Kiel Canal Charity Race

Saga Sapphire blog - Captains' blogs

21st September, 2016

What a fantastic day we had on the 21st September sailing down the picturesque Kiel Canal. Arriving at the first lock at 7am our brave cyclists disembarked the ship, to embark on their journey to beat us as we sailed through the canal. Leader of the pack, Lee Blakemore, planned out the route prior to the challenge and recruited five others to join him on his mission to raise money for a very worthy cause, Macmillan Cancer Support. As they pedalled alongside us, we had an absolutely fabulous lunch on our Veranda Deck thanks to our Executive Chef Dirk Roessler and his team, with traditional German dishes and beers it was a truly unforgettable Oktoberfest (in September). Adding a touch of sparkle as always our Explosive Team dressed up in traditional German outfits with the added bonus of our flamboyant Cruise Director John Parton appearing to much laughter, introducing himself as Frau Heidi Bratwurst with partner Fitz Neizentight (Ben Carpenter from the Explosive Cast).

Chef Dirk, being the ever keen cyclist between preparing and serving the feast joined in with the challenge on his exercise bike out on the Veranda for all to see, thus cycling the 99km distance without even leaving the ship.

Lee Blakemore commented ‘the scariest moment was looking off the side of the bridge after getting lost for an hour and seeing the ship sail underneath. Even worse was looking over my shoulder to realise that my team had stopped to take photos! We should have been ahead of it!’

Zsuzi Varga who normally does not cycle wanted to take on the challenge to help to raise money for the worthy cause. She said ‘The bike ride is the biggest challenge I’ve ever done, as I love watching sports on T.V. but not doing it! I enjoyed it despite having some difficult moments. I am proud of myself as I did something for a very good cause.’

We are extremely proud of all the team, not only did it create great entertainment for us all, waving to them as they passed us, but most importantly we have so far raised nearly £4000 with donations still coming in.
