From here, perhaps visit iconic Pulpit Rock, a sheer cliff which rises almost 2000 feet above Lysefjorden.

Set between Bergen and Stavanger, the bustling maritime town of Haugesund was once a centre for herring fishing and now prospers from the wealth of North Sea oil. It is set in a region of outstanding natural beauty comprising moors, waterfalls and verdant mountains. This is the homeland of the Viking Kings, who ruled for 500 years. Norway’s founder, Harold Fairhair, is supposedly buried in Haugesund on a site marked by a national monument commemorating the unification of Norway. From here, you can head to Langfoss Waterfall to see the roaring cataracts.

Perhaps head to Langfoss Waterfall where roaring cataracts tumble 2,000 feet over a cliff face towards the Akra Fjord.

The idyllic village of Flåm is hidden away at the end of the Aurlandsfjord, an arm of the Sognefjord. Fishing, kayaking, cycling and hiking amid the surrounding mountain and fjords are popular pastimes. The biggest draw though is the historic Flåm railway, which winds up from the fjord through the Flåm Valley for over 10 miles to Myrdal station. It is dubbed ‘the world’s most beautiful train journey’ as it passes high above deep ravines, snakes through mountain tunnels and passes the tumultuous Kjosfossen falls.

Combine a journey along the Flåm Railway with a downhill hike to fully appreciate the natural beauty of the Sognefjord region or join a boat trip to see the dramatic fjord scenery of the UNESCO-listed Naerøyfjord.
