Head to Theaterplatz square in the old quarter, to admire the fine neo-classical theatre, arcade and fountains. You can't miss the enormous Renaissance Johannisburg Palace. It's a vast complex, with four wings and two towers, built from 1605 to 1614 around the keep of the original medieval castle, which is the fifth tower. There's also a replica of a Roman villa in Pompeii – the Pompejanum – commissioned by King Ludwig I and built in the years between 1840-1848 to discover. Best known for the production of Reisling, the town is surrounded by a medieval wall and defence towers with the dramatic Schönburg Castle perched high above it. It was built in the 12th century, by the Dukes of Schönburg who ruled Oberwesel and collected customs fees from ships passing through on the Rhine. The castle was burned down in 1689 and remained in ruins for 200 years before it was bought and restored by a German-American family. There is now a hotel and restaurant within the castle.
