Salerno

Saga Sapphire blog - Captains' blogs

4th October, 2016

So lots of people rave about this place…some people go there every day…some even go there in the morning, come back for lunch and go again in the afternoon!  I however, very rarely get to venture there myself.  I am of course talking about this wonderfully enigmatic place - “ashore”.

I’ve always argued that a hardworking, dutiful Staff Captain doesn’t get to go ashore –I got away with going twice in two days –not sure what that means for the future of that argument?

Anyway - today –“ashore”was a place called Salerno.

I like to think I’m quite conversant with Italy after having lived there for a couple of years.  Having not made it to Salerno before I was looking forward to seeing the town and striking contrasts and similarities between it and other places I’ve visited.

From afar, Salerno is both imposing and picturesque –built up on the side of steep hills with the motorway weaving its way overhead.

The town itself is unequivocally Italian.  Animated folk go about their daily business with a typical degree of flair, Scooters weave in and out of the narrow, cobbled streets and both hustle and bustle are present in equal measures.

Spoilt for choice - our passengers were able to choose shore excursions to Capri, Sorrento, Pompeii, and Naples (the list goes on….)!  Or, like me - just happily wander around, find a good restaurant and spend a few hours enjoying the simple things in life.
