploring during an optional city tour or by using our state-of-the-art interactive map – don't miss the vast Gothic cathedral, started in 1248 to house the relics of the three Magi but not finally completed until 1880! You can see the shrine to Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar – now among the patron saints of Cologne – behind the high altar.

Depart later this evening and cruise overnight towards Bonn.

Day 4 Bonn to Koblenz 🎧

This morning you’ll wake up in Bonn, having arrived in the early hours.

Join an optional walking tour to see sights such as the Electoral Palace, the baroque City Hall, and Beethoven's former home, now a museum dedicated to his life and work.

This afternoon Spirit of the Rhine will cruise to Koblenz, at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle, arriving early this evening.

Day 5 Koblenz to Rüdesheim 🎧

Discover the riverside promenade and several historic churches, all set beneath the Festung Ehrenbreitstein citadel on top of the hill, which you may choose to visit on an optional excursion this morning. Early this afternoon your cruise continues through the UNESCO-listed Middle Rhine to the wine town of Rüdesheim, passing the fabled Lorelei Rock en route.

This evening, enjoy an included wine tasting at a family owned winery in Rüdesheim.

Day 6 Rüdesheim to Boppard 🎧

This morning an optional excursion visits Siegfried’s Museum of Mechanical Music where over 350 self-playing instruments are displayed. Set sail over lunch, arriving in Boppard this afternoon. A choice of optional excursions include a wine tasting in one of Boppard’s historic towers or a guided tour of Rheinfels Castle.

Day 7 Boppard to Cochem 🎧

Cochem with the imperial Castle

Depart early this morning to arrive in Cochem this afternoon.

With the romantic backdrop of neo-Gothic Reichsburg Castle, which sits atop a hill cloaked entirely in vines, Cochem is understandably one of the most visited places on the Moselle River. This afternoon an optional excursion visits the castle, which has maintained the original 11th-century keep. The excursion will also visit a local vineyard for a wine tasting. Another optional tour explores the town by land train.

Day 8 Cochem to Traben-Trarbach

Set off early and cruise through the morning to the twin villages of Traben-Trarbach which straddle the Moselle. Known as the 'capitals' of the wine region, they are home to many art nouveau buildings. Enjoy an included wine tasting at a vineyard this afternoon.

Day 11 Piesport to Trier

Porta Nigra in Trier

Cruise through the morning to arrive this afternoon in Germany’s oldest city, Trier, founded in 16BC by Emperor Augustus.

Trier lies in the heart of Germany’s oldest wine region, the Moselle, which is home to many fine white wines and its location close to the steep banks of the Moselle River was the location the Romans first chose to plant their vines. Trier retains many relics of its illustrious past, such as the Porta Nigra, one of the best-preserved Roman city gates in the world. The old winery, Vereinigte Hospitien, still features one of the original Roman walls, while the wine cellar of the renowned producer Bischoefliche Weingueter is located under the pedestrianised area of the city centre.

Enjoy an included morning tour to see the Roman city gateway, Porta Nigra, and the cathedral, the oldest Bishop’s church in Germany which still serves its original purpose as a place of worship.

Cologne city tour

Discover the city’s historic attractions on this optional excursion which begins with a scenic coach trip in the company of a knowledgeable guide who will point out the highlights. See the pretty Altstadt, or old town, which has been sensitively restored to it's pre-World War II glory, the awe-inspiring towers of Gross St Martin, the elaborate town hall and mighty Gothic cathedral. Then set off on foot to get a closer look as you stroll along the cobbled lanes and lively squares, such as the Alter Markt.

Bonn: Birthplace of Beethoven

The centre of Bonn has more than 2,000 years of history. This tour will encompass some of the spectacular highlights of this town, visiting such places as the Beethoven monument, the Romanesque Minster Cathedral, the University of Bonn, which was formerly the Electoral Palace – with its elegant Hofgarten – and the grand City Hall. The tour takes you to the banks of the Rhine near the Bonn Opera House to see the imposing view of Germany‘s oldest nature park, Siebengebirge and seven hills.

Koblenz and Ehrenbreitstein Fortress

Immortalised by Byron and Herman Melville, lofty fortifications have glowered over Koblenz since 1,000AD and changed faces over the centuries. The Prussians constructed Festung Ehrenbreitstein in the early 19th century, when Rhineland became a Prussian province. Despite being Europe’s second largest fortress, after Gibraltar, it played no part in either WWI or WWII. Enjoy a panoramic cable car ride from Koblenz up to the fortress, the views are astounding and you’ll learn about the history of the site. There will be a guided walk around the historic city of Koblenz, and you can admire the elegant architecture.

Siegfrieds Museum of Mechanical Music

Siegfried Wendel’s eccentric collection of 350 self-playing instruments is a veritable treat for eyes and ears. In this whimsical museum you’ll find a fantastical, nostalgic and joyous cacophony of beautiful music boxes, barrel organs, hand-cranked carnival machines and early jukeboxes, all in full working order. High points include the ‘Puppet Orchestrion’, a huge cabinet containing puppet musicians (1888) and the later ‘Phonoliszt Violina’ a blend of piano and violins that plays in perfect harmony.

Rheinfels Castle and St Goar

Journey along the banks of the Rhine to the ruins of Rheinfels Castle, which has a hilltop setting. Explore the vast site, said to be the largest castle and fortress ruins on the Middle Rhine, during a guided tour. The fortress was built under the orders of Count Diether V.von Katzenelnbogen in 1245. You’ll then walk down the hill to the winegrowing village of St Goar for another guided tour.

Boppard wine tasting

Sniff the bouquet of local wines in one of the most delightful parts of the Rhine Gorge. Boppard, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002, is a classic Rhineland wine town where the pretty waterfront is overlooked by wooded gorges and rolling vineyards. The cobbled streets are home to extensive Roman remains, medieval fortifications and half-timbered buildings. Your wine tasting takes place in one of Boppard’s historic towers, which has been converted into a winery – a word of warning, there are nearly 40 steps to climb to the tasting room. Sample four wines and a liqueur, each wine will be introduced by your host. If you wish, you will be able to purchase wine to take home with you.

Cochem, Reichsburg Castle and Wine tasting

Visit fairy-tale Reichsburg Castle to learn about its colourful history and see magnificent views of the Moselle. Enjoy a guided tour of the castle, which was rescued and restored in the 19th century in neo-Gothic style. Today it is a fabulous showcase for Renaissance and baroque furniture. Later head to a local vineyard and winery for an introductory talk, and a tasting of four regional white Rieslings. There'll be the chance to purchase some wine before returning to the ship.

Cochem Noddy Train

From the pier you'll be met by the Cochem land train, which will take you on a 25-minute guided tour around the town. Starting at the old Mosel Bridge, you'll be taken through the old town and will then cross the new bridge into the Cond district, from where you'll have great views of Cochem and Reichsburg. The land train then takes you to the Moselstrabe and alongside the vineyards which ascend up the valley. After your sightseeing tour you'll have some free time to spend in Cochem, before being collected by the land train and taken back to the ship.
