Moor in the Turkish port of Kepez, on the southern edge of Canakkale, a vibrant city best explored on foot. Take a stroll along the waterfront, and look out for a replica of the iconic Trojan horse, used in the 2004 movie starring Brad Pitt. Canakkale is the gateway to the ancient ruins of Troy, and the historic peninsula of Gallipoli where one of the most epic battles of WWI is remembered in moving memorials.

Piraeus has been the main Athenian port since antiquity, as Athens is the capital of the wealthy Attica region as well as the country. The city sprawls around a rocky hill called the Acropolis, crowned by the Parthenon Temple dedicated to the city’s patron, the ancient goddess, Athena. The amazingly well-preserved Theatre of Dionysus Eleuthereus, also on the hill, is a 4th-century BC auditorium, built to hold 17,000 people.
