It remained the seat of the German federal government until as recently as 1999. Enjoy exploring independently, to see magnificent baroque palaces and historic buildings from the 16th century when the powerful elite of Cologne chose to reside here. It's also home to some of the country's finest art at the impressive Museum of Art and Federal Art Gallery. Alternatively, join an optional city walking tour with a local guide which includes a visit to the birthplace of Ludwig van Beethoven, now a museum. Early this evening your ship sails towards Winningen.

Day 4 Zell to Bernkastel

Bernkastel Kues

Enjoy views of the old walls and gabled houses of this famous wine town from the ship, before sailing to the pretty town of Bernkastel-Kues after breakfast. Developed on the right bank of the Moselle in the Middle Ages, Bernkastel, or 'bear castle' merged with the village of Kues, on the left bank, in 1905. Colourful, half-timbered houses line the medieval market square while the ruined 13th-century Castle of Landshut overlooks the town. Your ship arrives here mid afternoon and moors here for the night.

Day 5 Bernkastel to Trier

Depart Bernkastel early this morning and sail to Trier. Spend an afternoon in Germany’s oldest city, Trier, founded in 16BC by Emperor Augustus. A Roman colony from the 1st century AD and then a great trading centre, by the end of the 3rd century, it had become known as the 'second Rome'. Many important Roman buildings have been preserved in Trier, as you'll discover on an included tour to see the Roman city gateway, Porta Nigra, and the cathedral. Moor here overnight.
