Saga Sapphire blog - Captains' blogs

7th April, 2019

This has been a fantastic cruise for ports, superb food, great entertainment and excellent weather. Captain “sunshine” is back and it’s been a pleasure to look after our guests for my farewell cruise on saga Sapphire before I head to the shipyard for our magnificent new build Spirit of Discovery.

It was quite a breezy approach to the pilot station with 30 knots of wind from the WSW. Staff Captain Simon had the con and we had to create a “lee” to safely board the pilot at the entrance to the buoyed channel. With the pilot on board we had 3 miles to the berth. After an “interesting” approach from the pilot I asked Simon to take the con back early and “steady the ship”. Once inside the breakwater he conducted a sweeping 90 turn before “backing up” to the berth. We were all fast alongside by 0745 and the ship was clear soon afterwards.

I love Cadiz as the old City is so welcoming, full of narrow cobbled streets and colourful buildings, and from where we dock you can amble straight into town. Cadiz is the oldest continuously inhabited city in Spain and one of the oldest in western Europe.

I decided to head on my bike and try to get as far south as I could. Unfortunately 10km out I ran out of cycle path and did not fancy cycling on the autopista (motorway). After heading back into the town centre I met up with Omar Allibhoy (and fiancée Sandra) – a VIP chef we have on board who owns the Tapas Revolution chain in the UK. He suggested we go for Tapas and what a fantastic experience – in fact we did a mini “Tapas Crawl” where you move from bar to bar sampling different tapas. At 1530 I thought I better head back on my bike to make sure I wasn’t going to be late.

At 1645 we sailed and Hugo our Chief Officer carried out the maneuver and took us out to sea. A fine job it was and once clear of the port I stood down and reflected on another special day aboard Saga Sapphire. You might have noticed that many of the Deck Officers have been “driving” this cruise – it is always a bonus for the team when the Captain is in such a good mood!!
