Tromsø, Norway

Tromsø is an important city, north of the Arctic Circle, with 111 ice-capped mountain ridges, where the Midnight Sun shines from 21st May to 21st July. Tromso experiences a subarctic climate because winter temperatures are just cold enough to qualify and the summer season is short. The city’s picturesque centre itself sits on a small, hilly island connected to the mountainous mainland by a long-legged, slender bridge. Tromsø is in the middle of the Aurora Borealis zone, and is in fact one of the best places in the world to observe this phenomenon.

With the many tours available here in Tromsø, most were lucky enough to be able to do two shore excursions within the time spent here today. Dogsledding and reindeer sledding was of course the most popular trip, and with the fantastic weather we’ve been experiencing it has to be said it was the perfect day for it. Tromso, lying 200 miles inside the Arctic Circle, is commonly known as the gateway to the arctic. This is because it was used as a starting point for hunters looking for artic foxes, polar bears and seals. Tromsø is the eighth- largest municipality in Norway with a population of 69,116, and the centre of the ninth largest urban area, with a population of 58,486. The city houses the most northerly botanical garden and planetarium. The planetarium being a tour in which was offered today.

You-Chiung Lin entertained us this evening with her first show titled ‘A night at the Movies’. A stunning musical talent from Taiwan but residing in the United Kingdom. With a fantastic performance You left everyone looking forward to her next performance. Shortly after main show time our resident female vocalists Hannah Kennedy and Emma Swallow performed their Girls night in cabaret up in the Drawing Room. Sadly it’s the last time the girls will be performing their cabaret on Saga Sapphire as they will be finishing their contract come the end of this cruise. Movie night in the Academy was very apt for our itinerary this cruise being Snow Dogs. After a thoroughly enjoyable day in port, there is plenty more to look forward to tomorrow in our next port of call being Narvik.
