Saga Pearl II blog - Captains' blogs

6th July, 2018

Today we arrived in to our Home Port of Dover. We had enjoyed an excellent few days at sea from Gibraltar with the Bay of Biscay being calm and sunny.

For this Scenic Summer Fjords cruise to Norway I have the pleasure of taking over the writing of the blog from Captain Sunderland. The senior team sailing this cruise is: Captain Nick, Hotel Director Dawn, Chief Engineer Mark, Cruise Director Kayleigh and myself, Staff Captain Simon.

Our weather today here in Dover has been brilliant with highs of 22ºc, light winds and partly cloudy skies. The only downside was a little light shower in the early afternoon. At 1pm we commenced our embarkation process and this cruise we have the pleasure to welcome our new guests on board. From our crew 12 of them disembarked to return home for some well-earned rest, and coming back fresh from leave we had 13 crew members join us today.

Turnaround Day operations for us are very busy, and today in Dover was no exception. During our time alongside in Dover we unloaded approximately 500 suitcases and loaded around 600 items of luggage. As well as the luggage we loaded 31 pallets of dry stores (little jars of jam and marmalade to flour for the freshly baked bread), 30 pallets of Fresh Fruit and Vegetables, 13 pallets of Meat and Fish. The crew work very hard on a turnaround day to get Saga Pearl II ready for the next cruise.

By 1530 we had everyone on board and it was time for us to carry out our important passenger safety drill prior to departure. With all the departure formalities completed, at 1600 Captain Sunderland gave the order to let go the lines and we cast off for our passage north to Flam. Tonight we will be sailing the Dover Straits before heading out in to the North Sea.

My photos for today are from the Dover Straits as we approached the port of Dover this morning. A wonderful sunrise along with a fully laden tanker and sailing boat.

After a full day for the ship’s crew and myself, it is time to wish you all a great evening and I will be back tomorrow with another blog entry.
