Spirit of Discovery blog
Arctic Norway
Spirit of Discovery just returned today from an eventful and fantastic 14 day journey to Norway. Unfortunately, heavy weather was the order of the day as we tried to move towards Honningsvåg with very powerful storm systems battering the coast. A major challenge for our teams to chart a new course through this beautiful area.
We were on a quest to find the northern lights and with clearer skies in the south of Norway we found some incredible displays of this phenomenon. The northern lights, or the aurora borealis, with their spectacular dancing waves have captivated people for millennia. What we are seeing is essentially energized particles from the sun that slam into the earth’s upper atmosphere. There are southern lights as well of course, but those would require a very different quest.
With some unscheduled stops in Trondheim, Kristiansund, Åndalsnes, Flam and Stavanger everyone got to experience the splendour of the aurora borealis and the Norwegian Fjords in winter. Magnificent.
Now we are off to the Caribbean.
Kind Regards
