Saga Sapphire blog - Captains' blogs

9th July, 2015

MV Saga Sapphire docked in Civitavecchia, the port for Rome, at 8.00am this morning.

There were five organised tours to choose from including ‘Panoramic Tour of Rome’, which allowed our guests to explore Rome’s fascinating past on this panoramic coach tour encompassing some of the city’s most impressive sights. ‘Rome and the Vatican’ commenced with a walk to the Vatican Museum, home to ancient Greek, Roman and Egyptian relics, then our guests were able to view the awe–inspiring Sistine Chapel. ‘On Foot Through Ancient Rome’, was a rather long tour but certainly well worth it, capturing as it did the unique atmosphere of Rome as our guests walked through some of the city’s loveliest streets, including the famous Spanish steps and the glorious Trevi Fountain. Our passengers could also take the option of a transfer to Rome to do their sightseeing independently. On the final tour, ‘Tivoli and Villa D’ Este’, our guests were driven through the rolling countryside on the outskirts of Rome; when they reached Tivoli had the opportunity to be enveloped in the evocative and relaxing atmosphere of Villa d’ Este, masterpiece of the Italian garden, included in the UNESCO world heritage list, with its impressive fountains, nymphs, grottoes, plays of water, natures colours and scents. They then proceeded to a local restaurant to enjoy a typical Italian lunch.

We had a very special treat for our guests this evening, as we always like to have some local entertainment on board to give passengers a flavour of the local traditions. This evening two gentlemen performers called ‘The Corrado Duo’ were welcomed on board and gave a marvellous show “An Evening at the Opera with Cristano Amici, accompanied by Fabio Montani.” After this there was a variety of entertainment for passengers to choose from, Martin Orbidans at the piano till late in the Coopers Bar, or dance the night away upstairs in the drawing room with the Two Hearts Duo.
