Cross the Atlantic to Canada
Embark on a Transatlantic voyage to the New World and discover the Canadian provinces of Nova Scotia, Quebec and Newfoundland in early fall, when Autumn colours are beginning to appear. You return across the Atlantic via the Azores on this all-inclusive cruise to Canada in 2027. The port of departure for recovery missions after the sinking of the Titanic, Halifax has a rich maritime history which you can learn all about at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, before cruising to Gaspé. The Gaspé peninsula is renowned for its dramatic coastal scenery, easily recognisable from the large sea arch of Percé Rock. It is here that Jacques Cartier claimed Canada for France in 1534 during his voyage to the New World.
Enjoy an extended visit to Quebec City, with its 17th-century fortifications and UNESCO-listed Old Town. Key sights include the grand Fairmont Chateau Frontenac, which is set on a promontory in the Upper Town, Terrasse Dufferin boardwalk, and the historic Plains of Abraham, a vast park where the Battle of Quebec was fought in 1759. Next, cruise to a new port of call for Spirit of Discovery, Saguenay, which has a scenic setting on the edge of the majestic Saguenay Fjord. Returning to Nova Scotia, uncover history linked to the American Revolution in Sydney and call at Charlottetown on the island of Prince Edward, the setting for Lucy Maud Montgomery’s classic novel, ‘Anne of Green Gables’. On the island of Newfoundland, explore Corner Brook on the west coast and St John’s on the east. The return journey includes a visit to Sao Miguel in the Azores, renowned for its scenic crater lakes and hot springs.

Off the coast of Halifax, on the fortified Island of McNab, the Royal Navy hanged the bodies of mutineers during the Napoleonic War. Halifax itself was the port of departure for recovery missions after the sinking of the Titanic and is the final resting place for many of the disaster’s victims. The city’s rich maritime history is retold at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic.

A new port of call for Spirit of Discovery, Saguenay enjoys a scenic setting within a glacial valley on the edge of the majestic Saguenay Fjord. The Musee de la Petite Maison Blanche documents the history of the region – including the devastating floods of 1996. While the Renaissance revival-style Cathedrale St Francois-Xavier overlooks the old port area of Saguenay.

Sydney is the one-time steel producing hub of Cape Breton and was the staging post for Atlantic convoys during World War Two. The city’s main focal point is its waterfront, which is home to the world’s largest fiddle, standing 60-feet tall in recognition of Cape Breton’s blue grass and country musicianship.

Charlottetown is the capital and largest city of the province of Prince Edward Island. It is situated on a harbour formed by the confluence of three rivers. Its downtown are features Victorian-era houses and buildings, while the waterfront has been redeveloped with walking trails and parks. Striking Province House is where the Prince Edward Island Legislature has met since 1847, making it Canada’s second-oldest seat of government. Prince Edward Island is also the setting for Lucy Maud Montgomery’s classic novel, ‘Anne of Green Gables’.

Corner Brook is set on the west coast of Newfoundland, and offers a gateway to the Gros Morne National Park. Named a world heritage site for its exceptional scenery and geographic importance. The park forms part of an outlying range of the Appalachian Mountains and is a fine example of the process and product of plate tectonics.

St Johns in Newfoundland is the most easterly point of the Americas. Settled by the British in the 1600s it has a rich and varied history. Nearby, Cape Spear is the most easterly promontory of North America, and Signal Hill marks the spot where Marconi received the first, single-letter radio transmission in 1901.

Scattered in the North Atlantic Ocean, the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores is made up of nine islands, and Ponta Delgada is the capital of the largest of these, Sao Miguel. Aptly known as ‘Green Island’, Sao Miguel is characterised by its volcanic landscapes – to the east lies geothermal Furnas Lake with its bubbling fumeroles and hot springs, while in the northwest the green and blue crater lakes of Sete Cidades are situated.
