Alta

Saga Pearl II blog - Captains' blogs

23rd February, 2018

We certainly had a wonderful day here in Alta – but cold – and I mean REALLY COLD at - 10 degrees C in the wind and -12 degrees C forecast for tomorrow. Our pilots were steering the ship in through the night from Tromso and we were alongside the cruise pier, just by the runway for Alta airport, at 8am. Many of our ‘Red Army’ were on tour today. Alta is our most northerly port, breaking 70 degrees North of latitude, so I really hope we see the Northern lights tonight and into tomorrow – fingers crossed!!!

Tours on offer today ranged from Dog Sledding and Sami Adventure, the famous Igloo Hotel visit, Reindeer Sledding, the Husky Overnight Experience and one of my favourites here, the Hunting for the Aurora Borealis tour in the evening – hopefully that will prove fruitful. Today I went on the Skidoo tour and have enclosed some great photos – I love Skidooing and would buy one if we had snow in Lincolnshire!!!!

Well here we are Day 2 of Alta – and YES – WE HAD THE NORTHERN LIGHT SHOW!! And what an amazing show it was. Visible from the ship and the tours ashore we have some great photos for you to enjoy. Fantastic.

1pm came about quickly and it was time for us to leave, as we have a fairly long pilotage down to Narvik and we have to be on time.

Enjoy the photos, and let’s see if we get the Northern Lights again tonight!!
