Nagoya, Japan

Arrive early morning. Depart late afternoon.

After much of the city was destroyed in World War II air raids, Nagoya has been rebuilt, and today, is Japan’s third largest city. Despite the city’s manufacturing roots, you’ll find ample parks and green spaces, impressive temples and fantastic shopping opportunities. The birthplace of Toyota, car buffs will love the Toyota Techno Museum, and don’t miss Nagoya Castle. Close to the River Ikuta lies Sannomiya, the city’s main shopping area which is also home to the early Ikuta Shrine. Kobe is also the gateway port to Osaka, a city which commands your attention with its staggering skyline, shopping arcades, monuments and museums. Virtually flattened during World War II, Osaka has rebuilt itself with modernistic buildings, such as the Umeda Sky Building and Imperial Hotel, but has ensured traditional Japanese buildings, such as the Shitennoji Temple, still have a place.

At the heart of the city lies the Hiroshima Peace Memorial or the ‘Atomic Bomb Dome’ – a building that remained standing after the explosion. It has been preserved as a poignant reminder of the war and is also a UNESCO World heritage Site. Close by you will find other memorials including the Flame of Peace, the Peace Bell as well as the Peace Memorial Museum. Explore the city, perhaps trying Okonomiyaki – a crepe-like base topped with bean sprouts, noodles and more, which helped to sustain the people of Hiroshima after the events of 1945.
