Mariehamn

Saga Pearl II blog - Captains' blogs

15th June, 2018

Well Saganauts – Captain Nick here and it is good to be back. I joined here in sunny Mariehamn today while Captain Tanner goes on leave. My journey yesterday took me from my home very early in the morning to London Gatwick where I got a flight to Stockholm and then a ferry from there to Mariehamn. I have done the archipelago transit out of Stockholm many times, but never before from a fine Seafood restaurant on the passenger deck of a ferry!!!

I didn’t know a lot about Mariehamn before I joined apart from it being at the entrance to the Gulf of Bothnia, but what a beautiful place. It is the capital of Aland which is part of Finland yet everyone speaks Swedish!!! Unfortunately both my Finnish and Swedish is very rusty!! In our downtown berth it was the hub of activity with fishing boats, yachts and ferries and all of our guests were out and about either on tour or exploring the local town by foot.

With everyone aboard we left shortly after, as we needed to leave ahead of an inbound ferry, and it was full ahead to the pilot station. We then dropped off our pilot and it was an easy ride to the Kiel Canal Lighthouse pilot station with a seaday in between. Perfect to get settled into being back onboard.

Kiel canal here we come and looking forward to our daytime transit!!! Speak soon……..
