25th April, 2018

What a busy few days. After our lovely day in Lisbon on Monday that evening we had a technical problem with the starboard main engine. After several conference calls with Head Office it was decided that we should turn-around and go back to Lisbon for repairs.

I advised our guests at 0800 in the morning of the need for us to return to Lisbon. Because I have such a great team I was already able to advise our guests of the overall plan and that Nat, Shore Ex Manager, had arranged a complimentary excursion for everyone for that afternoon, as well as one for the following morning.

It was a slow run back at 9 knots. Given the circumstances I thought it wise to have one tug on standby as we went through the ’Bar’, then escort us up to our berth. You remember what a Bar is?

We berthed at 1230, but by that time the BBQ deck party was in full swing. Great job George and Michelle. So with the party in full swing it was time for the technical team to crack-on with the engine repairs.

This morning, with great progress overnight, the engine trial was scheduled for 1100. I gave our passengers an update at 0800 before they popped ashore for their organised morning tour. It was all positive news.

At 1215 we were good to go. The Pilot embarked at 1245 and off we went - back along the River Tejo and out towards the Bar, not for the first time this week! It was a glorious sail-out under blue skies. Many guests were out on deck enjoying the sunshine and the complimentary cocktails.

It was good to be going again. My thanks to Len and the engineering team, all those who deliver front line services, and the back of house who worked through the ever-changing horizon to provide the recognised Saga service throughout. And finally, thanks to my Saga passengers who are patient, understanding and truly marvellous.
