La Pallice

Saga Pearl II blog - Captains' blogs

30th July, 2018

Today saw us in the port of La Pallice, the gateway port to the coastal city of La Rochelle. La Rochelle is located on the western coast of France about half way between the Spanish Border and northern coast of France. The weather had a cloudy start with of course a light rain shower on arrival, thankfully this did not last long and later the sun was out and we had temperatures of 22c

We embarked our pilot at 1030 and then it was a short transit to our berth located in La Pallice. We were safely docked by 1130 and our guests were able to proceed ashore and sample the local delights. Our tours today headed off to the Charming Ré Island and wine tasting at a local wine cop-operative from the small producers on the island. Also, Cognac was the feature of another 2 of our tours, taking in the beautiful harbour area of La Rochelle and then cognac tasting in the Château de La Peraudière. The other tour took in the Hennessy Cognac distillery. Some of our guests also visited the La Roche Courbon, a fairy tale castle located in the French countryside.

For the walking part of our Wine, Walking and Tapas cruise, our Fitness Cruise Staff Danielle took around 20 people off on a walking tour of La Rochelle, which was well received by all.

For today’s interesting nautical nugget, I thought I would tell you about the word “Mayday” this is said to have originated from the French word “M’aidez” meaning “Help Me”!

With our pilot embarked and all pre-departure checks complete we let go the mooring lines at 1730 and proceed out of the short passage back to the pilot station. With the pilot away and sea speed set, it was time for us to get ready for our Welcome on Board cocktail party and formal dinner. Our passage this evening will see us sailing south along the French coast heading towards the just near the French and Spanish border and our next port of Bayonne, France.

I wish you a bonne nuit from Saga Pearl II
