Spirit of the Rhine – our first boutique river cruise ship

Our first purpose-built river cruise ship, Spirit of the Rhine, was constructed at the Vahali Shipyards in Serbia in 2021 and set sail on her inaugural cruise later in the year. Drawing on over three decades of experience in the cruise industry Spirit of the Rhine was lovingly designed in collaboration with specialist interior design and architect company, Cubik 3.

Having our own purpose-built ships allows us to guarantee the things that are important to our guests.

The design concept

Before we started work on Saga’s first river ship, Spirit of the Rhine, we visited their ocean cruise ship, Spirit of Adventure. On board, we learnt that our basic approach to these design tasks is very much in line with Saga’s philosophy and the expectations of their guests. The greater appreciation for art and culture that British travellers have is very much in line with our design philosophy.

Incorporating art, history and legend

Roses form part of the decor in the Panorama Restaurant
Spirit of the Rhine’s interior design focuses on the English rose, with floral designs incorporated on the walls of the Panorama Restaurant and on the carpet of the speciality Rheinfels Restaurant. While a nod has also been given to the river’s legends, such as Lorelei and Rheinfels Castle – a special commission of the castle painted by Sunga Park is exhibited in Rheinfels Restaurant.

Bright floral designs are featured in the carpet of the Rheinfels Restaurant
And in the Lorelei Lounge you can see a 3D depiction of butterflies landing on ‘the Lorelei book’ by Lisa Haftel, while the ship’s corridors showcase delicate butterfly wing patterns by Lauri Dunn.
We have some unique art installations throughout the ship which bring the theme of the ship to life. The layout and furnishings are practical, yet comfortable, so guests can rest and be ready for a new day exploring their destination.

Contemporary, yet functional

On board we have created an inviting, comfortable space for our guests, taking inspiration from the sights and experiences of the ship’s namesake river.
Colours and patterns from nature have been incorporated into our designs, sometimes more and sometimes less subtly, sometimes in an extremely abstract way.
