Marseilles

Saga Sapphire blog - Captains' blogs

27th May, 2017

Today it's time for a call in le Francais. I'm up early at 0530 and whilst fast walking round the top deck I witness one of those magical sunrises at sea, as a full red sun climbs up above the nearby coastline.

As we approach Marseilles, the "ultra keen" pilot heads out to a position 5 miles from the port - I do wish they would just board where they are supposed to!! Anyway we give the pilot the con as he guides us into the inner harbour. I then take over and execute another pirouette before we "back down' towards the berth. An on time arrival and it's a beautiful day yet again.

The cosmopolitan city of Marseilles is France's oldest and 2nd largest city. For many years it was, and still is, France's gateway to the Mediterranean.

Shortly after 8 o'clock we had clearance and 30 minutes later our Guests were heading off on the first shore excursion.

I took to the road again for approx. 45 mins and cycled into the city centre. I had hoped to cycle to the top of the Notre Dame as the pilot had mentioned earlier what an amazing view it was, however time was not on my side. I did manage to get a great view of it though.

With everyone on board we slipped our moorings, and our Staff Captain once again took us out to sea for our overnight passage to Livorno
