Embrace the opportunity to try all kinds of new activities on this energising cruise to the subtropical Canaries. Take a new approach to sightseeing and ride a 1930s tram around Lisbon, barter in the Suk-al-Had market in Agadir where the air is heavy with the smell of spices, or visit the mummies in Tenerife’s Museum of Nature and Man. Plant lovers can take off on a 4x4 adventure to Morocco’s aptly named Paradise Valley.

Thrill seekers can go off-road in a jeep on the volcanic island of Lanzarote to cross lava fields, see plantations of prickly pears and marvel at the drama of the arid scenery. Walkers can cover a scenic stretch of the Orotava Valley in Tenerife, stopping en-route for refreshments in a charming 18th-Century mansion, or take a trek with a stop for tapas tasting in Gran Canaria.

Water babies can learn the basics of the gentle sport of paddleboarding, remember the sea is at its warmest at this time of year. For good fun times, what better than to hop on an e-bike and take the strain out of uphill cycling on a guided tour of hilly Funchal that won’t leave you puffed. Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon is a clash of traditional aesthetic with contemporary lifestyle. Explore the trendy Alfama district as you climb the hill to the castle, passing Se Cathedral, the National Pantheon and St Anthony’s Church. Or for a better view of the city from above scale the steep steps of the Cristo Rei. A more relaxed tour of the city’s historic districts is available if you board the 1930’s number 28 tram, or you could head to the beach where surfers cut foamy ribbons out of the massive swells that sweep the Atlantic.

Agadir, Morocco

Agadir, Morocco

Arrive 0800. Depart 1700.

Agadir is a modern city with an underbelly of old-world charm. Here, you can loose yourself in Suq al-Had market where the air is thick with the scent of spice or stretch your legs on a long walk to the Agadir Kasbah, originally built in the 1500s but partially destroyed in the 1960s earthquake. Alternatively, take a jeep tour to Paradise Valley to see endangered local flora in its native habitat and tour a botanic garden.

Arrecife, Lanzarote

Arrecife, Lanzarote

Arrive 0900. Depart 1700.

Step ashore in Arrecife, the capital of Lanzarote. Here, you can explore the castles of San Gabriel and San Jose, built to guard the natural harbour against roving pirates or wonder through El Charco, the city’s picturesque hub. If you are after a more exciting activity during your stay discover the island’s wild interior on an off-road Lanzarote adventure.

Las Palmas, Gran Canaria

Las Palmas, Gran Canaria

Arrive 0800. Depart 2200.

Las Palmas has plenty to keep you busy. You can walk through the town in the footsteps of Christopher Colombus, explore the many art galleries of Vegueta and stroll through the historic neighbourhood of La Isleta. Alternatively, challenge yourself with a hike to the top of the 200-metre volcanic crater of Caldera de Bandama. Also, with the sea an ever-present element, water sports are all the rage and a placid introduction to fun on the waves is the newly created sport of paddleboarding.

Santa Cruz, Tenerife

Santa Cruz, Tenerife

Arrive 0800. Depart 2200.

Santa Cruz is the capital of the Canary Islands and considered one of the most important ports of the Atlantic. Representative of the city’s maritime heritage is the sail design of the modern Auditorio de Tenerife, while in the Museum of Nature and Man you can find artefacts and mummies of the Guanche people who first settled the site 2,000 years ago. You can also embark on a coastal walk to San Pedro and visit the colonial mansion of Abaco; a window on the history of the island with daily displays of Canarian folklore.

Santa Cruz, La Palma

Santa Cruz, La Palma

Arrive 0800. Depart 1300.

Santa Cruz de La Palma, with its colourful patchwork of balconied homes, strung along the azure Atlantic, is a gateway to hiking paradise. Clothed in emerald forests and pimpled with volcanic cones, the island has over 600 miles of marked footpaths to follow, each delivering its own stunning panoramas of sea and verdant, vertiginous extinct volcanoes.

Funchal, Madeira

Funchal, Madeira

Arrive 0800. Depart 1500.

Enjoy one of the most memorable approaches in the world, as you sail into Funchal, the capital of Madeira. This tiny Portuguese outpost, in the middle of the Atlantic, is a botanical garden both ordered and wild, with a capital city that is like a little slice of Lisbon. The island is also famous for its fortified wines and fine foods, the former you can sample at Pereira D’Oliveira. You can also enjoy a tour of the mouth-watering food markets of Funchal and learn to create local dishes on a Madeiran cooking experience. If you want to see the island by two wheels, join a guided e-bike tour which takes all the strain out of uphill journeys!

Tales of rowing from Andrew
Talks from triple Olympic gold medallist Andrew Triggs Hodge.

A little more about Andrew…

Having grown up in Yorkshire where there weren’t many opportunities to row, Andrew was more used to coming last in compulsory cross country running. It wasn’t until a friend at University suggested that he should try the social sport of rowing that Andrew discovered his rowing abilities. This pivotal moment and the following 18 years gave way to three Olympic Gold Medals, four World Championship Golds, and a world record.  Not bad for the kid who was always picked last in PE!

All excursions mentioned are optional, at an additional cost, and are subject to availability and change. Some of the highlights detailed may only be seen on optional excursions or by exploring independently.

Explore Ashore

Plan your excursions and time ashore with our expert concierge team on board. Here's some inspiration for this cruise...

Back to nature

Walk La Rambla de Castro, a majestic valley in Tenerife to see native endangered species of palms, euphorbia, spurges and dragon trees in their natural habitat. En route you’ll see a fortress, a water-lifting station and assorted Canarian casas and haciendas, and we’ll take the strain by driving you to the start so the ramble is mostly downhill!

Paradise Regained

Hop into a 4x4 for a joyous ride through palm groves and into the mountains to the aptly named Paradise Valley. Have your camera at the ready as the scenery is gorgeous, all turquoise pools and streams, yellow rock and lush greenery. Stop en-route for Moroccan tea, with bread, olives and local honey and learn more about the flora and fauna at a botanic garden.

Take five in Agadir

While exploring Agadir, make time for a peaceful stroll in the Jardin de Olhão, a cool green space in the heart of the city created in 1992. Moorish in style, with gravel and wooden walkways, tropical plantings and ornate Berber walls, it also houses a small but fascinating museum devoted to the 1960 earthquake, which our Explore Ashore experts can point you towards.
