St. George’s, Grenada

Saga Sapphire blog - Captains' blogs

8th February, 2016

The most southerly of the Windward Islands, Grenada is known as the ‘Spice Ilse’ as the aromas of cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla are carried on the breeze. This mountainous volcanic island has an ideal year-round climate, stunning beaches and many attractive towns.

I had already pre-warned our passengers that another cruise vessel was due at the pilot station at the same time, and with only one pilot on duty there may be a little re-jigging of our schedule. Grenada port control did not fail to disappoint! The pilot requested that the other vessel proceed alongside the finger pier first, which to some degree actually made sense. There was a strong breeze blowing across the dock which would have been pushing us away from the quay, with no tug available I therefore agreed the other vessel berth first so as to provide us a little ‘lee’ from the elements. I’m happy to report the plan worked perfectly.

The tour options today included ‘A Glimpse of St George’s’, ‘Free Time at the Beach’, ‘Island Highlights’, Sunnyside Gardens’ and a ‘West Coast Drive’. For the independent traveller the charming town was only a short stroll away offering a plethora of shops, restaurants and glorious white sandy beaches.

We departed in the early evening and following a sumptuous dinner provided by Chef Thierry and his team many passengers made their way to the Britannia Lounge for tonight’s Showtime featuring our own Explosive singers and dancers with their production of ‘The Concert They Never Gave’ featuring the hits of Sandie Shaw, Neil Sedaka, The Everly Brothers, Connie Francis, Dusty Springfield and Buddy Holly.
